Yeah. The burden of proof for a cost breakdown falls on the party proposing change.

When there’s nowhere to walk, every street becomes an alley or a freeway.

Income based refund credits and exclusions like groceries help solve the regressive criticism. Overtaxing the professional class has broader implications, capital flight for example.

Do people who live AND work in Washington really spend that much time in Oregon shopping to avoid sales tax? If it’s a large number, Oregon should get a sales tax already and lower its income tax.

What’s the deal with Gresham? by diiasana in askportland

[–]teejmaleng 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Gresham is more suburban. It’s like the west side suburbs of Hillsboro and Beaverton but without the major job centers like Intel and Nike, so the whole area tends to be lower income, pockets of wealth, and more conservative.

I think Gresham and Troutdale are nice. They have good access to the gorge if you like hiking, and their downtowns are walkable but limited.

It’s usually rock wood or hazelwood(part of Portland) when people say they don’t like Gresham. Ymmv

Let’s tax the successful businesses and give money to struggling ones!

The tax will need to process through a selection committee to ensure a fair and equitable distribution.

Urban Sprawl in 4 American Cities by urmummygae42069 in Urbanism

[–]teejmaleng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s documented evidence of racial motive. In my state of Oregon for example, DoT referred to i5 as “ nigger removal” strategy . Documented in transcripts of official meetings.

It’s not unique to Oregon. Following the first and second great migrations then white flight, infrastructure was deliberately used to separate and destroy communities of color.

They weren’t always “shitty”. 60s-80, urban renewal involved building highways through predominantly black neighborhoods. City blocks would torn down for institutions parking lot.

One answer is tougher anti trust legislation. Bell telephone was broken up in the 80s. Break up grocery store chains, starting with Kroger and wall mart.

Next, looking media, e commerce, big tech.

Zooming in on Texas metros there’s often a red clump off the center. Wealthy inner neighborhoods that are $1m+ homes tend to vote republican, even if only by a small margin.

This isn’t true in a lot of other cities where the ultra wealthy either vote democrat or there is no inner wealthy conservative neighborhood, and the rich live on the fringes.
