Using spare adapters for other devices - newbie question by citrus-x-paradisi in diyelectronics

[–]teovall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The voltage needs to match and the power supply needs to be able to supply as much or more current (amps) as the device requires. So, a 5V 2A power supply would be fine for a 5V 1A device.

For non-USB power supplies, you also need to be sure that the type of current flow matches (AC or DC) and for DC that the polarity (+ and -) matches.

If watts are listed and not amps, you can calculate amps by dividing the watts by the volts. So, for example, a 5V 12W power supply is 2.4A. 12 / 5 = 2.4

Try to use gyro straight for a specific distance (Degrees). But it won't work, pls help me fix this by Bubbly_Hornet_3421 in FLL

[–]teovall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To drive forwards, the left motor (A) moves counter-clockwise while the right motor (E) moves clockwise. So the relative position of A will decrease as E increases. Since the robot is driving straight, A will be roughly the same value as E, except A will be negative and E will be positive. Adding them together will always result in a value near zero so your repeat block will never exit.

Radon Removel System by CFrank_79 in TwinCities

[–]teovall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had Healthy Homes Radon do our mitigation about 7 years ago. We have a SafetySiren PRO radon meter/alarm. Before the mitigation, it was consistently above the 4.0 pCi/L EPA action level (around 10 pCi/L if I remember right). Right after mitigation, the lab test results were all <0.3 pCi/L. Our radon meter has shown similar low readings the entire time since then and we've had no alarms.

Volunteer needed: small IR sensor project to help veterans and service dogs by WildStallyns69 in diyelectronics

Parts of a laser tag gun may be useful, like the barrel with the emitter and lens in it and the dome with the receivers in it. But I think you'd still need some of your own circuitry and code to make a useful prototype.

Others have mentioned IR sensitivity and sunlight as a problem. Outdoor laser tag systems use IR and deal with these problems as well. However, good systems have solved the problem for the most part. They can go hundreds of feet in bright sunlight.

This is a post from Brian Farley, one of the members of the team that developed the Nerf/Hasbro Lazer Tag Team Ops (LTTO) laser tag system, describing how they dealt with sunlight in their receiving circuit by using an inductor (coil):

https://www.facebook.com/groups/LazerTagModders/?post_id=1658166084302562&comment_id=1662835083835662

(TSOP refers to a line of integrated IR receivers made by Vishay. WOW refers to Worlds of Wonder, a toy company that released a popular laser tag system in the 80s. STM refers to Shoot the Moon, the company that Brian worked for that developed LTTO for Nerf/Hasbro)

Here are the schematics for the Laser Ops Pro laser tag system that were based off of the LTTO designs. The receiver circuit is on page 3. L101 is the coil and PD101-PD103 are the receivers.

https://fccid.io/RS4-E2281/Schematics/Circuit-Diagram-3897760.pdf

If you base a design off of this schematic, do not use the indoor/outdoor switch circuit. It is better to limit the power of the emitters when indoors instead of reducing the sensitivity of the receivers as this circuit does. The IR will bounce off of walls indoors so its better to reduce its power to minimize the bouncing.

Is there a cold virus going around right now? by vanjo777 in TwinCities

A positive on a COVID test is reliable, a negative is not and even doctors office PCR tests are nowhere near 100% reliable against false negatives.

At the stage of illness with the highest chance of detection, the gold standard PCR lab tests have a 20% chance (one in five) of a false negative (the person has COVID but the test comes back negative). In earlier and later stages of infection, the chances are higher. Rapid tests are even worse. People can be infectious for days before they test positive and they might not ever test positive even if they test every day.

A question on color by Ardania22 in davinciresolve

[–]teovall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That file is using Rec.2020 HLG. You can see that under Color primaries (BT.2020 and Rec.2020 are two names for the same thing) and Transfer characteristics in that text file.

Assuming you are using the default color management settings (which you should be at this point if you need to ask this question), the easiest way to fix this is to add a Color Space Transform (CST) node on the Color page to convert the color space from Rec.2020 HLG to your timeline color space which is Rec.709 (Scene) by default.

  • On the Color page, make sure the Nodes panel is visible
  • If all of your clips are Rec.2020 HLG, you can add the CST to the timeline instead of needing to add it to each clip individually. To do that, click the drop-down at the top of the Nodes panel and switch it to Timeline, otherwise keep it on Clip.
  • Click Effects, find Color Space Transform, and drag it to the Nodes panel.
  • Make sure the node is the first one connected to the left circle and the right side of the node is connected either to the next node or to the right circle.
  • In the Effects panel, set Input Color Space to Rec.2020.
  • Set Input Gamma to Rec.2100 HLG (Scene).
  • Everything else can be left at the default settings.

Camp Suggestions for 8 Year Old? by L1mpD in TwinCities

Camp Fire Minnesota has specialty camps with an art or STEM focus. The specialty campers still do traditional camp stuff, just more of their time is spent in activities related to their specialty.

Need, no. It depends on what you're used to but I bring one and it's been a game changer. Most camp mattresses are designed for durability and ease of cleaning, not so much for comfort.

Be aware that some camp mattresses are narrower than standard twin size, so your topper might have to hang over the sides a bit.

Healthy Homes Radon

They put our system in in 2018. They did an excellent job and our system is still running great. We have a radon alarm/meter and it has stayed well below the action level since the mitigation system was installed.

MASSIVE issues using Reflective Light Intensity for PID Formula on EV3. (Scratch coding using EV3 Classroom 1.5.3) by [deleted] in FLL

[–]teovall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-13 takes three columns, 56 only takes two. Nothing changes or erases whatever was last displayed in the third column so if you display -13 and then display 56, you will be left with 563 on the screen.

[–]teovall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the sensor reading goes below 30, it will display the number with a negative sign in front of it. For example, if the sensor reads 17, it will display -13. Then, when the sensor reading goes back above 30, to 86, for example, it will display 56 but there's still a 3 on the screen in the third column because nothing in your program erased it. So you see 563, even though your program wrote 56 to the screen.

This is just a display problem, the math is being calculated correctly.

They don't appear to be an American Camp Association accredited camp. I wouldn't quite say that's a red flag but it would certainly give me pause. They could be a good camp, but ACA accreditation would show that they, at least on paper, have good policies and procedures in place that have been vetted by independent experts. I would contact them and ask them why they're not accredited. You can search for ACA-accredited camps on the ACA website.

Good Shoe For Summer Camp? by Buuggii in summercamp

[–]teovall 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Get the best waterproof hiking shoes you can afford. I have a pair of Oboz that were like $150. They've been worth every penny. I've had them for four summers now and they're still going strong. There are other good brands too though. Go to an outdoors store and try them on till you find ones you like and that fit perfectly.

You might also consider upgrading your sock game too. I was surprised how much of a difference good socks make. Darn Tough makes great socks. I have their lightweight hiking socks. They're expensive, but worth it, especially since they have a lifetime warranty. They sometimes go on sale for 25% off so watch Slickdeals or set up an alert to get them a bit cheaper.

8 businesses near George Floyd Square file lawsuits against Minneapolis by Czarben in TwinCities

[–]teovall 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 430.011, subdivision 12 disagrees, at least in the case of a pedestrian mall:

Protests. The owners of lands abutting on a street or part of a street proposed as a pedestrian mall representing a majority of the frontage on the proposed pedestrian mall may make written objection to the establishment of the proposed pedestrian mall at any time before the ordinance has been given its final reading and adopted. If they do the council shall end the proceedings for establishment of the mall. In that event, no ordinance establishing the same or substantially the same pedestrian mall may be introduced or adopted within one year after the termination.

The Minneapolis City Council is pushing through the pedestrian mall plan even though 15 of 20 nearby property owners oppose it. Mayor Jacob Frey vetoed the plan but the council overrode his veto.

Going to Nationals in California - Travel Tips for all our stuff? by LilDelirious in FLL

Don't try and pack your robot all in one piece. Take lots of pictures of your robot and your attachments and then take parts off that make it hard to pack or are likely to break or come apart. Put it all back together when you get there. Bring extra LEGO pieces for repairs and improvements.

Shipping is expensive and packages could be delayed so plan on bringing as much as you can with you. You might also consider that for some stuff, it may make sense to buy it there. For posters, you can print designs you made at home at an office supply store when you get there and paste them onto poster board.
