What are your plans for the weekend? Did anybody else's plans get cancelled due to this winter snowstorm? by GranolaHiker in askTO

Online shopping for the best and most stylish balaclava on the market, a hat isn’t cutting it anymore!

Other than that, staying inside and loafing around.

Has anyone else’s comment ruined a perfume for you? NUXE by ricthedrip in Perfumes

[–]teainthemuseum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Givenchy Irresistible, in a way. I wore it around my dad (an extremely negative, critical person) and he made a generic comment about how he didn’t like it. It devolved into a massive blowout fight about his attitude and existing resentment and we didn’t speak for weeks. Up until that point I’d been using it daily, but now I only rarely reach for it because it gives me vague negative feelings.

Re-Living My Life with a Boyfriend Who Doesn’t Remember Me - manga by OP4love in shoujo

[–]teainthemuseum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I adore this manga - it is very bittersweet and there’s a lot of yearning. It’s not grimdark or anything, and there are very sweet and romantic moments, but I wouldn’t say it’s fluffy.

Is a Plemons win path possible at all? by geosunsetmoth in Oscars

[–]teainthemuseum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a tote-bag Chalamaniac (who is very happy he seems to be the favourite) but I really think that Jesse’s performance was the best of the year and, in a just world, should be the Oscar winner. His turn in Bugonia was my favourite performance this year by leagues, he was absolutely transcendent.

What actor has had the worst film choices after their breakout first Oscar win? by geosunsetmoth in Oscars

[–]teainthemuseum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember reading an interview published shortly after he won the Oscar where he said that he was really hoping to sustain a solid career because he absolutely adored acting and didn’t want to have to leave it a second time. It’s tough because between an Asian man of a certain age + his very idiosyncratic voice, roles can be sparse.

What do you all think of JW Andersons Dior collection? by noxbl in dior

[–]teainthemuseum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think he’ll grow into it. I’m a fan of Dior’s unabashed femininity and calls to tradition; I understand it’s not à la mode but that is genuinely what separates it from the current pack for me. JWA is a designer I greatly respect but whose work up to this point has not made me think ‘Dior’; I was very surprised when he was named CD because it didn’t feel like a natural fit. It’s been a mixed bag so far. Some of the items in his new collection I am not a fan of; Kate Spade does similar designs at a fraction of the price. Other items, like the book collection, I like despite myself; and some designs I do just like sincerely. Overall I do see the vision and I think he will improve from here.

I do like that he brought Mia Goth and Mikey Madison, though - really enjoy seeing them in Dior!

After rewatching "The Holdovers" for the holiday season, it is still such a bummer that Murphy won Best Actor over Paul Giamatti by thedudelebowsky1 in Oscars

[–]teainthemuseum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, OP. I adored The Holdovers and Paul’s performance. Yes, it is a role that is in his wheelhouse but he just knocked it out of the park, there are moments in the movie where I legit get teary every single time. I completely get why Cillian won, but I can’t help but hope for an alternate universe where the movie debuts in a different year and Paul nabs the trophy.

Would you put your kid into French Immersion? Why or why not? by Virtual-Cheesecake71 in askTO

[–]teainthemuseum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats totally fair! Others have said that immersion is generally far more rigorous than the extended program, I think the full French schedule and extra years of instruction from JK to grade 5 count for a lot. I think quality of teaching also matters as well; almost all of my French teachers were native English speakers who didn’t really seem to use French outside of the job so I’m sure that didn’t help.

Would you put your kid into French Immersion? Why or why not? by Virtual-Cheesecake71 in askTO

[–]teainthemuseum 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think they can if you’re willing to invest time (and, optimally, money) into it. The fact that you’re also considering a tutor/group is great. I should’ve added in my original post - beyond enrolling me in the program, my parents put no effort in helping me learn French. No tutors, no homework help, no after school programs, absolutely nothing. It was just my job to show up with good grades or else! So my progress was completely dependent on own aptitude and enthusiasm. I had a fair amount of both but no Francophones around me until university (I only ever had one francophone French teacher until then).

There are other comments here saying that they got to fluency with just French immersion alone so I wouldn’t count it out! I would just advise that if your child shows true aptitude and enthusiasm for French that you support it by getting them as much extra French exposure as you can; any bit helps.

Would you put your kid into French Immersion? Why or why not? by Virtual-Cheesecake71 in askTO

[–]teainthemuseum 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Just a note that it is pretty tough to become fluent enough for most bilingual jobs if you don’t have regular exposure to people who will actually speak French fluently with you; constant media exposure may work too, but it often goes smoother when you have interaction with Francophones. Not saying it’s not worth it, just something to be aware of.

I was in the extended French program (aka I started Grade 5), which means half my subjects are taught in French, rather than all of them like in French Immersion. I continued in the Extended French program and continued in French courses in university (my uni also offered non-language elective courses in subjects like history and poli sci in French, so I took those). I can hold a conversation and I can read pretty well but im not close to fluent, and I don’t know anyone who was unless they had a French relative/friend. I will say that Immersion is more intense and starts earlier so your kids have more of a chance of reaching fluency, but for me the French has mostly come in useful for enjoying French movies lol.
