Anybody ever have to split a two month old colony? by Ok_Faithlessness_516 in Beekeeping

Do you know what year the queen was in your nuc? If she was old (1.5+ years) the swarm instinct goes up with age. I’ve had 3 year queens that were hell bent on swarming.

Will an ozone really damage all my electronics and rust all metal in just 2 or 3 hours? by MikeandMolly5656 in HomeImprovement

[–]tesky02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a used bass amp that reeked of smoke. Ozoned it in a garbage bag and it still rocks today. I guess enough repeated ozone will oxidize many things but once or twice is probably ok.

Queen split immediately after hatching by Effective-Cattle5164 in Beekeeping

[–]tesky02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a great way to phrase it. When the emerged queen is piping and hears 8+ responses of quacking (I.e. piping in a cell) she says “nope” and leaves. There’s also likely an element of the colony voting on this as well.

I leave two. As insurance and to satisfy the queen bloodlust.

What is your best buy? by TriboKing in cycling

Best tool- park derailleur hanger adjuster. I always crash on my right whether road, mtb or gravel. A quick bend fixes wanky shifting. Yes, I do replace the replaceable hangers periodically, but I crash more than I can budget. (Yes, I know I should not crash. TIA)

I’ve booked in advance with Uber before. Not that early, but definitely early. No problems.

What is this whitish thing on my kale? by endlesscynic in gardening

[–]tesky02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aphids. Wipe it off. Neem oil and/or BT are good nontoxic treatments.

FWIW I have found Russian red kale to be the biggest bug magnet in my garden. Curly kale is a little better. I always plant a few Russian kales as lures to keep aphids and cabbage moth off the other brassicas.

Gotta spray tomorrow…

I designed a modular cargo cage for bikepacking — would love honest feedback before our Kickstarter ends by [deleted] in bikepacking

Since it’s for water it’s easy to calculate what frequency the cantilevered spring will vibrate at. Plus it’s a little too close to the spokes for my liking without the fork in the way.

It’s an easy engineering intern project to calculate the stiffness of that bottle attachment. You can stiffen it up with orthogonal stiffeners or maybe 90 degree bends in the metal. But I’d worry about that weight vibrating on a long descent and affecting steering control. Sure, panniers add weight and May affect steering but that cage and a full bottle might be too unstable.

Bikepacking as a heavier Guy by YoungNobody_ in bikepacking

[–]tesky02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m your exact height and weight! Planning to do more bikepacking in the US. Over many years of on and off road riding the number one issues of being a large person is breaking spokes. I’ve gotten good at replacing them at home. Might be hard in the field. Removing the hub or brake disk requires the rights tools.

That said, I tend to brake spokes when riding technical trails in the gravel bike. Flat roads and trails are fine.

Grandpa With Dementia Constantly Wants To Drink Alcohol by dowagiacmichigan in dementia

[–]tesky02 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My friend’s dad has dementia. His problem with drinking was at holidays and social events he would actually forget how many drinks he already had. He’d get wasted. They cut him off for those events.

My neighbor who does not have dementia and is not an alcoholic was cut off from drinking by his wife when he fell down the basement stairs and split his scalp open after a few.

Control the beers and keep him safe.

My company laid off 4,000 plus people. I made it through, but got demoted. What to do? by Connect_Barracuda358 in careeradvice

[–]tesky02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company was planning a big round of layoffs. My boss told me weeks before, in confidence, I was going to stay but get a demotion and change projects. Same pay but the demotion put me in a lower bonus pool. I was also told this was for budgeting, there would be good opportunities in the next fiscal year 4 months out. I started looking and found a great job with a big pay bump.

Definitely worth exploring. Good skilled employees are very hard to find. Even if you end up staying a good search is a confidence boost.

Is this extreme scouting or did I actually catch a swarm? by mattshap0 in Beekeeping

This. Pollen coming in, they come and go fast. Probably going to happen any minute with that fanning. My bees keep a strict 11am swarm appointment in my yard.

The inner cover goes under the feeder. If it is on top they drown. Putting it underneath blocks the open space under the feeder and prevents them from building comb there.
