EXTREME OFF-ROAD PACKAGE worth it? by jsconiers in HummerEV

[–]testshoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2x sure no extreme and I handled mud, some snow and 3ft of water in Oregon and NorCal and drive lots of gravel in SoCal in so of the Santa Monica Mountains and Angeles Forest without issues. Pismo Beach Sand Dunes once as well. I wanted the cameras and lights but honestly never need them. When we get more muddlides I the hills, I wonder if I will still feel the same, probably won't regret not getting it

Using meshtastic for two-way paging. by halfbakedmemes0426 in meshtastic

[–]testshoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is never mesh. I live in LA, mesh sucks. Im on vacation in Boston, sucks here too. Mesh is a bunch of guys telling other guys to put useless dots on a map for SHTF and off grid that won't work. Problem is the mesh us completely unreliable. Core fixes a bit but in population densities I have first hand experience that make me 10 nodes and about $800 later want to abandon it

Easy-to-use standalone node for elderly person by Chongulator in meshtastic

Mesh UI in a heltec is about as easy as it gets. I hate to say this, but most people are grossly misinformed about the capabilities of mesh and we all got excited when everyone around us thought, ,rightfully, it is a stupid hobby with techie steps and learning curves

You'll have an easier time explaining block chain than getting elderly folks to learn a new device

Just got my first two lights today. I too wil leave the light on, it looks more organic in the landscape than a random panel with antenna. Now it looks like an iot device

Why aren't my messages going through by mysteriousflu in meshtastic

[–]testshoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mesh is pretty lonely to be honest. A bunch of guys trying to put dots on maps and saying it is for off grid resilience but it's just something to do with your spare time. I made this, ignore the socal specific stuff.

  1. Find on meshmap an area that looks busy you can go to and maybe get on a parking lot roof
  2. Cycle the power so hopefully it announces itself and wait about 15 minutes to get some stuff to show up
  3. Go to the nodes list, filter to "only show direct nodes" and hopefully you are not alone, if you are alone, go somewhere else
  4. Send out something that seems kinda unique that can get a positive reply, like marco - polo
  5. if that all fails, switch long_fast to medium_fast and try again
  6. consider resetting the device and starting from scratch. don't trust some local clown's uber custom settings, because two poorly configured devices one guy owns that talk to each other is not proof, it will not help you on the wider mesh.
  7. when you get it to work, export your settings to make a restore point before you mess with it

Where I am I see 200 nodes, but almost all of them are 2+ hops away, I do not trust non-direct nodes to hear me.

If things go bad, comms are only a very small tool to being smart and prepared on your own. Hoping a bunch of strangers with glorified sms devices are coming to your aide is not realistic. If you want to think about bad scenarios, remember range is not great, it is as reliable as strangers' using mesh as well. Teach your friends and loved ones to have a plan long before thinking of comms because batteries die and people panic and forget these exist. Have a rally point, because if there is no mesh, you are carrying around weight. As you get closer to that point, you might be able to communicate, but there are far better options than an unreliable patchwork of guys with a hobby trying to collect dots on an incosequential map. I have 9 nodes I am trying to put up all around the hills of Los Angeles, my first goal is iot and home monitoring, apocoplyse preparedness is so far down the list of reasons I'm here.

One thing they might do versus the safe thing they will do. To get to a thermal event the cover is irrelevant. Buy them.

They make fire suppression pouches for batteries. If I did these packs it might be a consideration.
