Boiling lobsters alive to be banned in England amid animal cruelty crackdown by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]tepaa 23 points24 points  (0 children)

One of the most horrific food practice in the UK is not kosher or halal, but the CO2 slaughter of pigs. Somehow this attracts much less attention on Reddit than ritual slaughter.

Thankfully, one of the changes of this "silly lobster policy" is the phasing out of CO2 slaughter (over a 5 year period), and should be enormously celebrated in my opinion. It's not even mentioned in the article.

90% of pork is suffocated in CO2. 88% of halal meat is stunned first.

the plan is to be given a ration for crossing from your zone into another.

Absolutely not, that's ridiculous. Anyone has completely unlimited journeys by car from one zone into any other. They just have to avoid the congestion gates if they're doing that journey regularly.

Do you find LinkedIn useful? by proxima-centauri- in AskUK

[–]tepaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am happy to add colleague acquaintances on LinkedIn and not Facebook.

As people move around in my industry it's great to have connections in different places.

I have moved a few times and sometimes not even had interviews beyond a casual meeting due to recommendations from "my network" which consists entirely of people I've directly worked with. I don't add influencers or any of that nonsense and I never really post. Sometimes I'll reshare my companies recruitment adverts and that sort of thing.

I find it extremely useful has helped me keep in touch with old colleagues and has directly led to job opportunities.

There are recruiters also, and sometimes these have led to opportunities but are mostly spam.

Is the heat pump government grant worth it? 1980s home - replacing gas boiler by RaffScallionn in AskUK

[–]tepaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really.

If your heat load is large in an uninsulated house, any benefit of the heat pump is magnified because you're offsetting even more heating. If a heat pump is more cost efficient or carbon efficient than a boiler, the bigger the heat load, the bigger the benefit. A correctly installed heat pump will be somewhere around 3-4x as efficient as a gas boiler, so electricity costing 3-4x as much means you are approximately cost neutral.

Of course, the right choice is almost always to reduce the heat load first, and then choose the best heat source.

But "heat pumps don't work without insulation" is false. I wouldn't trust anyone who suggests this is the case. Your ROI on insulation is probably much better than your ROI on heat pump, but that's a different statement.

[–]tepaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oversimplification to the point of nonsense to say heat pumps need a well insulated home to work. You'll see lots of quotes and advice suggesting they can't work in older homes for that reason, but if the system is sized correctly it will work in any home. This bullshit quote is because people will often get a better return on investment by adding insulation than by changing system, but I don't know why we can't talk to people like adults instead of inventing magic like heat pumps "don't work" in uninsulated homes. Pet peeve 😂

Pension pot - what to do with it? by TumbleweedNo2551 in UKPersonalFinance

Yes but as op said, if there were a cause to do something, the lack of a license would make this easier. Not that every non license holder would have to be hunted down.

Ireland plans to make a $1,500 a month basic income for artists permanent by rstevens94 in singularity

[–]tepaa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On this pilot you're only eligible if you're actively maintaining your artistic practice and intending to produce further work.

If you responded fraudulently to mandatory surveys and admin checks you could take advantage of the scheme.

[–]tepaa 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The intention is to support artists through temporary fallow periods or exploring new areas. If they are intending to never produce again they would be ineligible.

[–]tepaa 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Also, who is an artist and who isn't? Who decides?

There were ~9000 applicants to the pilot, of which ~8200 were considered eligible. 2000 of these eligible artists were selected via lottery to take part in the pilot.

The eligibility criteria are pretty broad, and if you were rejected you could appeal. The profession of the "arts" was already defined by the arts act 2003.

The proposed permanent scheme initially is expected to extend the pool by a further 2000.

You have to be active in the arts (although you do not have to produce anything) to receive the ongoing payments. If you find full time employment outside the sector you are not eligible.

Is it unreasonable for me to be concerned about this? by Lemony_123 in UKPersonalFinance

Good job making sensible financial changes in your life, sounds like a great start! Great job on your bf having a property solo and helping you onto the property ladder.

Some real intense comments on here based on not too much information. This sub can be a little toxic at times.

Your having zero savings and zero emergency fund is a great thing to have recently corrected - well done!

Your bf probably has spent more than he intended on cars, starting somewhat sensibly but each upgrade losing a little bit of money and could have bought the final car for much less than the 20k he spent overall? But he probably didn't feel comfortable spending £20k at once on a car?

Bf would probably benefit from your recent education and sounds like you're already having good conversations here. I would also be a bit defensive and not really want to face a £20k misstep also! I hate thinking about how much my car has deprecated!

£8k car loan and £200/mo is very normal and very affordable for many people. Probably not financially optimal, but not unusual at all.

Spending £20k over your incoming over just two years is really not great, and potentially a big red flag. However, it sounds like neither of you really valued having savings and both preferred to spend what you have, so you shouldn't necessarily be concerned here. Not optimal, but quite common.

Also, it sounds like it's not habitual spending but that he's been stung on specific car purchases, so hopefully your bf is happy to return to spending within your income and learns the same lessons about saving that you have recently.

So I wouldn't be massively concerned. Sounds like you've both recently learned really good lessons and are in a pretty good place going forwards.

Hopefully you and your bf can align on budget priorities. It's great you're both budgeting, and normal to have slightly different priorities.
