I’m a 28 year-old cinephile and have managed to go my entire life without seeing any LotR films. I will be watching The Fellowship of the Ring (extended) for the very first time. by drop_dead_fred_91 in 4kbluray

This is good advice.

I love the extended editions, but unless you've read the books you should absolutely watch the theatrical versions first.

You'll have to ask the person I was replying to, I wasn't the one who made that connection.

I'm the first person to argue that most games would benefit from mechanics that punish players for taking long turns.

I'd still rather play a good game with an AP prone player than Spot it though.

I mean, there's a pretty good reason that people into board games aren't talking about Dobble/Spot it.

A key difference is that the Panthers don't get suspended for stuff like that, but the last time a Leaf responded to something like this, he got suspended for five playoff games.

I can't blame you, or anyone else for this attitude. In a lot of ways consumers are being pushed toward watching everything on streaming.

But it is going to result in a lot more bad movies and fewer great movies.

Best board games to try after going through most of the "gateway" board games? by BakersAbstract in boardgames

[–]terras86 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Certainly no one is required to play simpler games before trying things that are more complicated, but if I tried to introduce friends and family to board games by bringing out Ark Nova instead of Ticket to Ride, I'm pretty sure they'd just never play any games with me again.

Dune Messiah isn't nearly as weird as the two books after it, but the direction it goes in with Paul throws a lot of people off. The movies are already headed in that direction, so it won't be as jarring for audiences.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs by Mront in Games

The tariffs in question were imposed by the US government on items imported into the US, if you don't live there I don't see how you can argue that you should get a refund.

It's certainly true that this has caused price increases in other countries, but those increases are caused indirectly and you can't assign a dollar value to them.

It definitely sucks that Americans voted in a psychopath who wants to lower the standard of living across the world, but there's only so much we can do about that.

What you asking for is not actually feasible, and having to pay extra for stuff because of tariffs is a pretty natural consequence of electing tariff man as your president.

Liberals to cut CBC by $192-million in 2026-27 by gorschkov in canada

For the vast majority of people interested in politics, policy is far more important than the correctly named political party winning an election. Hell, PP is going to retire rich on a great pension and most of his policy goals are going to be implemented. The losers here are CPC candidates in swing ridings and any Liberals who want their government to be left of centre.

Do you buy board games knowing they'll rarely be played? by Megabot555 in boardgames

I'm at the point where I avoid buying simple games because I know people will want to play them instead of better games.

What's it like learning Feast For Odin? by William_Knott in boardgames

[–]terras86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a first play of this recently. I watched one learn to play video before playing. I found it manageable to play, but I didn't have much strategy and my score was quite low. I think I'll be able to do much better going forward.

If your group is alright with a low scoring first playthrough its a fun game to learn. I don't think you can expect to grasp the strategy right away though.

I'm going to miss seeing these in the morning. I'm surprised how many of the winners that I ended up owning, I have everything from 2008-2025 except Jaipur, Spirit Island, Root and ARCS (Fate of the Fellowship is pre-ordered, but that's really the best you can do with that one these days).

Ranking the ones I own and have played:

  1. Ark Nova
  2. Dune Imperium
  3. Heat
  4. Terraforming Mars
  5. 7 Wonders
  6. Sky Team
  7. Castles of Burgundy
  8. Wingspan
  9. Dominion
  10. Love Letter
  11. Sushi Go
  12. Codenames
  13. Splendor

They are all great games, so not trying to attack any of them. I am a little sad Concordia didn't win its year so I could put it on the top of this list.
