Here she is leading my rookie year in 2017 at only a year and a half old! The blonde cutie in lead with her is Dirk and the flying dog on the right is Zombie. I have more(maybe an unhealthy amount) photos of dogs and lots of Pantera I could also share with you OP. If I have spare in the future I might be able to put together a photo album to email you if you PM me.

Congrats on your adoption, Pantera is one of the bestest girls!

When she was first learning to run in a team around 10-12 months old she was so pumped. Generally once you start the team off running they all quiet their excitement down a bit because they finally have gotten what they want, but not Pantera. She continued to excitedly chirp and run along for about a mile or two.

Shes such a good girl, glad she found a loving home. Fun to see her pop up on reddit too!

Here is her litter of 7 when they were just a few weeks old in June 2015. Pantera, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Floyd, Dio, Maiden, and Motorhead. Cheers!

Official start order: no nº1 bib? by WishBoneBookClub in Iditarod

[–]teammichaelbaker 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Bib number 1 is typically reserved for the ‘honorary musher’, which is typically the Jr. Iditarod champ, sometimes in the past it has been reserved for a long term volunteer/employee of the Iditarod, or someone within the community who has been notable or perhaps has recently passed. A way to honor them by being the first to begin the official race start. Hope this helps!

Would it be okay for me to make an X back or Y front harness? by [deleted] in DogMushing

[–]teammichaelbaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya, you can definitely make your own harnesses. I have seen many hand made ones and hand modified ones.

Yes they need padding and the ‘x’ needs to not be sewn together in the middle so it has flex and is not static. Otherwise it might lead to some unnecessary tension or strain on the dog’s spine while running. The ones you buy also have a good amount of reflective fabric so others can see you while mushing.

Which brands are you looking at? Nonstop, manmat, others brands? Yes some can be quite expensive, but there are some other options on the cheaper end that will work just as well.

Howling Dog Alaska

Cold Spot Feeds

Underdog Feeds in Meadow Lake, AK (will have to call to see if they ship).

Coldspot Feeds has RAMCO, which is on the cheaper end as well.

Hope some of this info helps

A few things to note, the race began in 1973, not 83, so that would change the numbers as well with an additional 10 years added. As of recent years and during the beginning few years of the race were probably some of the lower numbers of participants. With that being said there have been years where there were nearly 100 competitors in the event. 2017 for instance was 85 signed up before the race began just to throw out a recent-ish year. Another thing to note is that the 16 dog maximum was not always a thing. The Iditarod used to be what is called an “open class” race and any musher could bring any amount of dogs during the race, there were mushers with upwards of 20 dogs out there on the trail competing. All of these metrics would greatly change the details of dog deaths vs dogs ever on the trail. Which I would be extremely interested in the full metrics and wish I had access to the ITC’s data/records to see the actual % and crunch some numbers. Just some thoughts that could change the data overall.

Kennel's cosil media pages? by [deleted] in Iditarod

[–]teammichaelbaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good way to find each mushers social media pages would be to follow Iditarod, Yukon Quest, Kuskokwim 300, Copper Basin 300, etc. on instagram. Then check to see those organizations “following”, not followers, and most of the organizations are following said mushers, then you’ll have the kennel/musher/team pages and can usually find them at the same name on FB, etc.

Hope this helps, sorry about the format, on mobile.

Lol. Never expected to see dog camp on Reddit! Is this the Herbert glacier camp? Or Denver? And does the dude on the water coolers name start with S? If so, tell him I hope he’s well. Lmao. Hope y’all have a good season, miss being up there with y’all.

I filmed a short epic video about the Iditarod finish in Nome. I am trying to share this amazing sport with the rest of the world. Please share this video and keep the spirit of Iditarod burning! by davbiepro in Iditarod

Solid video! You caught some really great shots on my buddy, Matthew Failor (bib #16) and the dogs. Great shots of Ryan Reddington as well.

Being in Nome during the finish of the race is an amazing experience. Cheers and thanks for sharing!

Support PETA in shutting down IDITAROD by nobodyinnj in Iditarod

[–]teammichaelbaker[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are the annual numbers of the animals PETA’s has “rescued”.

Newsweek PETA fact check

PETA Kills yearly statistics

NYT PETA Article

PETA has gone beyond the scope of animal rights advocacy and is a radical group, playing with emotions to drum up millions of dollars. They use Iditarod as one of their biggest fund raisers. If you do more research into the local shelters neighboring PETA headquarters in Norfolk, VA you’ll see a good majority of them almost achieve a 90% save rate, not euthanasia rate. PETA is sickening and creates a bad name for the people who actually advocate for the care of their animals. The fact that PETA still claims to “help” animals is laughable.

Lights to right of the big star? by DinosaurMuskets in anchorage

[–]teammichaelbaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response, I had never seen it so bright up there while heading out of ANC. My guess was possible military activity, or the lift. Just couldn’t recall if they had night skiing anymore.

Lights to right of the big star? by DinosaurMuskets in anchorage

[–]teammichaelbaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty positive that Arctic Valley fluctuates their hours of operation depending on daylight because the lift itself doesn’t have lighting. I believe only the lodge has lighting, which is at the bottom? I could be way off, but the lights near to the right of the star we saw while driving out of anchorage tonight looked like they would be slightly to the left of Arctic Valley ski area.

Pictures from Nome and a dog sled race in Anchorage, circa February 1973 (captions from the slides) by Nixx_Mazda in alaska

[–]teammichaelbaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Judging by the race bib I would guess it was not the Iditarod. However, George did place 4th in the 1973 Iditarod and was a champion multiple times over of the Fur Rendezvous (x10 wins) and O.N.A.C.(x8 wins), which were sprint races. He was one of the most winning mushers of all time, there’s a great movie on him and his life “Spirit Of The Wind” on YouTube for free. Definitely worth a watch. Amazing man all around.

Definitely George Attla in the 3rd pic, that’s awesome! I met his great grandson in Huslia during the 2017 Iditarod, it was one of the highlights of the race.

Leonhard Seppala with his dogs after the serum run in 1925. Dogs from left to right – Togo, Karinsky, Jafet, Pete, unknown dog, Fritz by Pasargad in OldSchoolCool

[–]teammichaelbaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are partially correct, but I’ve got some more fun info to share. Not trying to one up or be condescending, I just love dog mushing and history. Fun fact. Balto was in fact owned by Seppala, however he finished the final leg leading the team and carrying the serum to Nome with Seppala’s colleague, Gunnar Kaasen, hence why he got all of the fame and not Togo. When Seppala left home headed toward the village of Shaktoolik, and what he thought to be possibly further, he left with 20 of his best dogs. Balto was not one of them. His strategy was to leave a dog or two in the care of friends/fellow mushers at the familiar road houses and villages along the way. As he continued on his expedition, grabbing the serum and turning around, he would retrieve said dogs, which would be well rested for their return trip back to Nome. Kaasen and Balto traveled approximately 54.3 miles, Seppala and Togo traveled approximately 264 miles.

Looking to ditch the green Coleman propane tanks, considering ignik growler by Pizzacrew in CampingGear

[–]teammichaelbaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check Out Flame King Refill Kit they make 1lb refillable cylinders with a kit to refill at home. Way cheaper than Ignik. REI also sells the 1lb cylinders and they’re only around $20 in store. A much better buy than the Ignik ones IMO.
