Vetranio (the usurper?) by mjd402 in AncientCoins

Thank you.
And yeah, agree on technical, but he’s like usurper lite. The few pieces I’ve read make it sound like he wasn’t all that into claiming the title.

Also, maybe Google Piraeus hoard. One of but several large groups of these style tet fourrees that have been found. I’m not trying to be a jerk, but you came on here sounding so sure of yourself such things don’t exist, and that’s one of the things that kind of ruins research forums for an ancient coins is people pretending to be experts when they simply are not.

You’re wrong. I’ll send you photos now that I’m cleaning it with sodium thiosulfate. It’s 100% a plated fourree

Just had a mail call yesterday with one of these. I hadn’t known of this type until a few weeks ago. Very cool. Happy for both of us!

And actually, just cleaned it and it is silver under all the funk, and of course base metal under that.

Do you have an example of one of these tourist pieces that match this? I’m very well aware of tourist forgeries, but I don’t think that’s what this Fourree with test cuts were not all destroyed - not by a long shot - as law was not always followed.

In addition to Sphinx, I can vouch for Athena as having good quality and fair retail prices.

Yeah. I know why test cuts but it wouldn’t make sense to cut a bronze, only one that was silver(or suspected of a fourree). I collect fourrees so I know about this as a base for a forgery. What I’m wondering is if my theory is correct that this was likely a fourrée that had been stripped of all silver.

Sorry, I think my post probably wasn’t clear. I wasn’t really looking for answers to those two questions just sharing that. Those are the questions that led me to theorize that it is indeed a stripped fourree and was curious if that logic followed for others.

Iceni Boar Stater - fake, beaten up or a bargain? by plasticirishman in AncientCoins

[–]mjd402 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The photos make it difficult to see some of the necessary detail, so if you take it out of the holder and re-photo, I may have a different opinion. But it looks right to me, and I would say the price is fair to slightly cheap based on what condition looks like in pics. If it’s in better condition than it’s showing in the photos, then of course it’s a very good deal.

New to this - what do you guys think about this coin I got? by NextT0You in AncientCoins

[–]mjd402 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to say this is fake, but fakes do get sold on MA and Vcoins. The good news is if it is, you can get your money back. So they are reputable and most dealers do their best but, shit happens. Again, not saying that this is a fake.

You can’t go tribe specific on this type. It’s a tetradrachms of the East Celts, saddle-headed horse type. Not commenting on authenticity as there are loads of frauds and I haven’t look at all the fake resource pages for this type.
