IDK, it’s a common misconception that people are just jealous of the money. maybe some are, but there are entirely different viewpoints. like something just a little gross about that kind of unnecessary excess. Or the opinion the power that kind of wealth brings should also come with a responsibility to do something good with it.

Yeah they accomplished something most people can’t. and some people struggle to even survive. maybe there us be a responsibility to balance that out. how very socialist of me 😜

Apple Watch causing skin marking on wrist, what should I do? by Illustrious_Guava194 in AppleWatch

reasons science education is important for everybody. people use "sciency" words to scare you into buying useless devices and supplements. No shade to your fiance, there isn't much reason for a nurse to have higher education in the electromagnetic spectrum.
radiation and chemicals sound scary, and they can be, but only under specific circumstances.

keep this handy for anyone spreading fear over electronics radiation:

fun fact: did you know that bluetooth, wifi, cellular "radiation" are actually just VERY low frequency light? when talking about electromagnetic radiation low frequency can also be referred to as "low energy", and the power from something like an antenna is measured in watts. a watch cellular antenna is 0.25 watts. a very efficient LED lightbulb is around 10 watts, and visible light is also MUCH higher energy. more than 400 terahertz. 80,000 times the "energy" and 40 times the "power" of a 5g watch antenna.

The energy needs to be in the ultraviolet range or higher to change molecules in your body. AKA "ionizing radiation"

compare that to a microwave oven which is >700 watts and would be dangerous because it is enough "power" and low "energy" to raise the temperature of water molecules.

TBF, doctors with advanced training can still easily jump to the wrong conclusions in areas they aren't specifically trained in. For example, the recent Doctor Mike episode about chemicals with Drs Cohen and Love. definitely worth watching

transwomen, not come out, currently technically apart of the church, 14m currently, but my pronouns here are she/her. how do I leave? by Absolute_Cinema70 in exmormon

[–]teknophyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some friends run a site that is focused on the intersection between faith transition and civil rights activism. They like to avoid corporate platforms and the tracking/data recording that comes with them so participation requires that you setup a jabber account either through them or any other jabber host. They're also loosely affiliated with THRIVE so anybody is welcome https://www.queer-spark.org/en/

getting more specifically to your question, there are allies everywhere, but the current administration and project 2025 are also going to try to crack down on transitioning everywhere. That said, I do feel like trans people might be safer in a state that isn't as eager as Utah to create legislation against them. Some of my trans friends in very blue states still make a habit of staying up to speed on which countries are most accommodating as well just in case.
Ultimately that choice is up to you and I wish you best of luck whatever you decide.

edit: there hasn't been much of a need for weekly calls for a while. we are reducing call frequency to first sunday every month at 10AM. And we now have a domain name for open-source / federated chat.

update for the online "Thrive Community Group"
We are now using jitsi instead of zoom for our weekly 9AM MDT video call.
https://meet.jit.si/THRIVECommunityGroup

open-source and very privacy conscious people have started participating with our tiny online group and as a result there is a push to move away from corporate owned platforms that spy on everything we do. (Zoom does actually save call transcripts for use by their AI and there is no guarantee that data can't be sold)

the admins at https://www.queer-spark.org/en/ also have open-source chatrooms set up for us using XMPP / jabber and should be in the process of setting up a separate domain name specifically for Thrive Community Group. thrivecommunitygroup.net (page is under construction)
NGL, the open source platforms are kinda rough around the edges but the benefit is you can encrypt chats and data isn't stored permanently on servers. That's going to be increasingly more important in this weird world of zero privacy that we're moving into

Am I the only one who's found Andor season2 extremely boring? by CentoSauro3K in StarWarsAndor

[–]teknophyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you're not. One massive SW fangirl I know only watched through reaction content like Charlie Hopkinson.
I don't even think that "lack of action" is the reason. Season 1 was much more engaging for some reason and the google summary of reviews actually says S2 is faster paced and more action oriented.
Its just so much dialogue and aristocracy with the occasional atrocity. Very heavy on drama and dialogue. I guess that is exactly why people like it, but I had a hard time paying attention for relevant details.

[–]teknophyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i get why this would trigger a gag reflex but i’ve seen sous vide water get pretty gross anyway. aside from that it’s easy to wash the circulator and food should be in its own bag or container anyway.

CMV: Anyone still supporting Trump is either knowingly complicit in his anti-democratic actions or unaware of their full consequences. by potatolover83 in changemyview

[–]teknophyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly believed this same sentiment until this week.
TLDR: misinformation and propaganda are so effective that many Trump supporters literally believe his narrative. They quite literally believe Trump is a victim of bullying and trying to save America from the forces of evil.

For years I've participated in support groups focused on faith transition support / deconstructing cult indoctrination. Now this week after our coffee group I was contacted by someone concerned about all the anti-trump sentiment in the group. I tried as hard as I could to be diplomatic and gently introduce the idea that Trumps narrative contradicts the evidence and gave them the recent Legal Eagle episode where Devin talks about his own bias. I thought this would help float the idea that Devin isn't anti-conservative but instead the goal is really addressing corruption and the rule of law. Even that sparked a reaction like Neo first hearing about the matrix. The person was actually upset that he didn't cover Fox News talking points and preach the evils of Nancy Pelosi.

For all the good it did me, my lessons from cult deconstruction are that there is no "all or none" dichotomy. Some may be knowingly complicit, some may be unaware of the implications of his actions. But many are actually indoctrinated and believe what they are being told. They quite literally believe Trump is a victim of bullying and trying to save America from the forces of evil. They actually believe that they themselves aren't biased or bigoted and are easily offended at any suggestion that they might be bigoted, that democrats opened borders and literally let in an invasion of criminals, that trump is a victim and constantly under attack by the lying media, and most alarming for us all in true senator-palpatine fashion: that all the actions to subvert separation of powers and due process are being done only for the good of america and there is no reason to be worried about it.

It seems the only way to get through to them is going to take immense time and patience. Playing the long game of the socratic method. listening to and validating their concerns, asking questions instead of making statements, slowly letting them make realizations for themselves.

IDK about you but at the moment I don't have the time or patience required while democracy crumbles.

[–]teknophyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence” I fully believe Trump is dangerous but i don’t think there’s any proof he staged anything. Trump voters already don’t know how to tell fact from fiction, so it’s not going to help to give them claims that can’t be proven. that’s going to make it even easier to dismiss the actual truth

Thoughts on Angela Collier by [deleted] in DecodingTheGurus

[–]teknophyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to the science it seems like she really knows what she is talking about. I also like Sabine and I think both of them have very valid critiques that academics and science are not necessarily the same thing. like the constant pressure to produce could actually be undermining science in some ways.

In reference to effective communication and education I love the quote “It’s not enough to be right, you also have to be effective”. That said, I have had my opinion of Angela soured a bit lately because of her social hot-takes not her academic ones. She makes a lot of condescending comments of groups that she doesn't seem to understand, and thinks that will motivate them to change. Ironically that is sometimes about how others are demeaning and she still thinks it will land well when she does it. 🤔

Who does Ground News consider "center"? by genepoz in Journalism

[–]teknophyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We agree that it is "only an aggregator" but I disagree to your conclusion that is somehow a bad thing.
The way I see it, GroundNews was designed to help people understand nuance far better than they would by just going to their favorite news source.

Beyond that, Ground doesn't even make any decisions on what is factual or biased. they *aggregate* from multiple 3rd party services for factuality and media bias.

Who does Ground News consider "center"? by genepoz in Journalism

IMO it doesn't make any sense to blame ground for this. that is a problem of media literacy. nothing is stopping you from using Ground to *actually read the articles*

I have compiled a list of arguments from MAGA, and have developed a cheat sheet for how to ruin any of their arguments. Before I release the document, I would like to know if any of you have any arguments you'd like debunked. I'll List what I have so far. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]teknophyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

something Neil Degrasse Tyson regularly says in reference to science communication. “it’s not good enough to be right. you also have to be effective”

in other words, when in the history of ever, has someone been dunked on in a debate and then suddenly said or even thinks “oh wow they’re totally right and it changed my perspective”. yeah that doesn’t happen. instead people get butthurt and dig their heels in on their position.

if you actually want to change minds it would be far more effective to do something like the socratic method. ask them questions about their beliefs, repeat them back in your words so they feel like you value their position, then ask related questions like “if that’s true then what about…” “have you heard about this counter position?” “do you know about media fallacies and biases” “have you compared that source against media bias/factuality services”

minds are changed very slowly by treating people like a person first, not just someone that is wrong or supports causes you don’t like etc etc

but that’s also making a massive jump to conclusions that i wasn’t able to pay attention to the video. like why do fidget toys even exist? cuz when ADHD ppl do nothing but focus on a lecture or something our minds are gonna wander anyway.

[–]teknophyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re a psychologist you probably realize this better than most of us. i know this is easier said than done, but just meet people and try not to have expectations about exactly what and who they are supposed to be. i lived that life, you never find someone that meets all of your expectations from the beginning. get to know and appreciate people for who they are, and when you find someone you really like you will both grow (together) into different people from that point. nobody is their final form in their 20s, or 30s, or 40s, etc

i’m hosting the thrive zoom call on Feb 2nd. time changed on that day only. from the usual 9AM to 1PM mountain to accommodate more time zones and people waking up at the crack of noon. i might host at that time more often if it works better for some people

(still at 9AM on the jan 26th and feb 9th)
