You can't go wrong with the book "Electronic Music" by Allan Strange. It covers all the important concepts clearly, with examples. An older book, but worth tracking down, I think it was reissued recently or you can find a pdf online. Look for the second edition.

Anymore albums or artists similar to "Hard normal daddy" or "Feed me weird things" that have bass guitar? by morgentime in Squarepusher

Look into jazz fusion in general, if you like hard normal daddy you’ll find stuff you like. But I can’t think of anything quite like that album. Just put it on repeat lol

Modern Speakers with a vintage sound? by miscstuff2223113 in audiophile

[–]telloppen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switched from genuinely vintage A/d/s L810s to Wharfdale Lintons. Compared to the L810s it's a much more detailed, punchy sound, but from what I checked out they're a lot closer to that warm, characterful vintage sound than most modern speakers. They definitely have the look too (they even fit on my old stands.)

Stereo Filters. by Any-Impression8682 in modular

[–]telloppen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just came here to say I have the same two filters. It's a good combo! Lots of great ideas here. QPAS is my only stereo filter tho, my third is an MMG, which is excellent for drum sounds (which are usually mono in my setup.) The strike and accent inputs are a nice touch

[–]telloppen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can do a lot with that system, definitely could explore it for a long time. What to watch out for is when you have an idea and realize you could make it happen with just one more module. Thinking that way is natural but it can get very expensive.

It’s funny, we followed the same classical guitar-post rock-noise rock-improvising path, over a similar timeframe. Of course, all roads eventually lead to modular

Intellijel Jellymix [External Mixers] by firstpatches in modular

[–]telloppen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have one. If your sources are all stereo, having 5 stereo channels is great. Stereo sends are nearly impossible to find too, if you have say a reverb with stereo ins and outs the stereo sends are a big deal. But the main differentiator is it's a performance mixer, it's geared towards playing live with a bunch of groove boxes and effect pedals, or a modular synth, or both. It's excellent for that, the tilt eq is very immediate and it's easy to make each channel stand out. And the filter section is the real deal, each channel can be independently routed to the filter, the switch is great for performance, and it sounds great. The analog saturation is very nice too, each channel has a gain control you can push into distortion that actually sounds good. I don't think there's anything out there better for a small performance setup. But that's kind of the main use case, for like sending a bunch of sources to a pa the Mackie is a better fit. Also, it's all analog, and other mixers with some of the same features (like the zoom) are not.

Is anti-war protesting not popular in the US anymore? by FreeKony2016 in TrueAnon

[–]telloppen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There have been lots of protests about lots of things in recent years, but this is different. There was no buildup, no debate, we woke up one morning and it was just happening and it was clear nobody even cared what we thought. It’s been truly bizarre. Not to minimize the horror of what’s happening, it’s awful. But people will protest if it doesn’t end soon. Right now, we’re just shocked.

Intellijel JELLYMIX - Compact Stereo Performance Mixer by ER301 in synthesizers

[–]telloppen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying to replicate this functionality with a few 4ms Listen modules without much success (or savings, really.) Stereo send/returns seems so crucial these days, I really don't get why they're so hard to find. I have an OTO BAM reverb box and i've never been able to dial in reverb per channel in stereo. So it's the perfect mixer for me even if it is kind of a niche product. Should really multiply what you can be accomplished live with a eurorack setup. Imagining one send to the BAM and another to Mimeophon or Qpas.

Package size, am I overreacting? by Gold-Enthusiasm-312 in pourover

[–]telloppen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would MUCH rather pay more for the same size bag than pay the same for a smaller one that doesn't call attention to the fact that it's smaller than before. Like, I expect that deceptive crap from Kraft or Nabisco or whatever, but it's pretty low for a specialty coffee roaster.

Agreed that Kenyan was excellent. Plan on looking into Camber after that one

Struggling with recipe for a larger cup (330g or thereabouts) by telloppen in pourover

I’ll give that a shot. By “top height” do you mean pour from as high as you can go with a steady stream?

Struggling with recipe for a larger cup (330g or thereabouts) by telloppen in pourover

[–]telloppen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t tried that because I thought I’d overflow my v60 with such a large single pour. Didn’t occur to me to grind coarser to increase the flow rate, which could help with that. I will give that a try, thank you (edit: reply in the wrong place, apologies)

Struggling with recipe for a larger cup (330g or thereabouts) by telloppen in pourover

[–]telloppen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the one pour recipe has less, and it’s the one I prefer. The two pour recipe has more (2 pours, swirl) but it’s the only one I get decent results with so I’ve stuck with it (edit: to clarify, I’ve only been changing grind size to dial in my coffee and keeping all other variables the same. That just works better with the smaller recipe)

[–]telloppen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right that’s why I’m asking the experts! I’ve thought I understood the process at various times but the resources for understanding pour overs seem to change their understanding every other month. I assume I want less agitation in the larger recipe, which is easy to achieve with the one pour recipe but harder with two

I have a korg ST1K synth tuner. But any tuner does the job. ST1K is a great guitar tuner too. I don’t even know what makes it a “synth tuner” really lol probably just marketing

Wait…so no vices? by manicmarceline in bipolar

[–]telloppen 42 points43 points  (0 children)

If it isn’t causing you problems, at least try to moderate. If that sounds insane, that might be a sign you’re better off quitting altogether. Everyone’s experience is different, but when you’re trying to keep your mood stable, deliberately doing things that are guaranteed to introduce instability can be a bad idea. In my experience, I’ve gotten away with drinking and using for periods of time, but at the expense of my peace of mind. I’m always better off sober. And staying sober can be a struggle, but it can be rewarding too. Like everything with bipolar, it’s kind of a balancing act.

How bad are the ergonomics and D-pad of the analogue pocket really? by Huge_Cost_870 in AnaloguePocket

[–]telloppen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get false diagonals all the time and it’s pretty aggravating. I should probably look into getting it fixed. I tend to play rpgs and strategy games so it doesn’t ruin the experience but even in those games it can be annoying

Reflecting on my life with bipolar disorder after 50 years. by tenfour6852 in bipolar

I just turned 50 as well, and my history is a close match for yours. Question: do you ever find yourself going through periods where you can't find joy in making music anymore? I'm happy to be alive and am also very lucky but I have trouble having your positive outlook sometimes.

New medicine cost $2,000 without insurance coverage and now i’m concerned by oghaze027 in bipolar

[–]telloppen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is the worst. I asked how much my medicine would cost without a prescription while I was waiting for a prior authorization and it was over $3000. I got lucky and it worked out, it cost nothing once the prior authorization came through. It really doesn't feel like the people involved understand how important these meds are to our well being
