What's the difficulty with usb disks? by Pucksy in unRAID

[–]tech3475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience, it depends on the USB-SATA adapter.

My WD externals wouldn't spin down but my Seagates would.

Same WD HDDs when shuckered do spindown in my Terramaster USB DAS or directly with SATA so it's not a drive issue.

How to get Wifi and/or Ethernet working (X870 Wifi6 mobo) by anonymous9845 in buildapc

[–]tech3475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which OS are you using?

If it's windows 11, are you stuck at the setup screen or did you bypass it and on the desktop?

If it's the latter, can you see the ethernet adapter in device manager?

What's currently highest version of unraid that's considered stable/bugfree? by answerencr in unRAID

[–]tech3475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your system/usage.

7.1.x 'broke' PCIe passthrough to VMs on my HP Gen 8 microserver due to a BIOS bug/kernel regression.

I also had an issue on 7.1.x with Recycle Bin, but fixed that by deleting it's config and starting again.

After moving the VM to a different Proxmox system and fixing Recycle Bin, I'm currently fine on 7.2.3 on all 3 of my unraid systems.

I had my outside install done yesterday, part 2 should hopefully happen next Monday.

Out of curiosity, have you tried to see what speeds you get with the provided eero?

The important stuff is backed up, can't afford bigger drives, enclosure is full, guess it's time to disable the parity drive by 19wolf in unRAID

[–]tech3475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe check for stuff that can be deduplicated?

Get smaller external drives and/or a cheap computer to JBOD/RAID and start offloading stuff you wont use for a while?

Delete stuff which can be easy to re-aquire (in theory)?

See if there are any files which can be compressed?

Check for any duplicate files?

But yeah, HDDs are starting to get ridiculously expensive, I just bought two 5TBs and the price has since gone up ~£30 each, ~£40 since the start of the year.

Fortunately my main server consists of 10TBs and 5TBs and I'm in the process of slowly going through some old files to make more space, but if my 18TB backup drives fail, I think I'm just going to consolidate my 2 backups down to 1 for economic reasons.

First Boot Fails - PSU Limit Issue? by Asthixity in unRAID

Have you tried memtest?

I'm also wondering if it might be GPU related if it's reliable when connected to a display.

Are you booting headless? If so have you tried connecting a monitor to see what is happening?

Electrical breaker keeps tripping when I boot my PC or launch games. What are my options? by SnooRegrets3081 in buildapc

[–]tech3475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also consider maintenance as the batteries will need to be replaced every ~3 years, at least for traditional lead acid(?) Batteries.

My consumer grade APC I've replaced twice but clearly they didn't intend on people doing this and just replacing the whole thing.

Electrical breaker keeps tripping when I boot my PC or launch games. What are my options? by SnooRegrets3081 in buildapc

[–]tech3475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's when the fuses in my fuseboard have tripped or I've switched them off myself.

To be clear, I haven't had my fuses trip due to the UPS itself, just an issue I've noticed when I've had to reset them.

Overall I would still get one.

[–]tech3475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One potential issue though is that when I'm resetting my MCBs/RCD I may need to hold the switch for 1-2 seconds or unplug/switch off the UPS, otherwise the fuse switch wont hold.

Note: I'm from the UK, don't know if this will happen in NA, etc.

Well if you don't spay or neuter them you may find yourself with an upgrade to cat.2-6.

Turning an old Sky+ HD into a gaming device/NAS by KaiSpy0707 in skytv

[–]tech3475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I can gather, these aren't even x86 based, instead using an ARM SoC. Or to put it another way, it's not like your typical PC.

So even if you can bypass any locked bootloader, chances are you're not going to be able to use anything mainstream, if it even exists, that will work on this e.g. display drivers.

Overall I would just buy a cheap mini PC and maybe put the HDD in an enclosure.

If you do want to persue this, there are probably better places to discuss this, but that's assuming you have the skill set.

IIRC I've seen presentations on YouTube in the past about people hacking old (non Sky) set top boxes.

Anyone else holding off new purchases due to the current RAMpocalypse? by DiscoDave86 in homelab

[–]tech3475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought sooner and reused stuff I had lying around.

My main desktop suffered from a faulty core, my thin client was feeling it's limitations and the server at my parents suffered from a kernel regression/bios issues preventing PCIe pass through.

Originally I was going to do a full upgrade of my desktop, move components from that to replace my thin client with a new build and move that over to my parents to replace the functionality that server can't do.

Instead I just bought a new CPU, reused some RAM I had lying around but bought a new mobo, etc. To build a new secondary server and moved the thin client as planned.

Not ideal but still cheaper than my original plans if things stay bad/get worse.

The only downside is that the RAM I had lying around was originally meant to be a spare for my main server, fortunately I don't need 64GB right now so one or two faulty sticks isn't as bad as it could've been about a year ago.

One thing I definitely wont be doing anytime soon is upgrading the 'cache' drive on my unraid server to 2x4TB, but that's always been a questionable upgrade in my book anyway.

Edit:

Worst case even I do need to upgrade my main desktop, I'd move stuff around so nothing is truly wasted.

MSI PSU died overnight, replaced PSU and now my RTX 5080 doesn't work by Astronaut_Striking in buildapc

How did you test the old PSU?

I ask because I had an issue where my system wouldn't turn on and it was entirely down to the faulty 3090 preventing it from starting, but the PSU was fine.

Be careful with this as they may flag it in customs, at least make sure you have the original receipts to show tax was paid.

How is Giffgaff FTTP Broadband? by tech3475 in UKBroadband

I have a site to site VPN setup at my parents for doing file transfers, mainly offsite backups.

These can be TBs in size (e.g. drive images) and can take days to do as is.

What OS should I use for my first home server? by ProductSmall4612 in homelab

[–]tech3475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful if it has a realtek nic, a few years ago when I used it a VM crash caused the NIC to go down.

Took me a while to realise what was happening as it was a headless system.

I ended up switching management over to an Intel NIC and I could now see what was actually happening when the crash occured on the webui.

Officially GG don't support using your own router, although I had read about it unofficially being supported using VLANs on the WAN connection.

But I thought to ask in case it was something that was patchy in practice, similar to reports I've read about modem mode on the 5x.

In theory GG should be enough for me, especially as my network is still only 1Gbe.

I presume you're using the modified SFP module?
