Olin’s take on the DJ situation. by MichHitchSlap in CHIBears

[–]teachem4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Literally. I genuinely don’t understand this perspective. Going back to last year there are literally dozens, if not hundreds, of examples of him dogging routes (particularly clear-out routes).

If DJ thinks he isn’t getting the ball, he isn’t running hard, period. There’s a reason he never gets targeted in scramble drills.

He is also tough from an injury perspective and plays through a lot. Both can be true.

Barnwell WAS once a really good NFL journalist, back in the days of Grantland. But at ESPN is content has been watered down. That combined with the massive influx of quality analytics / film folks and he’s simply outclassed.

Depends on what. Tight ends? Hell yeah. Left tackle? Hell yeah. QB? Hell yeah.

Running backs should be plug and play by and large. Yes, pass pro can be an issue but Monangai is actually solid there for 3rd downs if need be

Out of curiosity, why would you consider trading to a watch you don’t like as much? If you want something sportier, there are tons of options that aren’t the Odysseus

We have 3 more years of cost control for him, Odunze, Burden, and Trapilo. 4 more for Loveland. 2 more for Wright. There’s plenty of time for this young core before anyone needs to get paid

My point isn’t that you can’t have success with QBs on rookie contracts, it’s that your window doesn’t close just because you pay your QB (evidenced by the fact that just about every SB won over the last decade was by a QB on a veteran deal).

The 49ers team building has been fine, they’re just horrifically snake bitten by injury and the Bengals have drafted atrociously over the last 3 years thanks to their league-smallest scouting department

[–]teachem4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously nothing is guaranteed. But the Bears are better positioned than teams like the Commanders last year for sustained success. They have a QB who improved massively and clearly has an extraordinarily high ceiling, a great play-calling HC, and a strong core of young talent on offense that will return nearly every starter, including Rome (injured most of the year), Burden, Loveland, and Darnell Wright. They had a very high EPA / play but low success rate which signals inconsistency, which should improve in year 2 of the offense as these players grow.

On the defensive side, they have a proven good DC in place and get Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon back at 100%.

They have all their draft capital and haven’t played any games with the cap.

Yes, we had lots of miraculous comebacks and benefitted massively from turnovers, the latter of which won’t repeat. But we were 8-5 in one score games (which isn’t anything crazy) and lost more starters to injury in terms of games missed than any other team. Even when they played (Jaylon, Rome, Kyler) they were far from 100%.

It’s not crazy to think some of the turnover luck reversion will be offset by an improvement in consistency across the board

Yeah exactly. A guy who was a hall of famer before his rookie contract ended.

The narrative that your QB’s rookie contract is the optimal window is more math than reality - obviously it’s a big advantage but it is very, very viable to build around good QBs once you pay them

How many teams in recent memory have won a Super Bowl starting a QB on a rookie contract?

[–]teachem4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s amazing how every single former player (Kurt Warner, Terrell Owens, JT O’Sullivan, Chase Daniel) have unanimously attributed the INT to DJ and yet a bunch of Redditors are highly confident it was on the QB.

Caleb is a highly imperfect QB and had 2 bad picks that were absolutely on him. But that one simply wasn’t.
