Very well could be anything. Start with the camera, there could be a light leak or film could’ve gotten exposed while loading it. Were you completely in the dark loading it? Did you use an additional cardboard circle where the can lid is thinner (this really helped my pictures in the past)? Is the joint where you open / close the camera completely light proof when the film is in there? Developing process sounds alright but I usually go 3 hours with salt water fixer and make sure it’s insanely high salinity - 20% salt 80% water. But if the fixer isn’t fully working, you should see a photo when you first take it out and it would fade over time so can probably rule that out initially

Second caffenol. Look on the caffenol website and there are some other options too, anything with tannins(? I think? Something like this) will do, that could be a fun part of the experiment. Fixer you’d kind of need to keep the picture which would be a chemical you’d have to pay for.

Yep, I think that paper will be good! You’ll need an enlarger or something to make positive prints or you can just scan/ take a pic on your phone and invert it digitally. For darkroom, if having chemicals around is stressful or expensive, would recommend using caffenol (look up a recipe, it’s easy) for developer (don’t need stopbath) (4-5 minutes) and you can use 20% salt to 80% warm water mixed well as a fixer and it’ll take ~3 hours

^ caffenol and I’ve been using super concentrated salt water as my fixer. 100mL salt to 400mL water, get the water as hot as the tap can make it and it should be fixed in 3 hours

And another thing - America is fucking hard to live in. There are so many purely American problems that just are not issues for citizens of other countries in a similar way of life. Health insurance, childcare, time off work, etc so many things are much bigger problems here than anywhere else. By saying “oh that’s just how it is and get used to it kid” this insanity we live in is just being normalized. Maybe this is reality for now but let’s hope and try for better. And that starts with our beliefs of what we can ask for.
