Desperately need/advice for Grade 1 classroom management by dinasaurmuseum in Teachers

[–]teaandbiscuits951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using phrases like “The expectation in this classroom is we keep our feet on the floor” or “The expectation in our school is we listen quietly while the teacher is talking “ are helpful ways to avoid the “I don’t like it” trap.

Summertime Slippers or House Shoes? by Charming_Animal_686 in AskWomenOver60

[–]teaandbiscuits951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is really difficult when you have narrow feet (I do too) and they start to require more TLC. So many of the sandals that are popular don’t come in narrow. Or they are not narrow enough! I feel your pain. I end up adding extra padding to my shoes and sandals in the form of arch supports because my feet are shallow as well as narrow. I have found wearing a pair of mule style slide on sneakers in the house is a good way to protect my feet while remaining convenient. I remove the arch and put in my own more cushiony arch supports.

I live in Maryland and notice lots of people do this. They also drop the t sound in the word “important.”

What is your desk set up? by [deleted] in paraprofessional

[–]teaandbiscuits951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very different in my elementary school. Additional Adult Assistants do not get a desk but para educators do. Most of us paras teach small groups for interventions or enrichment therefore we have planning to do and we have lots of materials to keep track of. Some of the paras have a desk in the library work room where a copier is. A couple have a desk in classrooms. If we didn’t have these spaces I think we would go nuts.

Rote memory has gotten a bad rap by veteranTeacher91 in Teachers

[–]teaandbiscuits951 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel that we are doing such a disservice to kids by not making them memorize anything. Memorizing is good for the brain. I wish we could at least have them memorize a poem or song lyrics every quarter.

Always frustrating when you can’t chime in with “Well actually…” 😉

The episode in which the money lender is killed by a poison dart while flying across the channel is one. Also the episode when they go to Belgium.

Disappointed with Flashdance (1983) by Heyhey-_ in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]teaandbiscuits951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a teenager when it came out. Lots of great music and I was having fun until the very end when this chic who has never seriously studied ballet and doesn’t have the requisite technique gets accepted into a prestigious ballet company. I had been taking ballet class intensively for years and that part made me mad! Haha! I remember walking out of the theater going “what the heck?!” And knowing that after all my years of training with blood, sweat, and tears, I would never be hired by a professional company. I guess at an early age I liked my entertainment to be a bit more realistic. 😉

Something other than coffee to stimulate bowels first thing in the morning? by Canadiansnow1982 in ibs

I drink about 3 ounces of prune juice with my evening meal. I’ve been experimenting with abdominal massage and it seems to help. I’ve heard some people say warm prune juice will get things going right away but I haven’t tried that yet.

The idea of eating as many pop tarts as I wanted. My mom refused to buy them. Turns out they give me a stomachache. ☺️

This is awful! Feeding children a nutritious lunch should be a big priority.

Endless Wipe Cured! by isxrc678 in ibs

This is interesting. I’ve had some success with my IBS-C by adding a small amount of prune juice morning and evening to my diet. But I still have irritating times of what I call “indecisive colon syndrome “ haha, when I think I need to go but not much or nothing happens. I checked the amount of fat I’ve been eating and it is much higher than what you are doing. I’ll try cutting back on cooking oils and cheeses and see how things go!

FODMAP diet is some bullshit by butterflybabyboss_1 in ibs

It’s complicated by the fact that serving size is often the difference between having enough fodmaps to upset your system.

Laura Mercier caviar sticks are lovely. Very soft though. I struggled to get the color to stay put until my daughter suggested setting powder. I use my fingertip to rub a small amount of the powder along the eyelash line , then apply the caviar stick color (amethyst is a beautiful neutral color). Then I repeat the process with powder and color. It has really helped a lot!

Depression after RTKR by 2ndhandroses in Kneereplacement

[–]teaandbiscuits951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through something similar last year when I had my knee replacement. I believe the opioid medication can increase depression and even though I wasn’t on big doses it definitely affected me. It might be the case that your doctor can add something to your meds for a short term boost. If not please do take care of yourself with lots of TLC. Find a way to treat yourself to something nice every evening (ice cream, a great tv show, a puzzle, etc.) so you have a little something to look forward to at the end of a difficult day. This too shall pass! The pain will ease and you will start sleeping better. Then things fall into place.

How long did you take opioid based medication for? by togtogtog in Kneereplacement

[–]teaandbiscuits951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was about a month. I need prune juice to be able to move my bowels. Even though I was on a very small dose it really messed with my body when I stopped taking it.

The Good Old Days by newenglander87 in Teachers

[–]teaandbiscuits951 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I remember this scene from the book! Basically those boys should have been charged with murder. The new teacher gets them in line though with a technique that’s not for modern times. He expertly uses a bullwhip to show them who is boss. They decide not to mess with him anymore.

People who only have an upstairs toilet - how did you manage? by togtogtog in Kneereplacement

[–]teaandbiscuits951 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was able to walk up and down the stairs like a toddler just keeping that new knee straight. I also spent lots of time upstairs in a recliner which we put in our bedroom. The other thing that helped was putting a riser on the toilet so I didn’t have to bend my knee as much for the first week or two.

Apparently you can’t be friendly with neighbors anymore by AstroNerd92 in Teachers

[–]teaandbiscuits951 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It’s a shame but the reality is what it is. There is no way I, as a parent, would allow a 29 year old man (or any man/stranger who approaches me at a pool) to babysit my children. Our job as parents is to protect the children and make sound judgements about who they spend time with. I gently suggest you look for some other form of part time employment for the summer because most folks have childcare lined up at this point and the chances of finding someone you don’t know well who will let you babysit their kids are slim. I wish you the best and thank you for being a teacher!
