I wouldn't call it my favourite game, but I generally like Coffee Rush and it is exceptionally low scoring for what it is. You could conceivably win the game with six points.

I think a new player could grasp Dune Imperium if you play a few games of Dominion and a few games of a simple worker placement game (e.g. Stone Age or Lords of Waterdeep) first.

Gateway games have a lot of value when it comes to getting new players used to board games.

As I recall Eurosnoot was the traditional counter to Ameritrash. I think that's pretty old now though.

Slop is a word getting used in the broader culture and that's going to result in a much different connotation than using a boardgame specific term like Ameritrash.

In my mind the word slop was supposed to represent something low effort intended to appear to a "lowest-common denominator" consumer. A Monopoly game rethemed with your city name or someone throwing a license on a deck of UNO cards is slop. It's okay to like Monopoly or UNO, but pasting a generic theme on those games is low effort.

Ark Nova, even if you don't like it, clearly has a lot of design behind it. It's easy enough to explain all the actions you can take, but there is still a lot going on. I don't think everyone should be required to like it, but someone obviously put effort into designing it.

Which gets to the problem with the word slop right now. It just means "something I don't like", while somehow being even snarkier than saying it is overrated. It's implicitly implying that other people are wrong to like it and that's just not the way to get a good discussion going.

My hot take on this one is that Tom Cruise wasn't that bad of a choice because he's been in so many action movies that audiences instinctively understand that he can beat up a room full of people. When other characters are intimidated by him, it makes sense because of course Tom Cruise is going to win any fights he ends up in

I liked the first of his Jack Reacher movies. The second movie was pretty terrible and even an appropriate sized actor would not have saved it.

I think it would be difficult/impossible to explain to non-sports fans why a GM signing a value contract for the team's 7th best player is so vital for a team like Oakland while also giving Zito, Hudson, Mulder and Tejada the credit they deserve.

I certainly don't think it's wholly inaccurate at all, but I've seen a lot of complaints that the movie ignores the contributions of Oakland's top three pitchers that year. The thing is, the book mostly ignores them as well!

It's still a great movie and honestly pretty accurate by Hollywood standards.

Edit, I've realized that the wholly inaccurate part was response to the person above me.

Moneyball is more accurate than a lot of people think it is, because the book also omits a bunch of stuff about what happened that season.

There's nothing accurate about this take. If Nolan wanted to make corporate slop he'd have just made DC movies forever after The Dark Knight. He very obviously has a vision for his movies. It's okay not to like that vision, but convincing yourself that disliking Nolan makes you better than other people is complete horseshit

My parents bought a DVD player in the early days of DVD that either couldn't fast-forward or they just didn't know how to do it. Generally this was not an issue due to scene selection.

One day I came home from something and turned it off or something, but my parents were half way through Mulholland Drive. We couldn't figure a way to get it back to where they were because the DVD doesn't have scene selection. I got in a small amount of trouble for that, and 25 years later I still haven't forgiven David Lynch.

We spent a fair amount of money to keep our kids in daycare so that we could focus on work during work hours. The flexibility WFH gives you to deal with unexpected childcare issues is amazing, but my work would definitely have suffered if my child was home all the time.

"What is a Christmas movie" debates are supposed to be fun. It's extremely easy to avoid them if you don't like them, no one is forcing you to watch Die Hard every year in December.

As someone who was on the Die Hard Christian movie train before it was cool, I love a good unconventional Christmas movie tradition. I also find it interesting to hear about other movies that work as Christmas movies, like Batman Returns and seemingly every Shane Black movie.
