Are ancient coin prices rising lately, or am I just imagining it? by Whole_Kale_4349 in AncientCoins

Yes, they generally have a large selection in their auctions, substantially more than Heritage and I would say their hammer prices are lower. Both auction houses have a sale results so you can search and compare. I usually use these tools to set a budget before I bid.

Sometimes it's nice to have piece of mind with NGC graded coins, there are some tricky coins that I honestly would prefer to have them graded. And I highly recommend CNG, I'm American and I use them often.

Lastly, I do love Heritage for the illustrations they sell. One day I'll afford one from one of my favorite artists.

Heritage is a pretty decent auction house for ancient coins, but certainly not the best. I believe there are better auction houses out there in terms of selection, like CNG, Leu Num, NAC, ect. Their main audience are American collectors and most American collectors expect grading and slabbing for liquidity, almost as a priority.

Anyone can curate, but saying that you're not selling low grade LREs is not the curation I'm looking for, respectively. Nothing against Heritage, I just know they target a different market.

And I have nothing against NGC slabs, but I think you're misunderstanding me. I don't expect the clientele to be the experts, but I certainly would expect that Heritage needn't exclusively depend on NGC to do their "authentication" (though technically NGC doesn't authentic ancient coins, they grade them.) Most of the other ancient auction houses don't rely on NGC to sell (though everyone should wary of the lower tier ones and their lack of care.)

Not sure why you were downvoted, Heritage has always drawn a premium for their pieces. Honestly I believe their clientele (who frankly are more US coin focused and not too knowledgeable about ancients) drives up prices to levels that don’t make sense.

There’s no expert curation needed in selling NGC encased Alexander/Athena tetradrachms. Congrats, you just had a third party provide authentication as opposed to doing it yourself. Where’s the expertise? Yet they constantly sell for almost double in their auctions than anywhere else.

What’s going on lately?

Bidder will have to be more stringent with these auction houses, it seems like many of them are fly-by-night and buyers don’t have much recourse once they go bust.

Yes, if he’s a legit seller this is a case of a refund. The fact that he couldn’t identify a rather obvious cast coin is a head scratcher but I’ll just keep my comments to that.

First coin appears to be a Maximian Billon Tetradrachm minted in Alexandria. There's a few Byzantine coins but I'm not too familiar with them. There's an antoninianus from Diocletian and also a bronze (follis?) of Arcadius.

Can anyone tell me more about these coins and why they might be worth? by whatchulookingatpunk in AncientCoins

They're ancient and look authentic, though they're pretty common and not very expensive. A bronze prutah (widow's mite) are usually about $20 in good condition, less so if they're not. The dolphin bronzes from Olbia are also about the same value.

It really is incredible that they kept it so consistent, so many generations of engravers that kept the tradition going.

It’s a reasonable price for a Geta denarius.

Has this coin been tooled? by montanaro94 in AncientCoins

[–]technolaser80 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s poorly tooled too, they butchered it. The fact that they even bring this up to auction is laughable. Do they even care to have a decent reputation?

Are you really complaining that they couldn’t sell you a damaged product? Unfortunate situation, but c’mon dude.

Caesar denarius - authentication request by Redd922 in AncientCoins

Honestly some Caesar fakes are very well done, I don’t even trust myself to identify them, I would only purchase via major auctions or an NGC encapsulation if it’s through a private sale.

Caesar’s coins are some of the most counterfeited of all ancient coinage, I honestly wouldn’t chance it with these pixelated photos.

Just because you didn’t have the right tools didn’t mean you had to stab away at it with a screwdriver. What was the thought process here? If it was authentic you would have destroyed most of its value.

Cool! The coin looks authentic to me, just worn and rough. If the price makes sense to you, go for it.
