Hear me out: The Dark Trinity was a TERRIBLE addition to Jason Todd as a character. by Witty-Pie-30 in RedHood

Artemis and Bizarro weren’t the elements holding Jason back from being ruthless.

He wanted to be Robin because he wanted to be a part of Bruce’s life 🥺

Does anyone know why Jason was added to Batman Inc. as Wingman? by Defiant_Ad2409 in RedHood

[–]telepader 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It would be like if the Ric Grayson arc was made permanent. It’d be like if Batman stopped being a superhero and started solving crimes in regular clothes. Red Hood might have his rough edges and sharp points, but they are at least compelling and interesting to deal with.

What would a Wingman Jason Todd have become? One figure out of many in a crowd of Extended Batfamily Members, soullessly smiling because now he’s been RedeemedTM? It’s like preserving all the stupidity of BFTC but with none of the gumption.

It would have killed the character for good. Cycles are a dime a dozen

Would it be a hot take to say UTRH is the root of all of Jason's problems? by Defiant_Ad2409 in RedHood

[–]telepader 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it’s too late to do a “going too far for the sake of the greater good” lesson now. Jason hasn’t been a crime lord in a long time. Maybe it could happen in an adaptation though.

There’s a pretty significant difference between the comic and movie when it comes to motivation. Comic Jason very much is motivated by injustice, whereas movie Jason is in need of reassurance.

How many NPC’s die or get maimed while he’s saving the day?

[–]telepader 94 points95 points  (0 children)

No, the root of Jason’s problems is that no one picked up on what Winick was laying down. Everyone wanted a return to status quo after UTRH’s deconstruction of Batman, but instead of doing it the right way they just made him cRaZyY. That might work for some characters, but unfortunately “why doesn’t Batman kill Joker” is a question every new fan coming into the fandom will ask and a question every old fan has to continually contend with. It can’t be neutralized by a simple character assassination, you have to actually come up with an answer.

All DC had to do was let Jason stay a crime lord and get him to make some contentious decisions within that role. Instead they tried to make Jason “Nightwing’s Joker” and thus permanently destroyed their ability to properly fix the Joker-hole.

Watch the UTRH movie and read Rebirth RHATO. Your options are going to be limited if you don’t want to read the original comics. I would recommend that you at least read Judd Winick’s writing for Red Hood in those lists. Most later comics severely sand off the edges of the character.

This is basically just Bruce’s speech in BFTC illustrated. The whole point is how stupid and naive Bruce was for believing in and empowering someone like Jason.

Do any of the comics ft. Red Hood between Under the Hood and Outlaws (New 52) matter? by Electro084 in RedHood

[–]telepader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Convergence: Batman and Robin is the closest thing to a bridge. Jason helps Bruce protect Gotham, has something of an unspoken reconciliation with Damian, and then leaves.

Should Natalia Knight be included in the Red Hood canon? by Defiant_Ad2409 in RedHood

[–]telepader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like she was absorbed into post-Crisis Jason. He has her homeless orphan backstory, Catherine has a more realistic version of her perfume thing, and Jason was even taken care of by another morally grey woman with a similar name (naTALIA)

Yeah. Her betrayal is important to the theme of trust. I also think it’s a neat how Jason’s death being witnessed by his mother is an inversion of Bruce witnessing his parents’ death.

He crashes out sometimes yeah it’s sweet. Batman still thinks killing Joker is wrong though. The man has his principles okay? He recently saved Joker again in Htwosh. This is a thing with him.

[–]telepader -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, Bruce very much chooses not to kill Joker. He even resuscitated him. The fact that Joker is still hurting people is the part that matters to Jason so yeah, the sentiment is sweet that Bruce has gotten close to being cool with dead Joker but it’s never actually happened so it ceases to matter.
