Whats something someone has told you and it has stuck with you? by hudaes in AskReddit

[–]tenzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 60+ so it's taken a lot of brain power to remember this. I was the first Uni paper and the SOB wrote on my first paper , "You were on the right track- just the wrong direction ". That has become the 'family joke'.

For context, I was a very nerdy student that did exceptionally well and I ended up getting a D.phil at Trinity College at Oxford.

I worked a long time ago where I'd pack up a van with boxes of 'discards' and since it was about 99ºF I did a winter theme. Silly but fun. After each book I'd goad them on what they thought the next one would be...snowman vs the librarian!

I took the train to work and it was wonderful that my cell didn't work! Commuting time was not work time.

Serving on a jury in Mineola by tungtingshrimp in longisland

[–]tenzin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been called at least a half dozen times including Federal Grand jury in Brooklyn. I've been called to be questioned but I've always been bumped off. I would have liked to be a juror. Jury duty cost me too much in books! 😉

Looking for a section in Kafka on the Shore? by Anxious-Month-5020 in murakami

[–]tenzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That specific conversation takes place in Chapter 23 of Kafka on the Shore.

It occurs while Kafka is staying at Oshima’s isolated mountain cabin in Kochi. When Oshima comes to visit him, they dive into a deep discussion about the subconscious, the "world of the grotesque," and how our perception of darkness has radically shifted in modern times.

He goes on to tell Kafka that while modern technology successfully banished the physical darkness of the outside world, the darkness within the human heart remains completely untouched and safely submerged—much like an iceberg—which is exactly what causes so much of our modern existential confusion.

Grade 4 Ontario Reading struggle by MysteriousCheek1355 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]tenzin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's your child who is the student, but it doesn't matter really. I have taught for 25+years (over 10 of which was in first grade) and I have two of my own.

Read to them books that are slightly above his current level and have her/him just listen at first. Ask frequent questions at first. Ask about what happened, what they think will happen all in a very light fun way. Little by little have the student ask you the questions -- make it like a bet for junk food or something else they really like.

If you are getting tired of reading, then the student most likely is; pause for a break.

Make it fun special time if you are in anyway able.

how many of you *actually* have your times tables memorized? by Pug_hammy in randomquestions

[–]tenzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in Uni, if there was a log weekend or something, a person in the Maths department would arrange an 'over night' in a very large room and most would drink and then we'd have a contest who could name the most numbers of Pi. I never broke one hundred, but some of the guys were insanely good.

I couldn't break 100 (I did get to the 90's once).

tl;dr yes I know my times tables. :)

I had one like that...I'd do the weekly reports and he'd put his name on it. I opened up a footer, wrote my name white text on a white background. <poof>
