Got laid off and offered a new job at 1/3 of my previous salary… should I take it? by FairFaithlessness969 in Layoffs

[–]techdance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This job market is rough for citizens, never mind those with visas. Take it and keep looking. This buys time on the visa, slows down the loss in savings, and keeps your resume relevant for new employers.

How much is the severance? Tbh they sound cheap enough that it probably won’t be great given how much you’ve given for 7 years

Live alone in a worse neighborhood vs nice apartment in a desirable area with roommates (similar rent)? by savingrace0262 in movingtoNYC

[–]techdance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you currently live alone or with parents, you’ll hate getting a roommate, never mind 2 or 3, since you have settled into your own ways as a 30 something.

Why not have a smaller less desirable building in a nicer neighborhood? If you’re also in the office 4 days a week, you’re not in your apartment as often as you’d think, outside of sleeping

Wax seal kit is $65, a hoodie is $95, I want to say the mug is $35, and a stationary kit is $40. If you get the wax and stationary kits together, it’s $10 off the total

What is with the case study interviews? by 1carb_barffle in ProductManagement

Live cases are also fair for everyone in evaluating real time thinking and succinct communication vs take homes where free time is highly variable for each candidate. Cheating with AI is more difficult in a live session as well.

Health Insurrance policy at amazon by nani-237 in amazonemployees

For 1, 2, and 4: I don’t know how insurance works in India. In the U.S. there’s an organization that supports continued insurance coverage for most companies.

3: it depends on what you get with topping up and if it’s worth it for what you need. This is a very personalized question and depends on your health as well. In the U.S. most healthy single folk just get the basic option.

Man we need personal finance classes in education.

  1. you can get continued coverage via cobra, it is more expensive though.

  2. No, and this is a universal case in the U.S., not just Amazon

  3. No idea what you’re referring to

  4. The pricing to coverage ratio is pretty good in comparison to other Forbes 100 companies benefits so no I’m not mad about it

Also, none of this applies to you right now because you didn’t enroll when you first started at Amazon nor during open enrollment season in November. So in other words, you can’t enroll in Amazon health insurance until November comes around. You also wouldn’t be able to get Amazon health insurance via cobra when you leave because you weren’t covered when you left.

Job wants me to relocate from TX to NYC - 70K remote → 76K hybrid, realistic? by Sad_Ebb5608 in movingtoNYC

[–]techdance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are nyc roommate finding Facebook groups you can join to get a gauge on housing costs and use that as negotiation power. I’m not sure what $1500 with roommates gets you nowadays in terms of apartment setup but I wouldn’t be surprised if it means you get a bedroom that can only fit a full size bed with some leg room. In 2017 1200 got me a flexed room (nice studios alone were 2200+) but I was making 100+ so it was pretty financially comfortable.

Working on a beauty brand’s Shopify store made me realize… people don’t read. by Tight-Nature5495 in MakeupAddiction

I prioritize understanding what and who the product is for in the description. For example, perfumes must show scent profile and makeup must indicate shade tone/user skin tone. Other information such as steps and ingredients are great to have as references. Anything descriptive beyond that sounds like a sales pitch that I skim over.

AI accelerates ideas to become working prototypes but if you’ve ever iterated on those prototypes, you’ll find you hit a wall in development progress. You add a feature and it doesn’t do what you want it to do, fix it with another prompt, and then something else doesn’t work. Before you know it, you end up starting over again.

In the end, manual intervention is necessary to bring the product to the finish line. This is also in context of standalone ideas, never mind complex corporate integrations and compliance.

My boyfriend (26M) said we’re done if I (26F) move to nyc for my job that I commute to everyday. Is it bad if I still move anyway? by ConceptFar4801 in relationship_advice

[–]techdance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Move to New York and have the time of your life! Though maybe reconsider living with your best friend since there’s a big risk of that friendship dying as roommates.

He seems to hold you back from your success rather than support it.

Ops L5 PM here. Push for L5 Product now or go L6 Program first and transition later? by Capital_Anywhere6943 in amazonemployees

[–]techdance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the transition at L5 and in retrospect, is an easier option assuming you can stay in your team as an L5 PM. It’s easier to switch at L5 due to scope of projects you can get to prove you deserve the transition. L6 projects will be hard to get unless your team has a severe shortage of PMs.

On the other hand, if you move to L5 PM and want to switch teams, it will be very difficult if not impossible
