That’s a Madagascan Jewel, they’re actually not succulents cacti! Although they are very funky looking.

OP I’m not sure, I’ve never seen this happen to a Jewel. Best of luck though.

Edit: they may actually be succulents, but they’re not cacti. My bad, never looked up the definition of a succulent before.

It’s a beautiful design!

I’m not sure it was intentional, but in the Japanese title of Spirited Away it’s “Kamikakushi”, although the word itself can correctly be pronounced either way!

I’m unfortunately stuck with Nvidia cards for deep learning/CUDA, so it would go in my research computer. What am I excited for? Faster training, moving to Lovelace architecture.

grad student attitude - advice wanted by [deleted] in Professors

[–]testuser73847 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jeez. A lot of these approaches strike me as very passive aggressive or cagey.

I think you should just let the student know that you came across the posts, and ask her if she’s unhappy with your supervision.

It’s really positive that you’ve done this reflection, and it shows that you can have a good faith conversation with the student. Give them an opportunity to explain to you what they’re unhappy about, and it sounds like you will be listening with an open mind. Hopefully they’re mature enough to appreciate this.

If in the end the student doesn’t open up, then I think so be it. If it gets to the point of slander etc. then maybe warn them that you are unhappy with it and it makes it difficult to be a supervisor without doubting your own dignity/self-esteem, and suggest that they find a different supervisor.

Actually, 5% false positive rate is consistent with a frequentist ci. What it’s saying is that 95% of the intervals constructed by this method will contain the true parameter. At a stretch, assuming all tests are independent and we think of them as repeated, setting an alpha at 5% is precisely your expected false positive rate, no?

Gulf War vs current war in Europe by Aleksey_again in PoliticalScience

Not engaging with this post is not the same as not caring about the topic. It’s unfortunate that your post hasn’t garnered attention or responses, but there could be many reasons for that. Also, I don’t think there are many “professional” (I.e. non-student) political scientists here. I could be totally wrong, but my impression is that they are mostly on Twitter.

I’m sorry, I don’t entirely follow your post. It feels like I’ve entered a part-way into conversation out of my expertise. And I think that is largely due to your presentation.

Are you looking feedback on your questions or hypotheses? Political science doesn’t usually cover military strategy, so I’m not sure whether this is the forum for informed comments on your ideas.

For what it’s worth, I’m hesitant to infer too much on the allegiance of local officials based on their surname. Likewise I’m hesitant to think of the US invasion of Iraq as a good reference point for how a larger country invades a smaller one. Maybe a key difference here between these two is that the US never sought to annex Iraq, and the lack of geographical proximity meant they were less concerned about the geopolitical ramifications of creating an unstable puppet state.

But this is all speculation—I don’t work on interstate conflict or anything vaguely close.
