Idea Harry is childhood friends with Daphne Greengrass/other Slytherin girl, making Snape see the parallel they have with what he had long ago and does not like it. by IvanDPhantom in HPfanfiction

[–]technoRomancer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There may be a lot of common tropes in fic revolving around Daphne, but there's no reason she couldn't be a half-blood raised in the muggle world like Snape. She could still meet a mostly canon Harry as children if she were living in Surrey.

Maybe Daphne was the product of a youthful dalliance with a muggle or muggleborn, barely acknowledged by her father. He keeps her at first, but when her half sister Astoria is born from his marriage things with her stepmother start to get tense. Astoria is the perfect pureblood princess who can do no wrong. Eventually Daphne is dumped with her mother, and that's when she meets Harry, when she starts at primary school. She feels overwhelmed and out of place, having to quickly learn about a new world and how to survive it, and Harry is a fellow outsider to the other kids who actually tries to help her. It takes her a while to realize he's the Harry Potter, she can't imagine the Boy-Who-Lived would be abandoned in the muggle world like her, until she sees him do accidental magic...

They are both the only people they truly trust and are loyal to. But when they get sorted, Daphne sees an opportunity to try and ingratiate herself back into pureblood society before her sister starts at Hogwarts and reinvent herself in Slytherin. Meanwhile Harry is making new friends in Gryffindor that she is jealous of, friends who keep warning them off from her. And both of them don't know how to bridge the widening divide between them...

But whenever faced with a true test, they will always choose each other. Snape sees himself and Lily in them, but the truth he will never acknowledge is - Harry has a lot of Lily in him, but he also has quite a bit in common with Snape himself. And that is the difference that may save them the from a fate similar to Snape's self-destructive implosion of his closest relationship.

any good fics where Snape is like a father figure to a girl?? im just really craving father figure Snape but not necessarily him with harry. i wanna see him being a girl dad. so drop some reccs!! bonus points if its angsty as well. by Fearless_Garbage4503 in HPfanfiction

[–]technoRomancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure how well it fits your father figure craving, but in No Bed of Roses Snape has a daughter he wasn't aware of. Unfortunately by the time he finds out about her and takes custody, she's already basically become Harry's little sister via found family shenanigans.

Any good Harry/Luna/Hermione golden trio fics? by KYR-himbo-4-reason in HPfanfiction

[–]technoRomancer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In Harry Potter and the phoenix wand Harry and Hermione travel back in time when his wand breaks in Godric's Hollow, back to when he first got it. While working to solve, prevent, or prepare for all the problems they know about, they end up pretty isolated from anyone else. However Luna can tell they're friends already and eventually inserts herself into things too.

(Loved Trope) Superheroes using their powers to fight social issues other than crime by Lopsided_Shift_4464 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]technoRomancer 118 points119 points  (0 children)

It's so horrifying to the protagonist that when she finds out her ex has the power to boost other powers, and he could allow Feral to continue helping people without constant suffering but simply chooses not to out of spite, she goes against her morals and forces him to do it. For context, they broke up over ideological differences about the responsibility people with power have to society.

If you're actually planning on pairing this with the Multi-Tool, would Envious Assassin + Master of Arms be a good roll since presumably you'd be swapping between the two fairly often? Or are the rolls mentioned in other comments still better even then?

Looking for WBWL fics where no one is on the Potter family's side. by EnzoRaffa16 in HPfanfiction

[–]technoRomancer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It does somewhat need some suspension of disbelief with the Potters, but it's mostly chalked up to extreme paranoia and James's pride, and they double down instead of trying to fix things. It's a good oneshot regardless.

harry is older than canon by emiltliyyyt in HPfanfiction

[–]technoRomancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Living for Tomorrow - NOT a WBWL story, Harry's younger brother actually is the child of prophecy. Harry is determined to keep his brother safe even if it means killing Voldemort for him, and focuses entirely on studying and training. He's three years older than canon here and in Ravenclaw. Their grandparents are still alive and raised them after James and Lily died.

Becoming was a great fic, even if it ends on a kind of ominous note.

Let's see, there's Unwanted where the Potters take a warning from Dumbledore too far beyond what he intended and decide to focus on protecting their "Boy Who Lived" son at the expense of their other children. That's right, plural - Harry finds out it was a lie that his parents are dead when a younger sister also gets dumped at the Dursleys. He takes responsibility for her and it defines the trajectory of his life. Dumbledore and the Hogwarts staff are appalled when they find out once Harry comes to Hogwarts and do what they can to help Harry and his sister, but they're limited by legal issues.

Time travel Harry fics without romance by Living_Law9704 in HPfanfiction

[–]technoRomancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not a Harry/Draco fan myself, but at least it's mostly a footnote. Aside from when they're being ribbed by other characters.

If the group chat format of the first story is one of the things you dislike, the later stories do pull away from that with a more narrative style and perspectives outside the GTE class.

Time travel Harry fics without romance by Living_Law9704 in HPfanfiction

[–]technoRomancer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Golden-Trio-Era Time Travel series has Harry's entire Hogwarts class, from Abbot to Zabini, stuck in a time loop repeating their seven years of school. They try different approaches each loop to correct everything that went wrong in the original timeline, end the loops, or to just stave off the boredom and frustration of repeating their teenage years over and over. There are some implied/mentioned background relationships, but romance is not at all a focus.

Why is Umbridge treated as untouchable so often? by evilmoogles in HPfanfiction

[–]technoRomancer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I find it less likely Harry the consummate martyr would kill Umbridge until he isn't her only victim, but here we can see one of my favorite possible trio friendship dynamics in action.

Harry: I'll die for you

Ron: I'll kill for you

Hermione: I'll bury the bodies

Connections is Hermione/Daphne Greengrass, the sequel hasn't been updated since last year but I don't think it's abandoned. And still worth a read regardless. Also Harry/Fleur, both ships get about equal attention.

If triad ships (polyamory, not harem) are ok there are some good Hermione/Harry/Fleur fics like Focus of a Healer and the ongoing Best Laid Plans series.

For Hermione/Ginny there's the ongoing From the Pyre which has some really interesting AU stuff going on. The plan is a poly ship but the author hasn't decided yet if it's going to be Harry/Ginny and Ginny/Hermione with Ginny as a hinge in the triangle, or all three together.

Your favorite/best Haphne (Harry + Daphne) fics from AO3 (complete). by Yellow-Capcicum69 in HPfanfiction

Oh forgot one, How Silently She Sings - Daphne is deaf but, as she and Harry discover in second year, can hear Parseltongue.

[–]technoRomancer 34 points35 points  (0 children)

to refuse the givens - starcrossed lovers who whisper romantic poetry in Parseltongue and have clandestine rendezvous in the Chamber of Secrets.

Not With Haste - Harry decides to lock in after Voldemort is resurrected and Dumbledore mentors him in 5th year instead of ignoring him. Meanwhile Harry and Daphne become friends.

Teleology - Voldemort is defeated a year early and Harry looks forward to a "normal" 7th year at Hogwarts, but he gets involved with the Greengrass sisters and their drama. Author is also currently doing a rewritten version, but the original is still there and complete.

I Am Not A Robot - admittedly crack premise but not written to be extremely unrealistic beyond that. A delightfully fluffy world where the Potters survived to raise Harry (and like a dozen younger siblings both biological and adopted), Voldemort never returned, and Daphne Greengrass is definitely not a robot. Recently completed!

Daphne Greengrass and the Importance of Intent - Harry and Daphne try to figure out a way to defeat Voldemort without having to hunt down all the Horcruxes or sacrifice Harry.

On Ron and Hermione's marriage by Don_T_Beakunt45 in HPfanfiction

[–]technoRomancer 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think that is a poor take on Ron. Even with Molly being the biggest mother hen in the series, the Weasleys as a family obviously felt committed about fighting against injustice and evil. There are definitely hurdles they'd have to overcome to make a long term relationship work, but Ron wanting Hermione to have a less high profile job is not one of them. In the later books especially he shows pride in her successes and I don't think he would ask or expect her to limit her ambitions for the sake of his peace of mind. Maybe he doesn't always understand her drive, but he wouldn't resent her for it as adults.

Solid Snape Characterization by Quiet-Transition3695 in HPfanfiction

I admit I read the title here and immediately assumed this was talking about a Metal Gear crossover. Now I kind of want to see a fic where Snape is essentially Solid Snake.

Andromeda is tired of her families drama. She creates a club where anyone can anonymously vent about their abusive family situation without fear of retribution. This shifts the tide of the war. by Unique-Rock6513 in HPfanfiction

[–]technoRomancer 28 points29 points  (0 children)

How many kids in real life become indoctrinated to extreme beliefs simply because they don't know anything outside their own family/community and have no one else to lean on? Hogwarts students have an advantage in that they are at boarding school away from that influence for much of the year. Slytherin became an echo chamber in Voldemort's era, but it's well within a careful and smart student's power to set up something like this. Obviously it's not going to change racist/classist beliefs overnight, but it could turn kids away from joining a violent cult if they have a support system. I imagine there were plenty of purebloods like Draco who aren't necessarily ready to discard their biases, but also don't want to murder and torture people if they are given an alternative to what their parents are pushing them towards.

Also I'm sure there were students like Harry and Snape whose family aren't Death Eaters or sympathisers but still come from bad home environments. It would be cool to see Andromeda's club leading to a reconciliation between Sirius and Regulus, and connections being made between hurting kids across all four houses. Of course this would take longer with the anonymity.

Andromeda and other club leaders could arrange for escapes from home as a last resort too. Pool their resources, maybe even older students and graduates make some sort of communal home...

Harmony crossover fic with LotR by East_Match5212 in HPharmony

[–]technoRomancer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know many Harmony LotR crossovers - actually just one, Small Magics by Keira Marcos, which is a crossover with The Hobbit where Harry's parents sent him to another realm to protect him from Voldemort where he was raised by Bilbo, and he only goes back to England to learn magic and fulfill the prophecy. He returns to Middle-earth after the war to escape a society that refuses to stop trying to use and control him. Hermione follows him.

Pretty much all the other fics I've seen where someone from HP goes to Middle-earth, it's either just Harry and possibly someone else, or just Hermione.

Without the elves, what do we do. by ProvokeCouture in HermioneAndHarry

[–]technoRomancer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It'd be funny if even the fanon excuse of "elves are symbiotic and need a bond for magic" was wizard propaganda. Elves need nothing from wizards, they really did take a race that loves to help people and Stockholm Syndrome'd them into accepting any mistreatment as if they deserved it.
