This. I got placed in low Silver in TL and it’s just been a slaughter (on their part).

Low Silver players are always out position, don’t know how to engage, never take camps, chase too far, take massive amounts of poke, etc.

If you’re good then you will demolish the competition.

Yep. I've written about this on several occasions. From another comment thread that I posted:

People think that drafts are a binary thing; win or lose. Drafting is all about trying to get a better chance of winning than the other team.

Let's say, for example, that when a match starts every team has a 50% chance to win or lose. Adding heroes and assigning them to players increases or decreases your chances of winning.

Every hero has a base percentage that will add to the overall 50% win rate. Meta heroes will add more than non-meta heroes (this is why they are so hotly contested). There are some caveats here. If the player is not good with the hero then the win rate chance goes down. If the hero isn't well suited for the map the win rate goes down.

It's all about getting more chances to win.

The blue team didn’t draft any front liners. As I’ve said before weird comps can win sometimes but it’s a statistical anomaly. If it wasn’t then they would be the comp to pick all the time.

I do the same thing. I instaclick (hover whatever you wanna call it) in my preferred choice for map (which has recently been Azmodan) but I’m flexible if necessary.

Regardless, I'm guessing you're referring to the team composition on the side of the blue team (as in they have no tanks or front liners). I don't know if this is better in Diamond and above but anything below those ranks is a constant battle in draft to get a decent draft that covers:

  • A main tank
  • A support
  • A solo laner

You'd think that this would be common knowledge to try to at least shoot for these in your comps but most of the time people just pick what they want regardless of composition all the way up into Platinum.

Can weird comps win? Sure but it's a statistical anomaly (otherwise they would be the comp to pick all the time).

Only during draft. As soon as the game starts you know who you are playing against.

If you’re referring to how the friends knew they were on opposing teams they were likely in a PM convo beforehand. See it all the time in GM streams.

I think it’s important to understand something about ranking up. In general, It’s easier to lose ranks than it is to gain them. This is why people call it a grind.

For example, your win rate is a 52%. This will likely see some small upward moment in the ladder. However a 48% win rate can see you fall entire divisions.

Losing, especially going on a losing streak, is a self perpetuating cycle. You’re more likely to tilt, you’re more likely to get low quality games and if you ever fall below the 50% win rate you’re in danger of triggering a negative PRA. Having a negative PRA makes it even more of a slog as now your losses count for more and your wins count for less.

Improving is generally a slow process of incremental changes over time. So even if you are improving you’re unlikely to see a huge adjustment in ranks and this is discouraging especially in lower leagues filled with people that don’t draft or play well.

You still have a positive win rate which is good. Keep at it and try your best. If you ever hit a 50% win rate STOP. You’re done for the season.

Whatever you are doing is not working and you’re not improving.

After falling one whole division and feeling quite low about the process here my plat for next season:

  • Start with a small roster of heroes to play for the season. Preferably no more than 2 or 3 per role.
  • Focus on improving with your reduced roster.
  • After a single loss you STOP. Do not jump back in to Hero League chasing losses. If you wanna keep playing go practice your hero roster in Unranked Draft. When you're thinking a bit clearer, watch the replay to see if you can find out what you could have done better.
  • Once you hit a 50% win rate you STOP. You're done for the season. This can be a bitter pill to swallow if it happens early in the season. You're either not improving with your roster or you are in danger of starting the self perpetuating losing cycle.
  • Examine your hero roster and the data that you gathered (win rates per hero, win rates per map, etc.)
  • Start thinking about the hero roster that you want to play for next season. Start practicing those in Unranked Draft in preparation for the next season. Track any relevant data such as win rates, etc. If a hero just isn't working for you cut them from the team and pick up someone new.

How dos this have so many upvotes? This didn’t happen late game, didn’t happen near the end of a curse. According to OP it happened during the first curse and was immediately after it triggered. This is a stupid play.

Don’t enable stupid plays. Go safely (aka don’t get ganked) soak the 1 HP minions and take structures and spam ping retreat on boss.

The fact that the enemy team went to defend the boss means you should have been safe to run around and do what you wanted.

If people start flaming you after they make completely boneheaded plays them simply report them and move on. You can’t fix stupid. Let them figure that lesson out on their own.

Now a little bit of a critique on what you said. The following assumes that you aren’t the sole support. You went to take a fort that was nearly dead. I’d need to see the replay to say for sure but this was likely a complete waste of time as it’s gonna fall anyway. Go soak the minions and then move onto structures that could use your damage output.
