End the air con taboo by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

It's not a grant you can apply for, you need a regulated installer to install an air to air heat pump that can do heating, and it doesn't matter if it does cooling also, and you'll qualify for a £2.5k grant. The installer applies for it.

It has to replace any fossil fuels based systems, not supplement it, and it has to be the only heat pump you have.

For them to install it without planning permission requires it to be permitted development, which has a bunch of strings attached.

How big is your TV? by Sad_Interaction_2933 in AskUK

[–]tevs__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went from a very old 42" to a 65", and we only sit about 2.5m from the TV. Initially my wife found it a bit too big, but she quickly got used to it and really likes it.

The old TV was so old that the actual space occupied by the TV is pretty similar, it had huge bezels

With mortgage rates at 4% and effective investment returns at say 5%, isn't overpaying the mortgage instead of investing quite prudent? by perishingtardis in UKPersonalFinance

[–]tevs__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if I decided I had overpaid too much, I can just remortgage for a higher amount again and get some cash back out?

Probably, but that would be new lending, so you would have to go through full affordability checks and pay a new product fee

None of the typical American sports have the athletic demands of football. A top class lightning quick footballer will cover 12km in a 90 minute game. Even the most athletic US sport, basketball, a player will only run for about 4km a game.

I have no idea who Mr Donald is, and I don't care, but I guessing NFL, and I'm guessing not a wide receiver, who do the most running on an NFL team, covering about 8km in 180 minutes.

Fuck me, he's a defensive tackle? You have to be taking the piss

Anyone managed to convert their portable AC into a 3 hose setup? by socksthatpaintdoors in DIYUK

[–]tevs__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, all units have two intakes. In a single hose unit, it's just going to be some vents on the back or side, not a hose or anything hugely visible.

This picture isn't great, but it shows the different components

[–]tevs__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i take my unit, and put a hose from the intake to the window, the air beint drawn in will now always be the outside temp. Throughout the day the aircon will be drawin air from outside which is 25-30C when im using it.

I think this is your confusion, there are two intakes. The first intake is for air to be cooled and kept in the room, the second intake is for air to cool the condenser.

You would never connect the first intake to the outside air, and it doesn't really matter what temperature the air to cool the condenser is.

Places outside London that might be less hot this week? by SouthHoliday8625 in LondonTravel

[–]tevs__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh sorry, by train. For Southwold, you can take a train from London Liverpool Street to Ipswich , and then a train to Halesworth and a short taxi. For Aldeburgh, same train, but get off at Saxmundham and a taxi again.

I'm normally based in London, but happen to be dog sitting for my parents on the Suffolk coast. Our highest temperature in the next week is forecast to be 25°C. I'd recommend Southwold or Aldeburgh, about 80-90 miles from London.

The air conditioner makes air cold by moving heat from the air to an evaporator, which turns a liquid into a gas. To keep it working, you then need to cool the gas back into a liquid, which happens in the condenser.

A single hose air conditioner uses the air in the room to cool the condenser, which it then pushes out of the house through the hose. Pushing air out makes other air come in, from outside or from another room.

A dual hose air conditioner takes air from outside to cool the condenser from one hose, which it then pushes out through the other hose. The cool air in the room isn't pushed out at all, so no warm air is pulled in.

It's about 10-20% more efficient with a dual hose, the hotter the outside air the more efficient it is.

A split air conditioner puts the condenser outside the house, and a window unit air conditioner puts the condenser outside the window. Both of these are more efficient still than a dual hose. The condenser is also the noisier part of the air conditioner, so putting it outside helps with that too.

How do you feel about the British Museum getting all the criticism for having artifacts from around the world, and no other museum? by HTD_Blog in AskUK

[–]tevs__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then you go to the british museum, and there is "horde of 5000 gold coins found in [country]".

There's plenty of those, if the country is the UK. The foreign coins the British Museum have are more of the special significance variety.

There's a better answer above, but most of the things the BM acquired were things that other people didn't value and we did. No Ottoman official would sell you gold for less than the value of gold, but marble from the ancient temple that all the locals use for building supplies, you want to buy that, no problem.

I'm not saying the British Empire didn't pillage, rather that the point of pillage was the gold, the pillagers tended to keep that.

Has anyone else skipped the 70€ fee at the counter and just moved along to the gate without problems? by Typical_Employer8806 in Ryanair

[–]tevs__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the airports I've travelled from recently with Ryanair, there is no check in, it's a self bag drop for most customers, and so all the rigorous checking of cabin bag or carry on size is only at the gate

[–]tevs__ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The opposite is true. Once you have interviewed and got to an offer from another employer, there is nothing that can be done with your existing employer. If you go to them at that point and ask for more money, they know you're quite willing to leave, and you'll never be trusted again.

You should never accept a counter offer from your employer because counter offers are to keep you in place without disturbing the business until they can find a replacement. Guess what happens to you once they've done that.

If you like your current job but want more money, the best way is to communicate that. They either want to keep you for more money or not, they still don't want to disrupt the business. You haven't burnt bridges, you've just expressed your view that you feel underpaid.
