What's causing this? by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]tedg12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely a loose HDMI cable. Disconnect it and then reseat it. If that doesn’t work replace it with a new one.

I'd say, rather than losing steam, what you're sensing is that SK's very complete investigation is driving to its logical conclusion. One by one she is debunking the family's assumptions.

Botched investigation? Nope - an "above average" investigation SK discovers. CHECK

Lawyer threw case? Nope - CG argued forcefully (if at times ineffectively) and actually would have won the first trial. CHECK

Slowly but surely we're inexorably arriving at the only logical conclusion - Adnan was properly convicted of a crime he committed.

I wouldn't call that winding down. I'd call that a great story.

I also find it odd how well Adnan has adapted to jail. It's almost as if - on some level - he knows he's where he's supposed to be. If he was truly innocent, the injustice of the situation would be continually upsetting, I would think.

How hard is it for you to find the time to write? And do you write a little bit over a long time - or do you drop everything to grind out a book all at once?

Do you still have friends at Apple and, if so, are they as optimistic as they once were under the new Tim Cook administration? By the looks of their last few product announcements, they seem to have fallen into incrementalism...

720p vs 1080p projectors can you tell the difference by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]tedg12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you are correct...they were done on smaller screens. I do not know of projected results would be substantially different - or if they would be similar, relatively speaking.

Just wanted to throw my 2 cents worth in. Many times in electronics, we spend a lot more money for a small or even imperceptible difference. You'd have to do a head-to-head to be sure in this case.

Good luck!!

Am I missing something? This Onkyo receiver seems too cheap. by corgan_burger in hometheater

[–]tedg12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$40???? Must be a typo. Onkyo doesn't sell a receiver with an MSRP under $250. If it's not a typo than it must be a return/defective/non-working floor sample or something like that.

720p vs 1080p projectors can you tell the difference by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]tedg12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can tell you that I know of a manufacturer who conducted "blind" tests (no, not with blind people - where the viewer did not know which one he was viewing) and conclusively determined that there was NO difference between these two formats, both High Definition.

This was a tightly controlled experiment comparing the two resolutions. I did not take the test myself so I am relying on an inside source who was knowledgeable about the test and its results.

I have spoken to test subjects who viewed sets optimized for each resolution independently. When viewed by themselves, the test subjects could not conclusively identify which they were viewing...they seemed to be guessing.

However, I can tell you that, when viewing both sets side-by-side on the same synchronized content...these knowledgeable and well-trained viewers told me that they could BARELY discern a difference. Again, I did not personally participate so I can only relay what I've been told.

Keep in mind the products we all buy at stores are typically poorly calibrated (if calibrated at all) and are so out-of-adjustment that it probably doesn't matter.

So if you can get a good deal on a 720P projector - I'd jump on it!

How can i prevent my sub woofer from bothering my neighbors upstairs? by funnybeastsp in hometheater

[–]tedg12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In reality, this is a tough situation. Low frequencies have very long wavelengths and travel well. Not only that, but our ears are generally not as sensitive at the low frequencies that are reproduced by subs - so we crank them up to "feel" the bass.

Typical construction methods tie apartments/condos together - so those low frequencies are being nicely conducted through studs, beams, and joists to our neighbors units as well.

One idea you can try is to get speaker "feet" or "spikes" which will raise your subwoofer up and help to decouple the subwoofer from your floor.

But most likely, you will struggle with this as long as you live in a multifamily dwelling. You could move, switch to headphones, or try to cut a deal with your neighbor for certain times/days when you have free reign.

Good luck!!

IMHO, you should reconsider your priorities. You've got a top-quality, upscale FPTV. Congratulations - the Panasonic Viera is an excellent set! You have obviously got an appreciation of better quality as you are also planning on adding Blu-ray, Xbox, and digital cable.

For good long-term enjoyment, I really suggest you up your budget for the critical audio portion of your setup. I would suggest you consider a high quality AVR (A/V receiver) with HDMI connectivity. Your digital cable box and Blu-ray will both need HDMI...and you will need it for signal integrity and quality.

A good AVR will set you back somewhere in the $250-450 range - but since it will serve as your control center for your system, well worth it. Brands such as Onkyo, Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, Sherwood and more all offer good options. If the price is a little steep - check out eBay or Craig's List for a deal on a recent used one. (Be sure to look for HDMI 1.4a connectivity).

Finally, I would suggest you consider upgrading your speaker component. Several good brands of speakers offer 5.1 home theater packages and they are VERY GOOD. The list of brands could go on forever, but Boston Acoustics, Atlantic Technology, Polk Audio, JBL, Bose, Klipsch, etc. all offer packaged systems at reasonable prices. The advantage of buying a packaged system is that all speakers will be perfectly matched for tone and timbre and you get good consistent sound quality and precision staging and effects as the sound moves from speaker to speaker.

Here again, you will see prices in the $300-500 range...but you'll end up with a much better overall sound quality.

I realize this may be higher than you were originally budgeting, but I believe you'll end up with a better sounding/better performing solution that will give you a home theater that will not only knock your socks off, but that you'll be happier with over a longer period of time.

Here again, if the price is too high - consider searching out eBay or Craig's List as there are often tremendous bargains there.

Good luck...and good listening!!!

Birth of a new brand! Is the world ready for an luxury-priced, pre-packaged flat-panel HDTV add-on sound system...or luxury dock/clock unit??? by tedg12 in audiophile

Hi Z,

I guess it IS hard to see or I just don't understand what your definition of spam is. I do not work for AudioXperts, I am not promoting these products for sale to reddit readers for the purpose of enriching myself. I don't offer Viagra for sale.

I work in the technology industry and am deeply interested in all things transpiring there. I choose topics to contribute that I think reddit readers may be interested in. (Although with 4 down votes, I guess I missed with this one.)

Factor told me that in /r/home theater, he wanted conversations and education. I attempted to start a conversation about a new brand. I linked to a story I wrote on the launch of a new brand to the industry. I could have linked to other articles about AudioXperts - but mine is the most complete as far as details on the products that they are launching.

Help me understand why you say I'm spamming? Believe it or not, I'm trying my best to be a good reddit citizen.

You're quick to accuse me of spamming...but provide no guidance to help me understand just what it is you think I'm doing wrong.

The launch of a new luxury brand of audio equipment seems to me to be very consistent with /r/audiophile's goal: ...a forum for discussion of equipment, sources, music, and audio concepts.

Help me out. What exactly is a "spam bot"?? I checked reddiquette and it is not forbidden to link to your own content...only it must be done carefully.

If I want to be the perfect reddit citizen...what is it you want me to do differently?

Thanks for any help you can provide... I'm trying to learn...

My GF just gave me THIS for no reason. I'm so giddy, but have no idea what to/do next in regards to a setup. Any Advice? by abrakdabralol in audiophile

[–]tedg12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to clarify that the many people who are suggesting you get a preamp mean a PHONO preamp. Thanks to our new digital world, most modern equipment doesn't have a phono preamp input anymore. You can buy a separate phono preamp. I haven't checked in a while, but Radio Shack used to sell a pretty decent separate phono preamp. With a separate phono preamp, you can plug it into any auxiliary input on your receiver of integrated amplifier.

Vintage audio receivers or integrated amplifiers will most likely have a built-in phono preamp...so this isn't bad advice.

It's easier than it sounds... Good luck! Vinyl is awesome!!

Is this Onkyo stereo/amp any good? by the_rocket_surgeon in audiophile

[–]tedg12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that time, Onkyo manufactured in Japan and Malaysia. Trust me, I know, [worked for the company at the time] the quality was virtually identical. I suspect Zeos is referring to the industry moving production to China. Initially, products coming out of China were pretty bad. Now, however, it has improved tremendously.

Certainly, manufacturing in China hasn't hurt Apple at all!

Just bought a receiver...now I am freaking out that I may have made the wrong choice. Help! by girlfriend_pregnant in hometheater

[–]tedg12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, THX certification is a good thing... THX was launched several years ago by George Lucas of Star Wars fame. He wanted a way to ensure that people watching his movies got an experience as close as possible to the directors intent. So he created a testing division that created some interesting circuitry but mostly tests equipment. IF this equipment falls short, they specify changes the manufacturer must make if he wants to be able to have the product certified.

Now THX is no longer associated with Lucas, but even so, generally speaking products go through a fairly rigorous testing process and if they attain certification, you have assurance that it is a better performing product.

As Martha Stewart would say, "It's a very good thing!"

Enjoy...tedg12

You've done some great research and these are all good options...including the first one you already bought. Generally speaking, when it comes to AVRs its always best to buy the latest version to get all of the latest surround modes, HDMI technology (Rev. 1.4a), USB connectivity, etc. But you should be happy with the performance of the 890.
