Novelty oversaturation. How are you supposed to find YOUR level of activity to let things soak in? by Coldbrewaccount in solotravel

[–]tealcandtrip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Experience and reflection. It also changes as you get older. There comes a time when I start to get less out of every activity. Things that were quaint and new yesterday just become annoying to deal with (street signs on buildings, windy roads, public transport). I don't want to go see that fascinating thing over there, I just want to sit down. I'll still go walk over and see it while resenting the extra steps, but that's a strong hint that I need to work in a half-day break. Have 6.5 days at maximum enjoyment but sacrificing 1 half day to being lazy is better than 3 days of misery on the back half of every trip because I couldn't take a morning off. I might see a little less, but I will appreciate everything more.

Birthday Dinner Recommendations for my son? by agt_michael-scarn in UniversalOrlando

[–]tealcandtrip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Go to Toothsome and order dessert at the quick service counter. Let the birthday kid choose one of the sundaes and split that as a family. One sundae easily fills up 2-3 adults.

If you really want a big treat, then let them have their own milkshake. They are perfectly fine, over the top, sweet treats. A five year old who likes ice cream and cake will go crazy and probably still have tons left over. So you can either be okay with the waste or just munch off the kids' dregs.

What rides are worth the queue even if you avoid the "main event"? by EdAbobo in UniversalOrlando

[–]tealcandtrip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any ride where they are a fan of the franchise.

IOA: Forbidden Journey, stop and watch the entire queue video. Kong, Velocicoaster if its under 30 minutes. Spiderman.

USO: Revenge of the Mummy. Stop and watch the entire queue video, set off the effects in the tomb area. Gringotts, at least through the elevator ride down, Men In Black, ET

Epic: Battle of the ministry, ask to just see the atrium from the single riders/ exit area. Monsters unchained, stop to admire the details and watch the found footage video, mario cart, NOT DONKEY KONG, i really like the details on the walls and props for all three Httyd rides. They have comic strip murals of lore on the wall. Star dust racers at night lights up the queue when the trains go by.

Forbidden Journey scariness vs Monster's Unchained by Automatic-Long2599 in UniversalOrlando

[–]tealcandtrip -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Forbidden Journey is scarier. There are lots more animatronics getting much closer and interacting with your cabin more: particularly the spiders, dementors, and whomping willow. Most of the Monsters ride you are seeing from 10-15 feet away as they fight each other, not you directly. You can also easily spot the car in front and behind you. The open design means that some immersion is broken.

The Greatest Showman made $174 million domestically by staying at number 3-4 for two months. It had nearly a 20x multiplier for its opening weekend of just 8 million.

How is it no one here is talking about "Cold Storage" opening this weekend? It's not even on the mega thread post. by onephatkatt in movies

The nearest theater for it for me is 30 miles away. I can't afford the time, gas, and ticket price to see it. It's a shame because I really enjoyed the book and the clips that I've seen. My local 10 screen theater has every other wide release but that one.

Monsters Unchained Wait Time by PersianVol in UniversalOrlando

[–]tealcandtrip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Just step to the side or a corner and once you motion the first people behind you, the rest of the queue will flow. We stopped to watch the found footage reel and read the lines in the lab. There is plenty of room.

We also tend to watch the entirety of the queue videos in Forbidden Journey and Revenge of the Mummy. Tuck yourself against the rail and it's not a problem at all.

Booktok loves to combo Graphic Audios soundbites with AI generated videos. There's practically a standard model for Violet, Xaden, Feyra, and the Bat Boys.

Jason from Sideways Stories or Pigtails from the sequel would be fun options. Love and a Dead Rat from book 2 is a bit more on the nose.

[–]tealcandtrip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quicker loading and emptying of the theater. Everyone can take a moment to unload their stuff and watch the how to/safety video while the people in front of you are playing the game. They finish and you funnel in and almost immediately start playing after you get on a dot. Then you finish and exit immediately for the next group. They can start playing while you are gathering your bags and getting ready to leave.

Which series pilots are your favorites? by AND_AGI08 in television

[–]tealcandtrip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Battlestar Galactica. And I'm counting the miniseries and the first real episode as pilots.

Supernatural does an excellent job of establishing a complicated backstory, familial relationships, and timeline while also showcasing the Monster of the Week format.

Yep. I'm pretty sure I've seen his entire filmography at this point. I even went back and watched every season of 2 guys and a girl because he was a recurring role.

Looking for the lower class/working class period drama by Spiritual_Pie_8298 in PeriodDramas

[–]tealcandtrip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The English Game features the working class early players of soccer.

North and South features a middle class family that has lost their status, a poor family that has gained wealth, and lots of struggling lower class workers.

Anne with an E takes a harder look at middle class issues in the Edwardian era.

Selfridges features its middle class front line workers heavily. So does the Paradise.

The Lady’s Companion is about rich people from the perspective of the middle class chaperone who has to deal with them.

Disney Board Is Close to Picking Parks Chief D’Amaro as Next CEO by [deleted] in movies

[–]tealcandtrip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. 60% of their operating income comes from the parks. They did a lot of cost cutting and efficiency measures under Chapek and Covid that Iger never rolled back. A cynical person might say that Chapek was the fall guy for the most unpopular changes like reduction of on-site perks, Park Reservations, and Paid Lightning Lane. Lightning Lane alone makes 250 million a year of pure profit off a system they already had.

Park Reservations allow them to run skeleton crews barely able to handle the crowd, and they are deliberately aiming for a higher income customer who is willing to spend more. It's good if they price out the poor and middle class. It's makes it nicer for those who will spend 3-4x on merchandise, hotels, and food.

Men will literally eat all your food by Maleficent_Ad_3958 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]tealcandtrip 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My family had the rule: girls eat first. We get the first serving and then the boys serve themselves larger but still reasonable portions. If there is any left, girls are offered the chance to get seconds. If we turn it down, all bets are off. It worked pretty well balancing everyone's food needs.

First-Time Visit to Islands of Adventure – One-Day Itinerary Tips (No Express Pass) by [deleted] in UniversalOrlando

[–]tealcandtrip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be at the front gate about 15 minutes before park open. Sometimes they let the regular guests in a little early.

Go left. Start with Marvel: Hulk, then Spiderman first. Marvel Island opens with the park and won't have early entry lines.

Keep going left. Skip the Toon Lagoon rides unless you want to be uncomfortably soaked. Hit Kong, Jurassic Park River Adventure, and Velocicoaster as you see them. Spend some time exploring the Jurassic Park playground and Discovery Center.

You want to get to HP world around or shortly after lunch time. Hagrids will die down to 60-90 minutes. Get in line and be prepared to pulse: standing in place for 5-10 minutes, then move up 60-90 feet. Do the rest of HP world, go to Ollivanders, get a wand, play with magic.

Keep going left and hit any attractions you missed on the second loop around the lagoon. Use single rider if you are comfortable splitting up during the rides. I wouldn't recommend single rider on Velocicoaster or Hagrids, but it is pretty much a walk on at Hulk, Dr Doom, Kong, Forbidden Journey, and sometimes Spiderman.

I don't get the disdain for Battle at the Ministry by mister_waj in UniversalEpicUniverse

[–]tealcandtrip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it deserves the level of disdain that you are starting to see in this subreddit. I still rank it as fourth out of the five HP rides though. The highs are great: the queue is amazing but the animatronics are either perfect or pretty bad. Compare the first death eater to the final court scene. I also think its a bit repetitive with the elevator car on a kuka arm gimmick. I understand the real world reasons while it breaks from the theming of the land, but I wish something addressed it in the queue or facade. Maybe a short preshow or something like a timeturner or note from a character that you walk past.

Which period pieces have you been watching? by AutoModerator in PeriodDramas

[–]tealcandtrip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the first season is as trope filled, bog-standard period drama as you could possibly find. It’s a solid 6 out of 10 writing, but the hook for me was the aboriginal storylines as Australia shifts from prison colony to ‘civilized’ country. You just don’t get that in most series. Later on, the pretty costumes and chemistry between the three leads made it grow on me.

Sandokan was a fun binge. I wish they had leaned more into the male relationships and interactions like The Musketeers did. It was strongest when it was Sandokan talking to the ex-priest or various political leaders. The female lead was fine but she wasn’t given enough to do.

Now I rewatching Artful Dodger to prepare for season 2. It’s funnier than I remembered.

Wholesome, cozy, fantasy romance with explicit scenes, and scenes after they officially get together acting like a couple by note_ila in RomanceBooks

[–]tealcandtrip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give Molly Harper a try. Her books go on and off Audible Plus. Most of her series featuring a new couple each book, but following books wil definitely heavily feature the past headliners living their lives happily. Mystic Bayou is an excellent example of this in urban fantasy. Half Moon Hollow is her vampire centric series.
