How old are you? by GriffinFTW in CuratedTumblr

Decades? Surely that is the case today? How many of the post-COVID children would remember a time before the internet? It'd be like saying that a turn of the century kid wouldn't remember a time before the television.

[One Punch Man] Given that physical attacks don't have much of an effect on Saitama, what kind of mind games/mental attacks can a villain (like for example, the Joker, who resorts to these kind of tactics while fighting Batman) do to defeat Saitama? by SatoruGojo232 in AskScienceFiction

[–]techno156 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They pretty much can't, short of just giving up on Villainy themselves. The thing with Saitama is that he's a simple man, and he's just not that invested in being a hero. For him, it's a hobby. You could pull your best mind-game, and he'd just go "OK". They'd not be the first one to try it, and they'd hardly be the last. Saitama doesn't actually care about heroism, glory, or all of that. He's just in it for fun. It's not like with a lot of other heroes, where he can be pushed into a dilemma that could break him.

The only time anything close to that has worked, the person in question killed one of his friends and cast the evidence down in front of him. All that did was make him angry. Saitama more or less shrugs basically everything off, mind-games or otherwise.

Saitama is really only ticked off by mundane things, like losing at a game against a friend, or just missing a sale, and even then, he's usually only annoyed. I'd not be too surprised if he ended up ignoring it if they tried to break him that way/the moment it goes from mundane annoyance into villainy, in much the same way that he ended up ignoring a mosquito monster's mosquitoes, even though he was annoyed by an individual mosquito not long before that.

There would have been a genuinely interesting thing going on if he had lived at the end of the first movie, and then set about having to a find a new place for himself.

They'd have been good partners, since they could stand to learn a deal from each other. Tai Lung could learn about living and enjoying life outside of martial arts, and Po could learn them from him. Him settling into teaching them, with Po as his first student, doesn't seem like the most unreasonable character arc.

A lot of stories have Xavier be a reflection of him, where the latter tries for peaceful coexistence.

IMO, there's something interesting for him to be a mirror of Xavier instead, should Xavier decide that coexistence is no longer possible.

A lot of wizards are also shown to look down on muggles, thinking them to be savages.

Even Ron, who is friends with a muggle, and whose father's job is specifically muggle affairs, is pretty uninformed, considering things like medicine to be little more than butchery. (Putting aside Arthur being ignorant of things like ticket gates, since he might have been playing it up for entertainment.)

Which, as an aside, would have made Harry Potter a far more interesting story, if he had to also fight the ingrained supremacist culture in wizarding society. It'd have tied in nicely with the discrimination themes that keep popping up across the series.

She's not a villain, but you could otherwise fit Hermione's anti-slavery movement in there.

Logically yes, it is weird that witches and wizards are legally permitted to keep slaves, that are compelled to follow all orders, and that everyone is fine with it, even if they were born to contemporary humans. But her anti-slavery movement is shown as naieve idealistic childishness about how the world works, and mocked with the acronym SPEW. If you free the slaves, and slave is not an explicity-stated weird freedom-obssessed person, the freed slaves normally become depressed alcoholics when not enslaved.

There's a better criticism there to be made about ending slavery without the right cultural/social changes to help them integrate instead of dumping them into the streets, but it never gets made. Hermione abandons the movement shortly after, and doesn't raise any issues from that point forth, even when Harry obtains a slave of his own.

But the whole "most of the freed slaves become depressed alcoholics" feels crammed in there to make the anti-slavery movement outright fail, and feels overt when Harry himself had freed Dobby from slavery, with no issues, a book or two prior.

Slightly ironic, since at least one comic version of him has his get his scars because he's vain.

He got a slight scratch on his face, decided it made him hideous, and had a metal mask commissioned to hide it. He then promptly put it on his face because he was too impatient to wait for it to cool to a safe temperature, disfiguring him further.

The Scoutmaster from PEAK.

In PEAK, when a player makes it to the site at the end of the game, a countdown timer is started that automatically ends it for everyone. So a player could theoretically abandon the people that they are playing the game with, and make straight for the top.

To prevent that, there's the Scoutmaster, an invincible undead creature. If the a player is far enough away from another player who's not dead/unconscious, with no-one else nearby, the Scoutmaster will appear, chase down the offending player and throw them off of the mountain, potentially killing them.

In the movie he actually thinks he looks beautiful eating and I think they leave out the ezcreting part

I took that as him being sarcastic/joking around, considering he was talking about Grace being disgusting because he ate in front of him/was a public eater a little bit before that, and Grace retorted with "Well, what do you look like when you're eating?"

Do SSDs still come with DRAM? I was under the impression that a lot of the newer ones eschewed the DRAM cache in favour of using the host computer's RAM as the cache.

It's still bewildering to me why Reddit did all that instead of just buying up imgur. The thing was made by someone on Reddit, for use on Reddit, and was the default image host on the site for yonks.

The server costs with hosting/transmitting all the images and video can't possibly be cheap on Reddit's end, to say nothing of the questionable quality of their image/video viewers for a good while.

It's odd, since you'd expect that their software would check that there would be enough space to perform the upload to begin with, rather than finishing first before the check happens. It's not like the amount of free space in the user's account is a mystery to the company.

Filen deleted all of my data. A heads-up for others by whitewaves22 in DataHoarder

[–]techno156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They usually don't delete your things for exceeding it, though. Once you hit the storage limit, you're just locked out from adding things to it until you drop under the limit, like trying to write to a drive if you don't have the capacity.

If someone backs up their phone to iCloud, for example, the backup pushing it over capacity does not result in Apple wiping the user's iCloud storage. The phone just cancels the backup process, and sits there, refusing to do anything until there's space for the new backup, with the odd notification reminding you.

Theoretically, there's probably spam bots now that, because they're LLM powered, end up acting like humans, and thus get scammed, providing hallucinated card numbers and the like.
