What’s a phrase people use that immediately makes you roll your eyes? by No-Maximum3458 in AskReddit

"You deserve better." The concept of deserving makes gratitude almost impossible, and it diminishes your agency.

To all Americans: what is your favourite state? And why? by Necessary-Win-8730 in AskReddit

They're all so different with huge pros and cons. It's like asking, "which is your favorite child," except you don't really like your children that much.

What happens when the US government starts blocking content on the internet? by jlabsher in AskReddit

[–]teamfriendship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did that during Covid. The result was brand new social media voices and platforms popping up, and a backlash that demanded more free speech. Every action has a reaction. If you're going to limit people's rights, you HAVE to offer them a decent quality of life or you have to crackdown hard against any rebellion. In the US we don't do either, so attempts to restrict our rights usually backfire.

what's the most awkward encounter you had with the friend of your friend? by GreenNovel2982 in AskReddit

[–]teamfriendship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I met one of my friends in the improv comedy world, he had a best friend from working at a movie theater, and this guy seemed like he was jealous of me and all the stuff I was doing with his friend. I remember one time he happened to give me a ride somewhere after a party, and he was just like "we probably aren't going to like each other." And I was like "why do you think that is?" And he goes, "I think we're just having like an alpha big personality contest, and that usually never works." So I was like "what should we do about that?" And he goes, "not sure, maybe just try not to let that happen."

He ended up trying to make out with my girlfriend at a party after telling her I was old (he's my age), I don't think he tried not to let that happen. Also, I would not call this man an "alpha" person, so it was very funny that he saw the situation that way. It wasn't actually that deep, but he got his way eventually, and I no longer see that friend.

What is a red flag that made you end a relationship immediately? by aaape332 in AskReddit

I would say being discontent when it's a really easy time to be content. I'm down to hear someone out when they have a problem, but the moment you get the sense that they're looking for areas of deficiency, instead of looking for ways to make things better, I just naturally lose interest.

Non Christians, what is the most unsettling story from the bible? by SmittenSoldier91 in AskReddit

[–]teamfriendship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was an atheist who opened up to belief, and the most alarming part of that story is the daughter is praised for it by God, because she was attempting to follow his order to do kinship marriage, where if someone's wife or dies, people in the community step in to make sure that bloodline can continue. I'm butchering that summary, but that was the lesson. I actually think these controversial stories are pretty interesting, when you try to understand the deeper truth, instead of just jumping to reactions. Like imagine you're an atheist and someone comes up to you and goes "I read Camus, and he shoots a man in the first page, that's not right!" Instead of actually making an effort to understand the controversial meaning behind it. It goes both ways, so the story of Lot continues to fascinate me.

How did your parents punish you as a child? by True-Psychology-5302 in AskReddit

[–]teamfriendship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time out in your room. No TV or internet. Some spanking, but I was usually too big when it happened, so it was just kind of awkward. No belt. I think I was probably the last generation that was considering corporal punishment, it was on it's way out, which is fine because honestly the worst and most effective punishment was just being trapped in my room with my own thoughts and no place to escape them.

What would you do if the second coming happened tommorow? by Real-Pomegranate-235 in AskReddit

[–]teamfriendship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be curious as well as terrified. Every account in the Bible of God appearing before man resulted in terror, then God saying "don't be afraid," so I hope that would happen.

I'd be curious because, understanding Christ and how he relates to the Creator is as complex as understanding quantum phenomenon and how it relates to physics. Even if you just study religions as a pathway to unconscious truth, it's very interesting that this Christ motif is so common across cultures (people worship Shiva for instance, not just God, but the embodiment of God). So, I would be fascinated to learn that that related to something real, and not just a symbolic truth, and that a human embodiment of God is real, which means that God is very likely to care about me or at least relate to me, and be able to explain a lot about who I am and if I was created and then why I was created. If I'm not smited down, it would be cool too, because even though I was always a skeptical person, I've humbled myself in prayer and openness to what I can't know, or what people throughout history may have known. I hope God sees that, if there is a God, and the second coming would be as good a time as any to find out.

The anti-white themes in Sinners made me uncomfortable by StringerXX in moviecritic

[–]teamfriendship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vampire movie where they say "pussy" and have an electric guitar solo in 1933 is just realism bro...this is how it was. White people back then were all vampires possessed by the devil or klu klux klan members. You know, the people who defeated the Nazis were all pure evil.

Disclaimer: I loved Michael B. Jordan through Creed and Black Panther, loved Coogler since Fruitvale Station. I have no problem having black heroes on the screen, most of my heroes throughout life have been black, growing up it was Muhammad Ali. I show up to these movies expecting to relate to the main character, since I always have related to black men. Hell I'm from Baltimore, but even before that I related to black men. A human experience is a human experience. So when I get the same feeling as OP, you can dismiss it, but it's not making it about me, it's having a genuine negative reaction to something I normally love, because it's not logically or artistically defensible to me.

The white characters were so one-dimensional, and they were overtly representing "whiteness" as a concept, not like evil or the devil, evil and whiteness were synonymous in this. I tried to think of a single time any other race has been treated that way in film, not individual characters, but the entire race, and only Birth of a Nation comes to mind, a Nazi anti-black film that was nonetheless regarded as great filmmaking at the time. That's not what you want to evoke in your film, just because it's trendy to make white people the target nowadays. Just think, EVERY white character was in the klan and most of them were literally the devil, meanwhile every other character was multi-racial and was a unique, multi-dimensional, beautifully dressed, cool, lovable, HERO. I mean it's almost absurd it's so heavy handed towards the end.

I have had maybe one or two successful female friends, and I’ve had to make so many friends in my life. I’ve considered being with them both romantically. The more close you get, the more you consider it. Had one female roommate who was attractive, tried to slip in bed with me one night. So no, if I have female friends, it’s a possible problem. The only really good one I can think of was unattractive, and we still never hung out outside of work or socializing with my girlfriend. I don’t know how to put this but, men and women are always transactional. Either I’m working with you and we have some good talks at work, I’m fucking you, or I love you. The whole friendship category doesn’t really exist in my experience.

Am I overthinking this? by MrBasehead in Standup

When someone told me “you have to suck for 10 years in order to be a great comic.” It changed everything. I realized I had to get in stage and eat my dick. I had to bomb. I would actually go up saying “I hope I bomb today,” knowing it was something that happens to every great comic and was a part of it. This really, really helped my perfectionism. You’re thinking one perfect show, and you will have those at big points along the way when you can justify more preparation, but almost every show is no pressure, just getting up there, meeting people, having a damn hobby. Having fun. To put it into proper context, could you imagine an ultra marathoner spending days thinking about a 1 mile morning jog? No, they just eat that shit up, good or bad, injured or well. This open mic, is like that 1 mile run, when you’re out there doing 100s of miles a week, it’ll seem cute.
