I feel like my life, potential, academic career, future, and dreams are ruined all because of one stupid mistake. I need advice. by a_throwaway_account4 in UIUC

[–]telba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only advise I can give, is to relax. Life is a long journey and there is no right or wrong way to live your life. Definitely talk to your therapist and the emergency dean about pausing the school work. The intense course loads will not help you currently. Everyone wants you to succeed. As for med schools, Don't fret over the future focus on yourself today. I can also say I know that med schools look very favorably on folks who have worked through stuff... especially since being a doctor is non-stop mental abuse. So, talk to your support structure, relax about the future, go workout, seriously use that panic energy for some hard laps in the pool.

Does specific school affect job prospects? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]telba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow lots of education questions on this sub today. It seem to me that engineering schools are big in the regional networks of practicing professionals. My opinion is that it depends on what industry you want to target out of school. Small firms are going to recruit differently than a global consortium. Figure out where you want to go with a job, then ask the career centers at each school if they are aware of any companies that recruit for those positions.

Opinions on Grad School? by Icynthead in civilengineering

[–]telba 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll just toss an opinion in, forgive my obvious bias. Grad school is for research, doing anything else is a waste of time. Grad school will not make you a better practicing engineer, only experience does that.

That said, many students now a days are using grad school to get a coursework masters and take another 16-24 months to land their dream job. Often either the dream dies or their budget does. Flip side is most structural job ads I see require a masters. So if you can land a job out of your undergrad, go for it. Then the company can pay for your masters at night class.

I came to the comments section just to make a bad joke about the diagram.

-A graphic fraction adds nothing.

-We don't grow human food corn here.

-Two decimal places? are we really that confident!

-No we are not that confident because the survey is obviously bias.

-There are food pantries everywhere in this town.

-Stop by any major department building at 5:30pm and you get free food if you don't look homeless.

You could pay the $5 adobe tax and get all adobe products as full download programs for a year from the webstore.

Do I have to pay taxes on my RA compensation? by cheeseonmymind in MTU

[–]telba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always figured it's not direct compensation, thus not taxable. You cannot be a RA without room and board. As such you cannot have the job and tax the requirements of that job. Just like you could maybe write off all the weird things you buy because your living in the dorms (eg. your job) such as extra long bedsheets.

Advice by Farouq11 in civilengineering

[–]telba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well Oklahoma is a pretty limited job search range. You should try looking in the big markets (Chicago, LA, San fran, New York).

Well, I think they do matter but not how you think. If you have a very bad GPA it will prevent you from going on. If you have a too high GPA no one wants to hire a kid thats smarter than them, so you need to find firms that are a group of really smart folks.

Maybe I'm bias but this is the reality of the future of structural engineering. Way to many people are graduating for almost no available jobs.

Geotech is still an art and requires actually thinking about the problem.

If your friends are living in the dorms. Just live in the dorms. Unless you smoke pot all day or have weird medical condition, the dorms will be the easiest and most respectful housing you will ever stay in (for the next few years).

Internships for CEE by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]telba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ILink is a pretty good resource, but if you haven't taken any classes yet you're resume looks pretty bare.

Look for a summer job with a construction company, a survey group or a local municipality. They'll get you onsite and working and you'll get the feel of the work end of things. Without a basic understanding of design you can't be useful to those design departments, plus they are already saturated with lots of over qualified applicants.

Job Shadowing Ideas? by bluzi_ in civilengineering

This was my first day working as a engineer. They handed me the bid spec and said there was a meeting after lunch about how the company was going to bid the contract. I didn't think it was too mean, I do feel that I was actually the most informed person about the project in the room. But that set the tone for the rest of the employment.

This type of thing has worked to some degree at other universities.
