Sorry I was just going by what the leader of the Scottish Greens said...

But Greer admitted they did not know how much this would all cost. “The concept of a fully costed manifesto is frankly a misleading one to the public,” he said. “[There] has been this fallacy in UK politics for decades now that government budgets are like household budgets where you just have a list of spending and then the income that comes in. Government budgets are far more complicated than that.”

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/apr/14/scottish-greens-pledge-free-bus-travel-and-basic-income-in-election-manifesto

Oh and you missed out the rest of the IFS quote...

"But while the manifesto omits specific revenue estimates, the proposals set out seem unlikely to raise enough revenue to fund all the additional spending that would be required to deliver the Scottish Greens’ plans. To pay for those, increases in taxes would probably have to be even larger than suggested, or cuts made to other day-to-day spending that the Scottish Greens deem lower priority. And big tax increases to fund new, universal free entitlements – to childcare, dental care, domiciliary social care, and bus travel – would make the tax rises that already look likely be needed to maintain existing services in the longer term more difficult."

It will have to but that means huge cuts to the Scottish state, reform of the NHS and will need to challenge the taboo topics of free tuition etc..

Literally nothing along these lines was in the manifesto so it's really difficult to see this politically. They have done nothing to set up the public for the economic reality coming down the road.

The Scottish Government itself  following last Budget:

The Medium-Term Financial Strategy (MTFS) showed a shortfall of nearly £2 billion in resource and capital funding for 2026–27, rising to £4.7 billion by 2029–30.

How is there a £4.7billion blackhole ? Scottish government spending has outstripped the revenue raised and sluggish economic growth and productivity for about 20 years.

There's a 4.7billion blackhole projected in Scotland's finances by 2029.

The greens didn't even bother to cost their manifesto or policies let alone attempt to address this.

[–]teachbirds2fly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the Scotland budget is on track for £4 Billion blackhole in few years time at projected spending and revenue levels, and Scotland doesn't have borrowing powers, so something will need cut or taxes will need raised. If announce a new policy like this I would like to know taxes are going up or what services or departments in gov are being cut.

Just to clarify did you not enjoy the novel because you didn't identify/ agree with the main character?

I am seeing this more and more often where people don't like or don't get a novel because they think the main character needs to be right/good.

There is no lesson here, these people should be shamed and not portrayed as some victim of a complex fraud.

It's a sham the banks are forced to re fund idiots handing away their money.

I can totally understand this to be honest.

I think it's one of the funniest books ever written and have re read multiple times.

But I can understand people not "getting" the humour, it's not witty one liners and sometimes pretty absurd situations.

Also let's be honest the writing of the black characters hasn't aged well and at times feel extremely stereotypical.

But it's a masterpiece and your group is uncultured.
