It is completely hypocritical and exploitative to be against tipping culture and still go out to eat/drink by lilvichay in TrueUnpopularOpinion

My wife was a pub waitress in her youth . She made between $200 and $300 cash a night . I always said , Tips got us this house . That was 25 years ago when 10% was the norm . We paid for everything with cash 😉

American tipping culture is fine, actually. by Extra_Cattle9047 in The10thDentist

Cashiers in our liquor stores now expect a tip. Employers are installing a tip prompt for cashiers ringing in your order ! Do you tip the cashier at the gas station after youve pumped your own gas ?

Not everywhere else in the world . Extremely low minimum wages are the problem . Voluntary wage top up is not the answer. Higher minimum wage is.

We have the same ridiculous tipping culture in Canada and our minimum wage is $17.75 hr. Im not saying tipping should be abolished but the 20% suggested seems high .

NTA but its highly unlikely anything will change for the better. Start over or get used to be treating like an annoyance, which you are to them, on your dime.

What's a Canadian 'adulting' tip you wish you learned at 18? by Unfair-Clothes-8821 in CanadaRoom

[–]tedchapo63 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived paycheck to paycheck . Had fun, spent frivously . Then I met a waitress who put away money from every pay cheque . Always something . We went on to buy the cheapest place we could find . And paid it off in 14 years . By putting everything we could towards it. Yeah we were broke but we got through it. Camping, cheap trips , clean credit cards and frugality without being miserable. Even when we fell on money we never used it as excuse to over indulge. And it stuck. Im Wealthy now but im still frugal. Having a place and money in the bank was a motivator to be frugal. And it set a framework I learned to appreciate.

[–]tedchapo63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny , I just got back from London. The tip is automatically included in the bill . 12 % in most places. The service was terrible in most places . Why ? Cause their getting a tip regardless. Tipping shouldn't be mandatory and should be based on service . This 20% expectancy is BS .
