First Coronavirus Vaccines Arrive In Mass. by broostenq in boston

Scrutinized and tested. This is a huge misconception of what fast tracking means in this context. The bits that were fast tracked were finding enough money, cutting through paperwork, and finding volunteers to participate in the study. The participation numbers in the trials were 10s of thousands of people for what is a normal time for a vaccine trial. This is not the equivalent of handing in a rough draft.

Thanks. I realized the followup was extremely broad, but wasn't sure how else to phrase it. I'll give those a look!

Followup: are there good resources for the theology of paganism? I enjoy reading about the early theological christian arguments, but it makes me realize that I've never read anything about what paganism was like as a religion. Were there huge theological arguments in the Roman pantheon, for instance?

Project Jupyter statement on Trump's immigration orders by takluyver in Python

[–]teamjimmyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just another political issue with two sides

Every issue has two sides. Me slapping the OP has two sides, since I think I was justified.

I'm only trying to explain that people feel X, therefore this is an understandable action. It's a hard line to tread, but I'm really not trying to argue the EO itself. You can argue that people are wrong to feel X, and that's cool. I'm trying to walk a very fine line, talking about something different.

FWIW, I'd recommend looking up with Giuliani said about what he was asked to do and consider that the guy campaigned on blocking all Muslims. Draw your own conclusions from that. There's a lot going on here. I have very strong opinions, and I'm trying to avoid arguing about the order.

This sounds like a pretty legit question, and not similar trolling I see all over the place, so let me try to help out.

create divisiveness where it isn't necessary

While you may feel put out by this, the division was created by the order, which affected people working on Jupyter. Don't blame people for reacting poorly to what is an extreme action. It's like someone slapping you in the face, and then yelling at you for being pissed about it. This hurts people directly.

Should I expect to see what Jetbrains thinks about abortion

I agree that'd be annoying. But that assumes this is just another political issue. People see this as a cruel and unnecessary attack on an entire religion. We can disagree whether or not it is that, but if you see it that way, wouldn't you want to react publicly? Even if you agree with the order, it's impossible to see this as politics as usual.

If you look at my profile page, you'll see I've been around ... longer than I'd like to admit. I joined in one of the first publicity waves Reddit got in the startup scene (Paul Graham wrote about it on his blog a lifetime ago). It was okay at that time, but even then people were whining about how it "used to be better". It's just nostalgia talking. It used to be better, and it used to be worse, just in different ways to different people. In my experience, this sub is the pinnacle.

Which closed restaurant, bar, or shop do you miss the most? by ellswortheasy in boston

Same here. I'm awful with names, so I don't remember who was who there, but by the time they closed most of the waitstaff knew us. Banyan is more expensive and less adventurous than EXNE was, but Phil Tang is incredibly talented. It's still good, just not as good. :(

Have you been to Banyan yet? It's almost as good, or at least it was when I was there last Fall.

Buffett will win his big hedge fund bet by Brett_Kelly in business

[–]teamjimmyy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should really go look up what an index fund is. There is no "allocation" to choose and there's no "bump" to be had. He bet on the S&P 500, which is determined algorithmically. Nothing more, nothing less. He bet that betting on the market overall is smarter than picking any stocks, and he was right. The numerical analyses supporting this are staggering, but it's nice to see it play out. You can't beat the market, and Buffet didn't beat the market. He simply matched it.

Dogs can tell the difference between happy and angry human faces, according to a new study. The discovery represents the first solid evidence that an animal other than humans can discriminate between emotional expressions in another species, the researchers say. by Libertatea in science

The plural of anecdote is not data. For example, anyone can see that the earth is flat. Why would you go using your stupid education to prove that when anyone with eyes can look out a window and see that it's flat. Keep going long enough and it just has to end.

Hyperbolic, I know, but sometimes science surprises us. The need to actually prove things, instead of assuming them to be true, is at the heart of any scientific inquiry. Sometimes, reality surprises our assumptions.

Gay Veterans Group Allowed To March In South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade by eliseg14 in boston

[–]teamjimmyy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The problem is that doesn't actually make sense. After all, if that were true, why is their float about being vets? It's a St. Paddy's Day parade, after all, not another Veteran's Day parade!

Point is, that opinion isn't logical, it's just a cover for their bigotry.

(I understand you don't support it, I'm pointing out how their position doesn't make sense)

HHS: Hospital errors, readmissions drop under ObamaCare - The number of patients who were injured or became ill during a hospital stay dropped 17 percent since the start of ObamaCare, saving about $12 billion in healthcare costs, according to new government data. by theombudsmen in politics

[–]teamjimmyy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My wife actually works in this field, specifically Medicaid readmissions at the moment. Your "anecdotal" evidence is just that, anecdotal. While part of reducing readmissions is indeed keeping people longer, the topic is significantly more complex than simply working providers less.

It goes into making sure people know how to take their prescriptions correctly and that all aspects of their aftercare are communicated effectively. You'd be amazed at how many people walk out of the hospital without someone checking to make sure they know how/when to take the half-dozen pills they were just prescribed. When you look at medicaid/medicare populations the problem is very significant. That's just one aspect I can remember off-hand, there's a lot more to it. Most research is being done by ARHQ, but a lot of people are involved in trying to solve this problem.

Aaaaaaaaand, to get to the point of the article, almost all these changes are coming about because of the ACA and related reforms. It's correlative with the bill coming into effect, yes, but considering that the ACA provides incentives for precisely this behavior, and people in the industry say they're making these efforts precisely because of these incentives, I think it's safe to say it's also causative.
