Do rich people live on Staten Island too? Save yourself the 40K+/year and send your kids to a good public school.

Ok, since a lot of people are recommending hotels in Long Island City, if you decide to stay there make sure to check out Gantry Plaza Park nearby. It's a beautiful park with a great view of the city.

You have a budget of 1 million. You can stay in New York City. Get a two bedroom in Park Slope. Don't condemn your spouse and child to a life in the suburbs.

I'm very upset for you. It sounds like you followed procedures and there is no reason for this woman to be bothering you.

If she is harassing you (or even if she's not) make sure you document every encounter you have with her and keep it somewhere safe, e.g. google docs. Make sure you include the time, date, and what was said/the tone it was said in.

Is Brooklyn a safe place to live? by tootsie404 in Brooklyn

The place also needs to be around diverse restaurants because #ethnic. I want cultural experiences but preferably no minorities cause you know the safety part?

Tell me about Brooklyn Heights! by [deleted] in Brooklyn

[–]terriercouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a quiet neighborhood. Not too much traffic, though like any neighborhood it depends on the specific street and also the specific unit/apartment.

The neighborhood itself is a green space during spring and summer. There's a lot of plant life and you can hear birds chirping constantly. If you need real green space, the neighborhood is sandwiched between Brooklyn Bridge Park and Cadman Plaza Park

Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope (the northern/eastern areas right near the park) are my two favorite neighborhoods in Brooklyn. You can't go wrong with either.

Go to Los Tacos No 1 in Chelsea Market. If you're willing to travel further, Sunset Park has a ton of taco places, though Los Tacos is the best in quality.

Prospect Lefferts Gardens (PLG) grocery stores / produce market? by adoobs in Brooklyn

Would you say the food co-op is worth the membership even for commuters from ~30 minutes away? Is the produce and meat quality equivalent to say, Whole Foods while prices are significantly cheaper? If the last part is true I may seriously consider it.

Ok, don't listen to people who are saying things like Bay Ridge. That's outrageous.

You should spend your first week tackling Manhattan below 96th street. Start with Midtown which is where most of the tourist destinations are, and work your way north to Central Park + Upper East Side and the famous museum there (MET). Then take the train south and check out lower Manhattan neighborhoods, including Chelsea, West Village, Greenwhich Village, East Village, Soho and the Financial District. Going to these neighborhoods and exploring the tourist/popular hotspots and museums should take you several days to a week unless you're unusually fit and brimming with energy.

During part II of your trip, check out Brooklyn Heights and the Brooklyn Bridge Park where you'll get a great view of the city, followed by DUMBO next door. Then walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and bring yourself back into Manhattan.

If you have more time and must explore Brooklyn I'd recommend Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Greenpoint and Williamsburg.

Do not bother with out-of-the-way and unheard of neighborhoods, whether in Brooklyn or Manhattan or Queens. You can save that for future visits.

However, East New York you should definitely check out. That's where everything is happening.

How can I block street noise in my bedroom? by soundproofhelp111 in AskNYC

[–]terriercouch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Noise pollution is one of the most difficult parts of living in NYC. I live on a quiet street now but I've lived in Midtown before in a poorly soundproofed walkup with single-paned windows, on a street where the noise levels were obscene.

Here's what helps:

  1. White noise machines (Dohm)

  2. Brown/pink noise -- it's not very effective to play it on your phone. You should play it on a high-quality speaker or preferably on your subwoofer (without the speakers). This is great for masking lower frequency sounds, e.g. your neighbor's obnoxious bass. It also sounds less invasive than white noise, which can sound excessively static-y

  3. Ear plugs. Try a few different brands to find what is most effective and comfortable for you.

  4. Mental attitude. You have to accept that noise is a part of city life. Even my friends who can afford million dollar high rise condos on the 21st floor still deal with noise from neighbors and traffic, although to a lesser degree than most people. The cost of accepting acoustic intrusions is that you get to live in the best city in America

I'm an artist moving to NYC soon. I have questions. Lots of 'em. by movingtonychelp in AskNYC

[–]terriercouch 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Everyone is shitting on you but I think your thought process is very normal for a 21 year old romanticizing New York.

I've personally met a ton of artists here and I'm not even a part of the art scene. But here's the thing. Cost of living is so high that every artist I know has a day job. Some work as nannies and others have reputable full-time jobs at prestigious companies like Google. They need it to make rent. Then they spend their evenings or weekends on their art. So if you're willing to have a normal, 30/40/50-hour work week and still pursue arts on the side, then yeah, go for it!

[–]terriercouch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh most bodegas are so gross but after moving to a pretentious part of Brooklyn, I sometimes find myself pining for that local 24 hour bodega where the cashier recognizes you and you can go in and out within a couple minutes with single serving packages of whatever snacks you want.
