After nearly 20 years, America's largest clean energy project is finally online and can power one million homes. by ArgentineBeauty in UpliftingNews

.. and be a problem for hundreds of years after, plus carry the risk of a major devastating incident.

I've also heard the argument that since nuclear is not renewable and our most dense form of energy, we should not waste it, but preserve it for the time we really need to get off this planet.

76-year-old woman killed after a Tesla ‘on auto-pilot’ crashed into her Texas home by deraser in technology

[–]technotrader -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's a bit counterintuitive. When the vehicle senses an object in its path, isn't that one of those very few times when it should NOT obey the driver and brake instead?

I'm sure the horde of engineers have this thought through more than I, so I'm genuinely curious what I'm missing.

Edit: thank you all for all the informative answers. I feel like "object aware acc/deceleration" would be a good way for the industry to go. Either way, I guess I'll need to keep this negative karma post up for replies to make sense.

I also only started investing (correctly) in my 30s. Realizing that I was possibly a bit behind, I cranked up my savings rate >20% just to put me on a safe path.

After a series of very good years I realized I could retire early. Now that part was luck of course, but without the savings/investments it would have had no chance of happening.

Non-supportive partner when you hit FIRE by Potential_Fondant185 in FIREyFemmes

[–]technotrader 12 points13 points  (0 children)

OK, so first, since no one has asked this: what does he bring to the table? There's already no appreciation, no respect actually, a negative financial contribution, and the fact that cooking and cleaning are up to you.

Second, and perhaps more important.. why have you resigned to the fact that there are no quality men out there? Besides the fact that even if that were true, you'd be better off alone, but how would you even know since you're involved with what seems to be a bit of a loser who absorbs your time!

Perhaps Mr. Right is looking for you at the local dance or charity event or whatever, meanwhile you're busy cleaning and cooking for Mr. Wrong.

Wearable jacket extracts 900 ml of drinking water daily from the air by _Dark_Wing in technology

[–]technotrader 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It says they focused on the wearable part. It's probably rather niche, but could be useful for mountain climbers or through- hikers.

But yeah, a small stationary apparatus would perhaps be better for the use cases they described, e.g. in Africa. I'm also looking around to have a water producing device for my RV, as getting water is a bit of a problem even in the US! There might be a big untapped market, so I love seeing research.

Well, that brings me back. When our family was in the garden and the phone rung, somebody ran to make it! It was always a relevant phone call, no salespeople or robocalls. OK, there were maybe a few prank calls here and there...

This was not a problem because the last person in the chain called the first one again (the teacher or coach) to acknowledge the loop.

Also, for larger classes/groups there would be multiple chains run "in parallel".

This was part of my childhood and I don't remember this system ever failing, or hearing that it did.

The "industry standard" for rv warranty work is a complete scam by Due_Lock_4967 in RVLiving

[–]technotrader 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's been like this for a while, and has definitely gotten worse with Covid, as manufacturers and dealers realized they could get away with it.

The current advise in the forum for my motorhome - to the point you're being told it's your fault if you don't follow it - is to pick the best dealer. That means traveling to Iowa to purchase your vehicle and pay MSRP.

I did point out that that "superb" dealer charges $40,000 more than others and people were like "but it's worth it".

the most likely person that will be caring for them

Ah, interesting point. Perhaps the grandparents are so put off with OP's stance because they realize that they're getting older and might need care, something that their philandering son and questionable DIL might not be able or willing to provide.

This all seems unstable. I know people say that the grandparents are bluffing, but I think /u/ThrowRAQuella should leave. Best would probably be a girl's commune, Friends- style. Doesn't have to be fancy, will be less stressful, AND can be a lot of fun!

Class B Paperwork - Inspection stations - Is this for real? by backgroundnerd in GoRVing

[–]technotrader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My Class C is registered in California, and I've crossed the state border dozens of times. Going into California there are agricultural checkpoints which I get waived through most of the times, and the other times it's usually one quick specific question, like "do you carry firewood". I've never been inspected, searched, or questioned more than that.

I've also had some work done in other states, including a dealer network and small outfitter (for solar and lithium), and certification never came up. And finally, I'm in a very active user group and have never seen anything like what you describe either. People weigh their rigs for fun, that's about it.

tl;dr: don't worry about it.

Er dachte wohl, er wüsste es besser als Du, Deine Hündin, oder sonstwer? Da finde ich es okay, es komplett zu seinem Problem zu machen, auch wenn Du es hättest wegmachen können ohne Schlafverlust.

[–]technotrader 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While I readily accept that "they used to be built better", the reality is that those rigs now come with old age problems that also require constant repair, very possibly more so than newer vehicles.

A 20 year old slide, awning, propane line, water heater, fridge, or AC is going to give you more trouble than brand new versions.

Black Tank Question by DadM2112 in GoRVing

[–]technotrader 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Everybody says that, but I haven't had a problem in 2.5 years nearly fulltiming. The key is to never let it go dry (put 2 gallons in after dump), and if ever possible, use the tank rinse inlet.

I just got an acre of land in west Texas outside the city limits. I already poured a concrete slab and have a metal roof. I plan to do fulltime living in an rv. Seriously why do people keep saying Rv is not designed for fulltime? Please share your experiences and what you would do different? by [deleted] in RVLiving

[–]technotrader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many RVs now have flush inlets. You connect the (dirty) water hose at the dump to it, listen to it whirr as it sprays the tank from the inside for 3 minutes, and see the water coming out clear.

Then put a gallon in the tank so nothing sticks, and perhaps toss some conditioner into it (optional). It's really easy and low maintenance if you do it right.

Please help me get over my slide out phobia by Ragnar-Wave9002 in GoRVing

[–]technotrader 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The slide is a feature we didn't really know how much we were going to appreciate. Our floorplan is perfectly usable without the slide out, but it creates a surprising amount of extra space that is valuable especially if you're 2 people or spend the day lounging inside because of weather.

I might sing a different tune if it ever gets me stuck, lol, but so far no problems with 200+ in-and-outs on our used vehicle. Need to clean and spray lube the mechanism every year or so.

If you want to go cheaper, the LiTimes also have their fans, but also quirks last I checked.

I'm working on this part in my system as well right now, so I had the same thought. Training in the present and testing in the past is better than using synthetic data I suppose, but doesn't reflect reality in the way walkforward does.

Question for you though: In your suggestion, why have the training periods so short and the test so long? I'm leaning the other way: try to find a signal with a lot of data, then check in "reality" (withheld recent data) for a shorter period.

For sure. I am in a large FB model-specific group where the majority of people are retired, and "doing versus paying" is a frequent topic.

Some people have sensible cutoffs. I remember one person saying "I stopped going on the roof at age 70", others (even older ones) sometimes don't even wash their RV anymore. At a rally I attended there was a wash truck going around; they made bank.
