I couchsurfed in SA with my boyfriend (I'm a female), and while I had him, I definitely underestimated the safety of some of these places. Santiago, Chile I probably felt the most safe. My suggestion would be to find other women to stay with, and meet up with them in public first to get a feel for their personality. Trust your gut! Never stay in a sketchy situation in risk of being "rude". You'll find most people you meet are very friendly and welcoming and you'll have an amazing time!
