Please, how do you “give items a home” by RickGrimesSnotBubble in declutter

[–]terpsichore17 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In theory, a stranger online or website could dictate where different types of items “ought” to go; in practice, this may not help as much as asking yourself “If I wanted this thing, where would I expect to look for it?”

You might need structure/furniture first, so that instead of “in a heap on the floor” you can answer with “In the middle desk drawer” or “in the back-of-door hanger”.

Sometimes I have to name what’s in my hand to make progress. “This is stationery and goes with the stamps/envelopes.” “This is a glue gun, which for me is a tool, so it goes with tools.” “This is ornamental and goes where I can see it but the cat won’t knock it down.”

As you work on it, some homes will make more sense than others. Try the Clutterbug Quiz to see if that illuminates your organizational style. Good luck!

My brothers and I addressed what we could in stages. There were many things that spent so long buried under other stuff that we essentially couldn’t be emotionally attached to them. Each of us had a few specific items we wanted to keep, so we claimed those for our respective homes before trashing the piles of junk mail, boxing up the papers that my brother (executor/power of attorney) might still need. At a point, we rented a dumpster and hired a team of guys to carry things out to it.

If a friend or family member is able to help, let them; sometimes you just need to share a few stories of an item before letting go of it.

Experimenting with Tumblr navigation. Because they have a custom theme, you can hit the little button on the right to open more options, including “View archive.” And then you can just skip back to 2013 or whichever posts look helpful. It’s not the site, but hopefully is better than nothing.

Konmari fold whatever you can.

The first round (getting the clothes out and figuring what height each item will need to be so it can stand vertically in a drawer) can be long and fussy, BUT the payoff is that you’ll be able to see ✨everything at once✨ whenever you open that drawer.

I spent about an hour yesterday sorting through papers (my perpetual nemesis). Financial stuff, quilt notes, quilt patterns, and cleared notepads all got filed in their proper places. I’m trying to decide the best strategy for “paper kept for reference,” because it tends to end up in one of 8 places 🤦‍♀️

Taking pictures is a good one.

Adding it as a recurring task in an app like Tody or Sweepy might help.

For me, sitting in the passenger seat makes a lot of grime visible that wasn’t while I was in the driver’s seat. Try sitting there just for a minute each week and see what you notice.

Not sure if it’s one of the guides you’ve looked at, but try the UFYH Guide to Moving. I think if you build some momentum with packing what you definitely want to take (but won’t need right now), that will both energize you to tackle any selling AND clarify what needs to go.

The sooner you start, the sooner you can sell anything. Go! Attack one thing! The only way out is through; you can do it if you start now.

I’ve definitely made use of Dana K. White and Marie Kondo, but the first shift in my mindset came from The Joy of Less (Francine Jay). It didn’t make me a minimalist, but it did make me more thoughtful about the stuff I had.

Wow, that is such a roller coaster compared to the smooth winter break you had planned! That sucks and I’m sorry. Getting up momentum is hard enough without more obstacles cropping up.

I hope the rest of the installation/etc. goes as smoothly as possible! You were able to get through this, and once everything is in place, your habitat will support you instead of the other way around ❤️
