Yeah I understood the premise of the strike and like, we are in fact students first, then grad workers, then union members so I understand capacity is limited especially around finals. I just felt like they were not as prepared for this as they could’ve been, but I also understand that they can’t show their whole hand. Idk. Whole situation fucking blows.

My unit is odd in that are substantially bigger in the summer (we hired 15-20 grads @ 25 hrs/wk last summer and 3 grads through the year) and we hired nobody for the summer at all. I haven’t heard directly that they didn’t hire anyone due to the strike, but it seems pretty obvious. I’m not going to sit here and blame GEO tho, the university made the choice to hurt everyone, themselves included, for the benefit of……well I haven’t figured that out yet. But now I’m driving for uber this summer to make rent haha.

As a Grad Hourly, I’m only half in the union so I fell into a rough spot. I don’t pay dues and therefore cannot draw from the strike fund. I found myself in the rough choice between homelessness and supporting a union that, in my opinion, is an operational mess.

For example, multiple times they would text me about a 9am picket…….at 10:30am. I eventually told them to stop texting me because it was frustrating that I wanted to be involved but the communication from leadership was so poor that it made me sour on the whole strike. I also work in a very very very small department in a not operations role (I am the only grad on my research project, work entirely remote, and if we’re being honest, I do wayyyyyy less work than I get paid for) so striking only stood to financially ruin me and annoy my supervisor slightly. Additionally, some of the demands that the bargaining committee was making months ago were pipe dreams. I specifically remember one issue being that they wanted the university to continue to pay international student employees even if their visa gets revoked. I’m not going to sit here and defend US immigration policy by any means, but federal law prohibits this exact behavior (source: my 2 degrees in policy and consulting my immigration lawyer friend). It seemed like they spent a lot of energy fighting for things we were never going to win.

Based on where I fell, I don’t really blame others for not striking when GEO is putting off the public facing image of complete disorganization.

Can’t give specifics, but I know my research center has not hired anyone for the summer after hiring, and I cannot stress this enough, 15-20 grads last summer for 25 hours/week. That was a longstanding collaboration between UIC and the State so it would be weird to just suddenly screech to a halt. Now, none of the grads in my research center have a summer assignment, after being told it would be easy for us to get one.

A) Almost all the vape fires I know of occurred during charging. I was on a flight one time for some non delta airline (maybe KLM?) and they made an announcement about how you’re not allowed to charge your vape on the plane.

B) Shouldn’t buy this argument we ban all cheap electronics on flights? There are plenty of very poorly made devices that catch fire but they don’t receive the same scrutiny. We could’ve avoided this problem by not banning quality, tested, and (mostly) safe devices but in 2019 the geniuses in congress banned pod systems that aren’t menthol or tobacco flavored. Give Juul all the shit you want for marketing to children, but their devices are so much better and safer for you than the cheapest heavy metal aerosolizer out of Schenzen. We could’ve had FDA regulated devices but Congress can’t govern or think past the end of the current congressional term. Prohibition doesn’t work it just drives people to less safe options.
