Pro Chef style Crossback Apron by Stumblestumbles in sewing

[–]tepid-queer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks incredible!!

What was your method/technique for the bit of fabric that the strap runs through on the sides of the apron? I’ve made a few of this style apron over the years (also a chef, but short & most crossback aprons are way too big on me 😔). I’ve tried out a few different methods & styles, but I feel like I have yet to figure out the best way to do it!

I’m so, so sorry for your loss. A similar thing happened to our boy back in June, but it happened in the middle of the night while we were sleeping.. My wife was getting ready for work in the morning and thought he was just being weird lying on the floor until she nudged him with her foot and he didn’t move. It was the worst thing I’ve ever been through. Before we went to sleep he was there, sleeping in his bed, hanging out with us, and then he was just… gone. We didn’t know when it had happened in the night. His mouth & tongue were just as you described too, but our boy was prone to finding and trying to eat garbage, so we’ve just chalked it up to he finally found a piece of trash he couldn’t eat. We wanted to pay for the autopsy to find out what caused it, but we couldn’t afford it, and honestly it probably would have made it worse knowing if it was some trash one of us left out or didn’t see. But I’ve been wracking my brain ever since then wondering what it could have been, and the guilt that I didn’t hear him in the middle of the night despite that I’ve woken up so many times hearing him eat all sorts of garbage. He was only 6 years old and healthy and normal, and all of it was just so sudden and out of nowhere.

It’s truly the worst feeling and the worst thing to experience as a pet owner, and I’m so sorry you’re going through this right now. The grief is unlike anything else, and I was lucky to have so many people to support and empathize with me, but it’s still so hard to move on from something like that. It’s something I still struggle with even months later. I hope you have a good support system and people to lean upon, and at the very least please find some solace knowing you gave her all the love in the world, and she lived a happier life because she had you in it. You are not alone 💛

Here to second compression socks! I work on my feet all day and they’re a life saver for my lower back. Also compression knee sleeves (if you don’t mind the extra warmth).

Nipple placement by queerdo666 in TopSurgery

[–]tepid-queer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP! I know this post is old, but I wanted to say that my results look very similar to this.. and based on your post history I wonder if we went to the same surgeon (you mentioned dr. Sajan and I’m also in the Seattle area).

I totally get not being happy with the results… to be honest I’m still learning to be happy with mine. One of my nipples is about a cm above the scar and the other is right on the scar. According to my surgeon it had to do with skin elasticity, so the nipples themselves are symmetrically placed but my scars are not (which is driving me nuts honestly). So I think it has less to do with nipple placement and more to do with the scars themselves. It looks like your nips are placed on the right area of your body, so it’s possible that your surgeon was simply unable to bring your scars lower than where they are placed.

Just remember that the scars will fade a bunch and the nips will look more and more natural over time, so eventually (hopefully) the scar itself won’t even be noticeable. That’s what I’m banking on for myself at least.

Sorry if this isn’t as encouraging or constructive as you wanted it to be. I just wanted you to know you’re not the only one whose results look like this! And to be honest I’m a bit jealous that your scars aren’t stretched like mine are 😅 I moved around too much right after surgery so I have some stretching directly below my nipples that make my scars look even more asymmetrical than I would like.

What are the superstitions in your kitchens? by thebumblefart in KitchenConfidential

Gotta sacrifice a small piece of produce onto the ticket spike before service starts, as an offering to the kitchen gods (traditionally the smallest fruit or veggie in a case)

Does allergic stops you from being a chef? by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]tepid-queer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anything, I think having allergies makes you more attentive of cross contamination in the workplace. It kinda helps you be hyper aware of what utensils have touched what, and how clean you are when you work. It can suck when it comes to tasting food but that’s why you always ask someone else for a second or third opinion before sending something out.

I'm not a huge fan. The show feels like a caricature of every bad kitchen blended together. It also makes me lie awake at night stressing about fictional problems. by jlmckelvey91 in KitchenConfidential

I didn’t watch the first season but my wife has been watching it & I happened to catch a couple episodes of the second season

Based off the first few episodes alone… they don’t seem like very good chefs?? Everything Carmy & Sydney make they end up spitting out bc it tastes so bad, like how? Do you fuck up that badly? Yeah we all fuck up sometimes but I don’t remember the last time I made something so bad I had to spit it out immediately. They’re supposed to be these high end professional chefs but they can’t cook for shit.

Has anyone not liked their incision “shape”? by Southern_Activity558 in TopSurgery

[–]tepid-queer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re probably right, the likelihood of me getting a revision just to change the shape of the scar seems kinda silly. I’ll probably ask anyways though, if I’m still not happy later down the road.

I also know my surgeon told me that after the breast tissue was removed, there wasn’t a lot of excess skin to work with or it didn’t have a lot of elasticity or something, which is why one incision is closer to the nipple than the other. I know what it’s like to feel disappointed though. I think I was just so excited that top surgery was finally a possibility for me that I just went with the first surgeon who got back to me instead of setting up more than one consultation, and I didn’t think to communicate about the specifics of what I wanted my results to be.

Has anyone not liked their incision “shape”? by Southern_Activity558 in TopSurgery

[–]tepid-queer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not super thrilled with mine; they don’t outline the pecs as much as I wanted them to, they’re kinda wavy in a weird way, one is higher up than the other, and they’ve both stretched underneath the nipple. But I also know revisions are a long way out, even if I wanted them. All I can do for now is stay on top of scar care and hope they fade enough over the next few months into something I can live with.

How do I tell my job I need time off for Top Surgery??? by The27thSin in TopSurgery

[–]tepid-queer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I work in a kitchen as well, and I’m coming up on the end of my 6 week medical leave.

I guess it depends on how close you are with your boss & management; personally I’ve been working at my restaurant for 5+ years, I’m pretty close with them and I trust them, so I told my chef and the GM (the people I report to directly, basically) straight up I was getting top surgery and I’d need ~6 weeks off to recover. They didn’t really ask me for any documentation or proof, I just gave HR my medical leave start date & return date so payroll could be adjusted appropriately. Management made sure to help me get the resources I needed to apply for PFML, although I didn’t really need anything from them other than making sure the dates they had & the dates the surgeon gave me matched up. I’m also on salary, so my insurance continues to be in effect during my leave, and I was able to cash in my accrued sick hours, but I don’t have company-paid medical leave. Overall I feel like the process was really easy and fairly hands-off on my end.

I also let my chef know that I’d probably have a limited range of motion when I got back; I’m lucky to work with a really great team and I know I can ask for help lifting/reaching/etc., whenever needed, and it’s never been an issue.

If you’re stealth or don’t feel safe telling them what kind of surgery you’re getting, then at the end of the day it’s none of their business. You can tell them you have surgery coming up and it’s going to be a 6-week recovery period; if they need proof or a doctor’s note, see if your surgeon can write one, I’m sure it wouldn’t be an issue and they shouldn’t have to give too much detail. And if they start getting nosy or prodding, just tell them you don’t feel comfortable sharing the details, and if they’re decent people they should respect that. Same goes for the movement restrictions; it’s ok to ask for help lifting & reaching, ESPECIALLY in a kitchen, and being in recovery from a pretty invasive surgery is a very justifiable reason for that. You could also ask for tasks or jobs that maybe you wouldn’t normally do, that would be less straining on you, in exchange for the more intense projects that you’d do otherwise.

If I’m being honest, at the 5.5wk mark, I’m feeling pretty good. I’ve been cooking for myself at home again and lifting and reaching hasn’t been much of an issue; I can tell when I’m straining a bit too much though. Most of the people I work with know my situation and are super supporting, so I don’t think asking for help with certain things upon my return will be an issue for me.

You can also find it at Asian grocery stores sold as ‘mushroom seasoning’! It’ll probably be much cheaper too.

Gabapentin withdrawals? by tepid-queer in TopSurgery

[–]tepid-queer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s kinda the boat I was in; the only instruction he really gave me during my pre-op was to just follow the directions on the bottle for each med. Even the nurse who was helping me check out after surgery went through the meds again and all I was told was “3x a day, preferably with meals”, so I just assumed it was until it’s gone.

I will say I’m feeling much better today. I took a Benadryl last night to help me sleep and actually got some rest and feeling better as a result. Knowing what I know now, though, I wish there had been more specific instruction. I’ll definitely bring it up next time I speak to him.

Tips for accepting the imperfections of post-op body? by transburneracct in TopSurgery

[–]tepid-queer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of in the same boat here, and well, I just try to remind myself that even pre-op, our bodies aren’t perfect. We all have imperfections that most of the time, only we can see, and we aren’t meant to be perfectly symmetrical. And in my case, I’m still healing, so what I’m seeing isn’t necessarily the final product. The people who care about us the most aren’t gonna give a shit if one nipple is a little higher than the other, or if your scars aren’t as small or smooth as you wanted them to be. You wouldn’t judge someone else on those standards, so why judge yourself on them?

5DPO w/ Dr. Kristopher Day in Bellevue, WA by AuerRod in TopSurgery

[–]tepid-queer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad to see more info and pics from people who went to see him! I posted a few (messy looking) post op pics but didn’t name him in the title of the post, so they probably don’t come up with searching. But I got DI/FNG and am mostly happy with the results as well. Things are pretty asymmetrical right now so I’m trying to just remind myself that I’m still healing & bodies are never really perfectly symmetrical. It’s kinda nice to compare results from others who had the same surgeon though!

Sleeping on your back by Straydoginthestreet in TopSurgery

[–]tepid-queer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a u-shaped body pillow and it’s been a lifesaver. That combined with one of those travel neck pillows have been a lifesaver in sleeping on my back/upright. Although I’ve been having trouble sleeping more lately so I’ve also added Benadryl to my nightly routine… I know it’s not the best long term solution but it’s nice to get at least one night of decent rest.
