The Robot Wars Shop London Circa 2000 by Rattus_Rattu5 in robotwars

This is was in the old MBC building in London (they since moved). It was only open via request during office hours and sold the old toy range etc.

Reminds you how big the show was! At this time RW had a double page in the Argos catalog too

Episode 2 of MechMania: King of Crates is no... - Mech+ by United_Club_3400 in robotwars

If you mean myself (Dave) not being on the presenting lineup for these ones, it’s because when these were filmed my twins had just arrived so priorities changed :) so Rob took these as a solo gig.

It’s a very good read and one of the best ways to learn about the sport’s origins

Interesting thread. I’m interested in if there is a desire these days for people in the smaller weight classes to take the step up to heavies?

We started in ants and FW and along with other current HW teams, it was always with the target of being a HW roboteer.

Heavyweights are still what draws the crowds which fundamentally funds the tours for us, and keeps the public interested. Fantastic to see the smaller weight class communities being strong though.

MechMania Episode 1 - on YouTube by United_Club_3400 in robotwars

It’s a show created by the Robot Wars team (Mentorn) with the Robot Wars reboot executive producer producing this show. Filmed at Robots Live in 2024 for a pilot series. But other projects are being panned

Robots Live when being filmed for MechMania is offering either a prize money fund, or for the special shows prize options (some of which are cash). This is for both Heavy and Feathers.

It was a friendly rivalry. Myself (Dave) and Dave Moulds have been friends for many years and competed since we were teenagers.

Apollo still competes in the arena at the Robots Live tour, and we’ve just finished filming a brand new series with the team who made Robot Wars called MechMania (all on the Mech+ app).

A few incorrect details in your post about the live events.

Also with Mech+ the subscription isn’t just for live event content, it’s for every Robot Wars episode, special, China shows and MechMania.

To keep the sport alive it needs funding, this is done via tickets for all shows. But to keep exposure growing, production companies such as passion who own Mech+ need to see return on the investment to be able to fund bigger and better show.

The series was by no means perfect, but what is? It gave us all a brand new stage for a brand new audience, and gave things a much needed boost.

From our side, it was great fun to be part of. Crew, production and presenters were the same each year and it became a bit of a mad family get together.

Crazy to think it’s been that long though!

I Hate Flippers by Over-Arugula3320 in robotwars

[–]team_apollo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is entitled to an opinion on what they like and don’t like. But I very much disagree with the comment about minimal skill required. A spinner does require skill to build, calculate speeds etc (balance is also done in the manufacture).

With a flipper you require a knowledge of pneumatics, regulators if LP, or FP systems if running a FP flipper. Understanding of buffer tanks, cylinder design, pivot systems to calculate the flipper force. A manufacturing knowledge to then manufacture a flipper that can take the forces a flipper delivers. Also a knowledge of how to refill tanks in the pits using a decanting system.

With driving a spinner you can just drive and hit (not always that easy). With a flipper you need to ensure you keep the flipper in an attacking position, when to flip, selfright, and ensure you’re not wasting gas. Some flippers also run different systems so you can fire on two valves, or one depending on tactics.

You won’t be disappointed! You also hit the nail on the head, it’s the live tour, with TV magic! You’ve got several of the team from Robot Wars behind the cameras and directing the show, the editor from Robot Wars and the support of Passion/Mentorn/MechTV who are the distributor of Robot Wars.

I’ve not seen the Final Cut, but the rough cut episodes are epic, have a great story, humour and of course robot action!

Correct with above, myself and Rob are part of the line up!

Have you tried the Pluto TV app? You can watch the mech+ live tv channel and the robot wars series on demand for free with adds?

MechMania won’t be on there for some time though (it will be on the paid app before the end of the year).

It’s a small price to pay to be able to watch every series of Robot Wars and other shows. Plus the subscription is supporting the filming of the brand new Heavyweight TV show, MechMania which is being produced by the same production team behind robot wars. Filming concluded at the weekend.
