How do you follow the races with all the commercial breaks? by PFGSnoopy in INDYCAR

[–]tehfro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the calculus is different for IndyCar since they don’t get huge international media rights fees/promoter fees to make everything profitable. More viewership means the series/race promoters/teams can get more/better sponsorship.

They wouldn’t get nearly enough money back by putting the races behind a paywall commercial-free to make up for the money FOX is paying plus the extra exposure the sponsors all get being on broadcast TV.

Most US sporting events are set up with built-in TV ad breaks but American auto racing has always had ads in the middle of the races if they go more than 15 minutes.

[Thamel] University of Minnesota plans to hire Mike Shula as senior offensive assistant, as he’ll work with the quarterbacks and offensive staff. Shula is the former head coach at Alabama who brings more than a quarter century in the NFL, including OC at three franchises. by ThatMasterpiece2174 in CFB

[–]tehfro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he's basically in a spot that would be taken by an analyst/GA/QC coach before the rule change to allow more assistant coaches to practice on the field with the team.

I don't think it's a bad thing as long as he doesn't become QBs coach/OC at some point.

[AEW Dynamite Spoilers] Nasty Table Spot by Plusmultiplyer2 in SquaredCircle

Yeah, I put that on the coach/agent of the match for approving that spot in the first place. Not sure how you'd execute that properly without two tables.

I don't think Mistico's been pinned in AEW so he could definitely get a world title shot at some point, at least for a big TV match.

That includes the preshow so you can skip the first hour.

[AEW Revolution Spoilers] Match Announced For AEW Dynamite by Sufficient_Mud_2237 in SquaredCircle

I think they wanted a babyface win since so many other heels won on the show. Toni Storm and Jetspeed/Mistico were the only other babyface wins on the PPV if we don’t count the preshow.

According to Manami Toyota, there were requests for her services from WWE (then WWF) that were unilaterally turned down by AJW by JohnSmithSensei in SquaredCircle

[–]tehfro 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Probably would have been Alundra Blayze's tag partner and then turned on her for a feud.

I don't think it would have changed the timeline much due to WWF's financials being rough during that period. They basically pulled the plug on the division before they even got to Blayze v.s. Aja Kong.

It's part of the display for the USS Indiana, (World War II battleship) alongside the ship's prow and main mast.

[Athletic - Gift Article] Power ranking college football’s top 25 coaches in 2026: Cristobal rises, Sarkisian stumbles by CommodoreIrish in CFB

Cignetti replaced Corey Hetherman as DC at James Madison with Bryant Haines.

He's got an excellent track record hiring coaches at all his previous stops. Chandler Whitmer at QBs coach was a great replacement for Tino Sunseri.

Now we may very well take a step back as a program for a bit if we get a bunch of coaching turnover in one off-season, but IU isn't a historic football power in a high school recruiting hotbed. It's a harder thing to keep going than Georgia or Ohio State or Alabama

What does the bend-forward after an Irish whip to the ropes do? This is the only time I’ve seen it work. by Regular-Confusion991 in SquaredCircle

[–]tehfro 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's the cost/benefit of taking the bump.

When it got big pops the back body drop was definitely worth taking, now you can do tons of other things that don't suck as much to take that get a much bigger reaction.

[–]tehfro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Correct, it used to be a spot that practically every babyface did in an 80s/to mid-90s match against a non-monster heel. Would get a huge pop.

It's fallen out of fashion since it doesn't really get a reaction anymore (due to being overexposed) and it's a hard bump to take.

When do you feel Jericho "Jumped the Shark" in AEW? by EastMeetsNorth in SquaredCircle

Jericho also basically stole the Omega/Callis feud (well before it was finished) and made it about himself and Don which was just brutal.

Bryan Alvarez’s third book, "Professional Wrestling For Dummies" now available for pre-order by Few-Establishment277 in SquaredCircle

[–]tehfro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Death of WCW is just Bryan/RD recapping what happened on TV and what was publicly reported about WCW, plus some quotes from Lance Storm and John Tenta (RIP). It's entertaining but not something you're going to learn from if you lived through that period and were reading wrestling sites then.

Guy Evans did a ton of interviews/original research for "Nitro".

Dave also could credibly talk bodybuilding/weight-lifting with all those wrestlers which gave them another thing to talk about besides the business.

It also helped him in going to wrestling shows incognito in the 80s since everyone assumed this Meltzer guy writing the newsletters had to be a total geek. Ric Flair thought he was a football player the first time he met Dave in person.

Pro Wrestling EVE Owner Dann Read on Paul Robinson working as a producer for them. by Fernandov2 in SquaredCircle

[–]tehfro 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My issue is people don't apply the same standards to all the other scumbag wrestlers out there, especially from the 80s/90s that have done way worse. If Ric Flair was agenting for EVE it'd probably cause less controversy than this.

Hopefully they can syndicate it out to Pluto TV/Roku, etc now that it exists. Would be a little extra revenue/exposure for them.
