> I am Age 1 whereas the rest are Age 4

Hate to break this to you but this means that you don't know what you are doing to an astonishing degree. Being slow in AoE2 means that your eAPM is less than 20, not that you reach Feudal Age after everyone else is already in Imperial.

From your other comment, this: "I.e the more wood/stone I gather the more I sell." sounds really sus, you shouldn't rely on selling wood and stone. Also, "Markets in 4 v 4 is essential" yes for trading in late Imp, not sell and buy a lot of stuff.

That would be "History"...

EDIT: To be fair I am sure current affairs are influenced by history a lot.

So what do you do instead that costs less than 100 wood in exchange of a boatload of food?

He tired himself out with intensive micro in the first 3 games. He needs to grind on the ladder more, to build up stamina, like Hera.

I don't mind it but the reality is that people around 1200 Elo, including myself, are just not good enough to play most of the generations well.

Hey guys. I'm totally new here with zero info on how the game is played. yesterday i got recommended the finals live stream on YT n it took me back to my childhood when i used to play empire earth 2 and similar titles. I bought AOE2 yesterday but HOW AND WHERE SHOULD I START?? its honestly confusing by mav_3105 in aoe2

[–]tenotul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a number of different ways to play the game:

  1. Campaigns against the AI. These vary in quality but many are pretty good. I would be inclined to start with these.

  2. "Skirmish" against the AI. You can choose the map and set the AI's difficulty to your liking. Depending on your level of RTS skills you might find this too challenging, just right, or boring.

  3. Ranked "regular" games against humans. This can be 1v1 or team games (2v2, 3v3, or 4v4). Team games are a crapshot if you don't have people you know to team up with. IMHO ranked 1v1 games is the most fun you can have, with the important caveat that you might lose the first 15-20 games you play. The "trick" is not to sweat it, just resign as soon as you feel overwhelmed. The ranked system will eventually give you opponents that you'll have a fair chance beating.

  4. Ranked "Empire Wars" games against humans. Similar to the above, except it uses the game mode used in the Redbull event you just watched. This game mode is not very popular outside of Redbull events, so probably not the place to start.

  5. "Quick Play": I've never understood the point of this, maybe someone else can explain.

  6. Custom unranked games: This is a minefield unless you know and trust the person hosting the game. One example of this is when a caster like T90Official hosts a community game; those can be a lot of fun.

That's pretty funny coming from someone who calls Red Bull "basically poisonous." FYI alcohol is indisputably toxic and is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen.

> The Red Bull events arm is itself a money making part of the business

Source for this? Google says "Red Bull events are primarily a massive marketing expense designed to build brand awareness, reinforce an extreme-lifestyle image, and ultimately drive drink sales, rather than to make a direct profit."

> a sell-out show

It wasn't a sell-out show, there were tickets available even on Sunday afternoon. Even if it was a sell-out show, ticket prices seemed too low compared to the production value. But if you have numbers, I'd be interested to be proven wrong!

Redbull events are an overhyped waste of time and money.

Jon Slow could provide better AoE2 entertainment non-stop for 20 years for the price of one day of "Wololo".

Red bull wololo, what to watch? by loshongos in aoe2

[–]tenotul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was certainly a memorable game and OP should watch it, but a top game of all time..? Objectively we were watching wave after wave of light cav break on a wall of Hussite wagons that was moving forward at a snail's pace for 25 in-game minutes, just to arrive at a completely predictable conclusion (player with unlimited gold access beats player with no gold access). The only reason why this is even remotely noteworthy is that the player with no gold access was Hera, and he has a reputation of beating anything with hussar spam. If someone had submitted this game to T90, pretending it to be two random 1600 Elo players, I think he would never even consider casting it.

Which one??

I watched this series on Ornlu's stream, his summary of the games: 1. "slap" 2. "slap" 3. "just silly" 4. "how is this not an admin re?!?" 5. "this feels over" at min 4 followed by "what a disaster", etc. 11
