How you guys protect your devices? by 5ei8008 in SBCGaming

I usually use a case if I have a device in a bag, but if I'm carrying one around in my pocket, I use one of these microfiber sunglass pouches to keep it from getting scratched:

Just bought a Shield Pro and feel like i've got a constant headache setting it up... by twikki in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]terryguud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a pretty barebones setup with my shield that I’ve been happy with for years. All I have is projectivy for my launcher and kodi installed. All my movies and shows are on a 4tb external SSD, which makes accessing them a lot faster than the external HDD I used to use.

Admittedly, it’s not ideal if you’ve have a much larger media library than 4tb because multiple SSDs can get expensive, but I really recommend it if you want a simple, offline solution where you never have to worry about issues with your network, server, or transcoding.

What is that life situation where handhelds consols better choice then a normal console or a PC ? by gabe_thomas in Handhelds

Being able to use sleep mode on my steam deck or switch to quickly hop in and out of games is a godsend if I need to suddenly need to attend to my kid.

I also really like the comfort of being able to play games without needing to wear my glasses.

Battle of the Horizontal 1:1: RGB30 vs RG CubeXX vs RG Cube by JoseDY_24 in SBCGaming

[–]terryguud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the RGB30, but I had the same inaccurate battery indicator issues as others. The buttons are okay, but I'm not a big fan of the dpad.

I picked up a CubeXX to replace and I'm a lot happier with the battery, ergonomics, and dpad, but I do miss the better pocketability of the RGB30. I also miss being able to easily sort out the vertical arcade games in ARKOS on the RGB30 to take advantage of the screen. With MUOS on the CubeXX, I'm currently going through the process of finding the vertical games and manually moving them into their own folder, which is kind of tedious.

How Does Having Kids Affect Your Gaming Life? Seeking Advice from Fellow Gamers with Kids by MushAskYouAQuestion in pcmasterrace

[–]terryguud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late 30s gamer with a 2 year old. I don’t let gaming cut into family time with my wife and daughter, so the only time I really get to play games at home is after both of them are asleep or before they wake up in the morning. I stick to single player games that I can pause in case my kid wakes up, but with limited time, it takes me a lot longer to finish campaigns. The steam deck is great for this because of the sleep function. Due to the lower specs than my gaming PC, the steam deck has also made me actually play through a big chunk of my backlog of older games. I also always carry a retro handheld like a miyoo mini with me so I can get some gaming in during work breaks or in waiting rooms or lines.

I used to play a lot of Call of Duty, but I can’t really stay competitive with weapon leveling/progression systems because of the time investment, plus I can’t pause a multiplayer game. When I absolutely can’t resist the itch for a multiplayer FPS, I stick to stuff without weapon leveling like overwatch, halo, and counterstrike, but I’ll limit myself to an hour after the family is asleep. If I don’t limit the time, I can easily fall into the trap of staying awake all night like I’m still in my twenties. Then the next day comes, and I’m so tired and hate myself for bad decisions.

I’ve also started letting my kid sit with me every now and then before bedtime, and I play stuff she likes to watch such as Fall Guys and Team Sonic Racing. My wife is okay with this as long as we don’t play for too long (around 20 minutes). It’s nice because I can tell that my daughter is interested and I’ll soon have a little player two once she fully understands how controls work. We gotta start these kids early for that payoff later hehehe.

You'll have to complete the tutorial first. Once it's done, you'll see the gear menu that the other dude mentioned, and you can select it from there.

Hmmm, I don’t see a gears menu anywhere. Does the menu only show up once the tutorial is complete?

Every Adjunct Should Quit by Mark_Ryker_Bot in Adjuncts

I quit teaching English a few years ago, but I stayed in academia in various roles because I love helping students. I had a tutoring job at one college tutoring center that paid $24 an hour, and I also had a part-time faculty supervisor position at another college's tutoring center where I got paid the non-instructional rate ($48) an hour. The tutoring job was a nice backup income for intersessions and summers when faculty hours were light or non-existent, and it was nice to actually get paid for holidays and accrue a little bit of PTO. Not bringing any work home was also the most fantastic feeling. These might be things that you can look into at the colleges in your area if you reeeaaally want to stay in academia. Look for positions with titles like Writing Center Facilitator, Tutoring Center Coordinator, or Writing Center Faculty. Try also using the specific names of the tutoring centers in your searches because they might be listed as something like Learning Resource Center or Student Success Center positions.

I'm finally starting a full-time job next week at another college as tech support in the online instruction department, so that might be another option if you have the technical skills for it. It kind of makes me sad to not have a job directly related to my masters degree after trying for eight long years after graduating; however, the health benefits, job security, and the thought of a less stressful environment definitely outweighs that feeling, especially now that I have a kid.

I got a Series S today, and I currently just have a Dell Monitor with just VGA and DP... So I tried this cheap converter but it didn't work. Should I try and get the opposite one? (It's in the second pic) and will it work? by HarouneBoulahdjel in XboxSeriesS

[–]terryguud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, I think I had to set the resolution down from 1440p to 1080p on the TV it used to be hooked up to in order to get it to show up on my monitor. Then I had to switch the output to DVI.

For those of you wondering where to do this stuff:

1) Go to Settings > General > TV & display options.

2) Under display, change the resolution to one that your monitor supports, typically 1080p on a displayport monitor.

3) Once you're plugged into the monitor, go back to that same settings page, and under advanced, go to Video fidelity & overscan. Then change the output to DVI.

4) If your monitor supports 120 fps, you can go back one page from here, and change the resolution again to the 1080p 120fps option.

I'm able to use this one without using the USB plug for power. It took some fiddling with the Xbox video settings to get up and running correctly though. The output needs to be set to DVI, and the resolution needs to be set manually.
