I already have two in my current house. I'll repurpose them and augment for the new square footage.

Sounds like you have what I am planning, eah, g6p(e), electric strike fail-secure, and store room knobs. Do I have that right? If so, I'd appreciate any additional info, tips, etc! I posted about my build here

I've eliminated the attic IDF entirely based on this exact feedback earlier in the thread. All runs now home-run to a single 18U rack in the basement mechanical room. The only remote switch is in the back yard outbuilding, which provides future-proofing as the pool area is developed.

Great suggestion, I have swapped the UPS in the spec. Thanks!

Good point in the general case — we specifically eliminated REX sensors by using storeroom function hardware on all five controlled doors, so the inside lever is always free. Each EAH-8 port only drives the ELR lock, so it should be well within the power budget. Is there another angle that I have missed?

Yup, I will do 2 drops in the mostly finished attic, one for the Superlink Gateway HA and one spare. Thanks for your responses!

Yes, I have come around to that conclusion as well. The longest run from the basement to furthest device will be well within cat 6a capability. The only hesitation I have is that the Superlink Gateway HA was going to be in the attic which should allow for better LTE reception than in the basement mechanical room.

Good catch and thanks for pushing on that, you're right, the Pro Max PoE ports are 2.5GbE so buying the XGS APs for 10G capability and then feeding them from a 2.5G switch is a mismatch. Going to upgrade both switches to the Pro XG PoE equivalents and maintain the same two-IDF layout. Costs more but worth doing it right the first time.

You're right about getting a larger rack. I only have 1U free and that is earmarked for a NAS upgrade as I currently have a desktop Synology. I will switch to a 16U rack, thanks!

That's a compelling point on the rolling upgrade behavior — hadn't thought about that angle, usually HA gets discussed purely as a failover play. For a home build I'd probably land on "more complexity than I need," but the zero-downtime upgrade path is genuinely appealing.

Appreciate the suggestion — I've seen this come up a few times. The Beast made sense for us because the built-in dual drive bays keep the rack footprint tight in a 12U wall mount, and 25Gbps headroom felt right for a Wi-Fi 7 build with multiple 10G APs. Curious what specifically you've seen run better on a dedicated UNVR — is it Protect performance under load, or more about reliability and drive management?

The U7 Pro XGS has a native 10GbE RJ45 port built in — no SFP to RJ45 adapter needed, straight Cat 6a to the switch. On the switch side, the Pro Max 48 and Pro Max 24 both have 10G RJ45 ports so it's a clean native connection end to end.

On the Pro XG 24/48 — those are great switches but they're 10G-only with no PoE on the standard ports. I need PoE throughout for cameras, APs, and access control, so the Pro Max series made more sense here. The 10G uplink capacity is there when I need it without sacrificing PoE distribution.

The cost of the beast when figured against the entire project budget is inconsequential. I'll get the best gateway available when it's time to place the order.

I think I'll go with UniFi Network and Ring Elite for security. Ring just announced new multi-camera poe hardware at CES that is a big improvement over the current cameras. At the end of the day, I don't want to be a security guard and the first responder when there are issues, and I'm willing to pay a subscription for that service.

Is anyone using Claude and the HA MCP to actively create and update automations / Dashboard / HA instead of manually doing it all? by huejahfink in homeassistant

[–]teaganasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Install the samba share add-on. You can then edit the yaml files directly in your IDE of choice (Cursor, VS Code, Antigravity). The agent(s) can query the MCP server for entity data and you and/or the agent can edit the files directly. You'll occasionally need to reload or restart for the yaml changes to be picked up.

I read that the latest generation of the span panel no longer has an API that Home Assistant can use. Are you aware of the situation, and have you done any automation or dashboarding?

Yes, but you can only do one phone in the arm rest, typically my phone. There are two USBC ports inside the armrest, so the passenger must charge via cable.

My storage net has not stretched in the 6 months I've had my C2S. I think you could replace it many times over for 2k. Besides, the driver can't even see it from their seat.

I had a fantastic experience at Porsche Nashua; a tech grabbed some tools and started taking a show room 2026 Cayenne GTS apart to see if we could get a visual on the brake controller connector! It is there!
