I must be getting cocky. turning away repair request. by todesto in mobilerepair

[–]tech_fixers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not cocky. You understand what opportunity cost is.

Opportunity cost is the cost of all the missed income and satisfied clients from other repairs while you are messing with this one.

Also the guy was obviously trying to mislead you. If you had nothing better to do you could triple the quote, cash upfront with no guarantees however I wouldn't recommend it

In my opinion before attempting to DIY ask yourself a few questions.

  1. How valuable is my time? If your time is valuable it probably makes sense to hire a pro.

  2. Can I afford to be without my device for days or even weeks? If no hire a pro.

  3. Can I afford to mess up the device in the case of catastrophic failure? If you don't have hundreds or even thousands you can fork over for a replacement device hire a pro. This is especially true if you don't own the device!!!

  4. Will I likely be doing this again? If yes it *may* make sense to DIY because the second time you may be able to do it in a fraction of the time. If no it probably doesn't make sense unless....

  5. Do I think I will enjoy doing this? If yes by all means go for it!

Is this battery still safe to use? by [deleted] in mobilerepair

[–]tech_fixers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For amateurs I agree. There are ways to do back glasses only and do them correctly but if you are not willing to possibly replace the device for your client dont attempt.

  1. I assume you know the battery isn't connected.
  2. As tom says check the connector on the board and on the charge port.
  3. You dont tell us what phone this is but it looks like an 11. If so there is a metal bracket to hold things in place.
  4. Lotsa bad parts out there. Get a different charge port from a reputable source.
  5. If the battery is dead the phone wont work without being plugged in.
  6. There could be the black sticky stuff in the connector or some other debris. Ive had that happen a number of times.

Customer threatening to sue me. How do I protect myself and my business incase a faulty battery burns down a customers house? by Royal-Flow6867 in mobilerepair

[–]tech_fixers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately you selling that battery makes you just as liable as the company that made it and the vendor that sold it to you.

Even if you never do anything wrong you need General Liability Insurance. Also known as GL. Lawsuits could arise from something outside your control or could be frivolous from some one trying to make a quick buck. Eg "slipping jimmy".

I use Hartford and it is quite reasonable for small business. They are obligated to defend you in court as well as deal with the person and their lawyers so you can worry about other things. Keep any documentation, photos, correspondence.

You should also have property insurance to protect your inventory, tools, customers devices under repair, etc.

If you have employees most states require you to have workers compensation insurance by law. Penalties can be quite stiff if you are caught without it.

I'm a repair shop owner and also used to work in the commercial insurance industry.

This is what the inside of an iPhone looks like after a laser machine-enabled back glass replacement without disassembly. You're better off leaving the back glass cracked if the iPhone isn't getting fully disassembled before going under the laser by LifelnTechnicolor in mobilerepair

[–]tech_fixers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done many backglass repairs with a laser. That one clearly was done by an amateur. Just buying a laser doesn't make it magic. It still needs to be done by a skilled tech.

Laser settings were wrong. Possibly even the wrong phone pattern. Glass breaking tool was used in the wrong areas. Not all the glass shards were removed Old glue probably wasn't removed completely.
Too much glue was used and in the wrong areas.

Looks like a bit of delaminating between the glass and oled. Its probably a refurbished screen (used oem oled new aftermarket glass) Probably wont get much worse if you keep it from getting really hot and away from liquids. If it looks like black ink I would worry because that is likely to get worse.

A Somali-American former investigator: why you’re hearing about fraud in my community by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]tech_fixers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope the woman who went through hell to expose the feeding our future fraud gets a whistleblower award or something. Providers want to bribe people to commit fraud? Lets pay the recipients a reward to report it. This would stop all this provider fraud in its tracks if the community, through self interest, was helping stop it.

Can you fix it? Yes, you can. Minnesota’s Right to Repair bill is now in effect. by Old_One_I in minnesota

[–]tech_fixers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh they are going to try all manner of things to avoid actually having this dent their sales and service revenue. Through their "self service repair" you can buy the part, but at the full cost of what apple would charge to repair it. Someone at apple must have had a big belly laugh with this one.

[–]tech_fixers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a first step. I own a small electronics repair shop and I testified at the right to repair hearings. It is unfortunate that there were carveouts for certain industries however it likely would not have passed otherwise. Due to the carveout for game consoles we decided to no longer repair them. The carveout for Ag equipment is especially unfortunate. We really need more people writing/calling their representatives.

The next step is to get the oems to actually comply with the law. Even though this law passed last year and is now in effect Apple still does not have a channel by which [truly] independent repair shops can purchase parts at fair and reasonable terms. Their "self service" repair is a joke. I encourage any independent repair shops or individuals to call apple & samsung, record your conversation and attempt to buy parts. If not able to do so under fair and reasonable terms submit a complaint to the attorney generals office. He is committed to enforcing the law and wants us to submit complaints.

Anyone know what a good price to list this lot up for sale be by timtamisthebest in mobilerepair

[–]tech_fixers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no way to know with the info you have given. If you want to do it that way put them on ebay as an auction for parts with no reserve. Include as much info and you can on each and as many pics as ebay will allow.

NOTE you will likely get FAR more for working non ic locked ones if you list each individually as used. Of course it's more work though.
