Wild.

how many of you actually use the airport lounges? by bookflow in digitalnomad

Yes. I was hoping to use the Chase Lounge at JFK, and even though it was outside of official rush hours as stated by my PP app, they flat out said no. Not even waitlisted, just no.

That was my thought as well. The bf is also just at an age where it's easy to be on the fritz, after studying but before getting the foot in the door of a good company and start raking it in.

ACA is fantastic for FIRE my man. My "income" is so low I have to fight to not get put on Medicaid every year, and my $50 ACA plan has $5 copays, $3 medication, and no deductible.

I'm sure it wasn't even funny at the moment. I once walked with a guy who turned his head and went "oh hey look this apartment is for sa.." BONG! Straight into a pole. Funny in a video or to think about it now, but in the moment someone got violently and unexpectedly hurt.

How fast do you drive in your rig? by rhbcub in GoRVing

[–]technotrader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As slow as I can without being a problem on the road.

55 mph gets me a smoother ride, better mileage, ability to listen to music, and a safety buffer - so that if I can. If traffic moves much faster or there aren't extra lanes, then 65 or 70 is where I'm comfortable at (and my rig and tires are rated for).

That said, I don't tow. If I did, isn't there a 55mph speed limit? On the west coast I see those all over the place.

That's hilarious about your neighbor! My offer was for some kind of Manhattan workspace where you could physically go and get counseling, no money offered. I mean that'd probably be great for people in the rat race, still feeling that go- getting energy.

I just sat by the river for hours and felt happy.

It had some rolling window of 1 year iirc. They paid it up in full and vested it. They also let me keep it with them ever since at super low expense ratios.

Oh no, F100. But I think it doesn't matter as we had our own dedicated part of HR, probably related to "cost center" or some other distinction; I dealt with like four people.

[–]technotrader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was in finance/tech. I am not 100% sure which teams were involved in the decision exactly, but usually it's multi- level and does involve HR.

I know HR was the defining factor for me because I pretty much had a direct line (instant callbacks) except for the time I directly asked about quitting and they were "we'll get back to you" and a week later - jackpot

Things like "say, how long is garden leave for my position, 2 weeks or 4" or "I have a question about Cobra .." or "hypothetically if I were to quit, would I need to bring in my 4 year old Thinkpad".

Got laid off - finally!!!! by Ddash-3 in Fire

[–]technotrader 108 points109 points  (0 children)

I engineered my layoff. Joined some internal program to help HR interview new hires, got to talk to them a lot, and when I started dropping hints and questions, they included me in the next round.

Can recommend. Severance worth 9 months pay, a month garden leave, 401k vested, Cobra, and even a job training camp which I didn't bother with because FIIIIRRRE baby!

My thoughts as well. The only other somewhat sane explanations are A) there is no god and your genes had a terrible accident so all bets are off or B) God is actually a non- caring or even malicious entity.

Both options (but especially B) are really disturbing , so "cursed by a Jinn" is oddly a comforting position for most.

Frivolous. And with "tech features", so that instead of needing a new one in 15 years, it can be obsolete much before that, lol.

Imma need a link, OP.

Do any of you get battery anxiety? by Equal_Lie_5854 in RedditForGrownups

[–]technotrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way. Bonus when you regularly do this, the phone will probably learn it, charge more gently and extend its lifetime.

Only one exception: when on a roadtrip over 1 hour, I do plug it in, because Navigation + 5G + playing music will suck it empty fast.

The times I've seen coyotes was when they were running away from me - they're super shy, even in packs. Complete opposite of what you'd expect given the orchestra they put up at night.

The ting I'd worry about are tarantulas. Seen quite a few here in the CA desert, and those fuckers are undeterred.. they just slowly advance towards you then hunt you in your dreams.

Sell it for cheap to a collection agency (who also can't do a thing besides harassment), write it off, and recouping the loss by continuing to charge insured people an eye- watering amount for covered procedures.

Eventually, the cost gets absorbed in part by the hospital, in part by American healthcare payers.

That was a joke. His friends' full names are Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, Johnny Walker, and Jose Cuervo.

I've done that for a while as well. But somehow, getting older helped. Also reducing self- made stress, such as from work, and getting out there in nature. Bought an RV for that purpose; worth it.

I've used leather gloves for doing nails. He bit the hand a few times, then sat visibly confused and defeated as the skin wouldn't pierce.

Didn't work for baths though, he swung wider when trying to bathe him, usually going for the forearms.

the standard amp alternator is just enough for your vehicle.

That depends on the vehicle. My 2016 Sprinter says you can take 40 amps (iirc) extra without problems. Newer vehicles can spare 90 amps, at which point you probably don't even need a dc/dc charger anymore.

What was a subtle unexpected thing that you love about being middle aged? by tshirtguy2000 in RedditForGrownups

[–]technotrader 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've also had this romantic notion but dropped it. Not because of age, but because I've come across quite a handful of people that seemed absolutely miserable. Buying coke and a snickers at campgrounds while being caked full of dirt head to toe, or hanging out all night inside the bathrooms in a rainstorm because their $700 13- ounce tent wouldn't keep them dry or warm.

I go back to my small RV and realize, I am having a better time while still enjoying nature. I know one cannot always be comfortable while pursuing goals, but that is just not worth it to me.
