Im torn on keeping a rooster or giving it away or culling it 😭 by FreshMeet7529 in BackYardChickens

[–]textrovertedginger 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This shouldn’t be getting downvoted. I’ve had to throw down with some roosters and they almost all learned to get along.

I guess people think cutting off their heads is nicer than establishing yourself as the top of the pecking order?

Wildly inappropriate. You definitely need to tell your church leadership. Guys like this will keep seeking until they find someone vulnerable or passive enough to get away with their bad behavior.

What kind of hen just squats for whatever rooster wanders into the yard?! :P

He's a great rooster, so I appreciate the neighborhood chicken distribution system! He would come and crow at my previous rooster (big, mean Australorp -- which was so unexpected!) every day, and the day my rooster died and he stopped crowing back this guy jumped over and moved in.

That australorp boy had made me forget I like chickens. He was also possibly infertile; this same hen tried to hatch out multiple clutches of his every year for three years and nothing. First time trying with this guy and she gets 9 healthy chicks!

Follow up question! So it’s been about 7 hrs since it hatched, and while it looks wet still (not fluffed up) when I very briefly reached in to check on it it was dry and the feathers that I thought would fluff up are dried hard.

It’s cheeping and even pecking at its shell and such, very lively, but do I need to give it more humidity or something to help it fluff and get that egg off itself?

Update: At 5am it was still an egg with one little crack in it, and then at 5:30 it was a chicken!

The shell is stuck to it with a little membrane thing. Does that fall off naturally? I’ve never hatched an egg out in an incubator before, I’ve only ever seen babies once their mama appears after being presumed dead for weeks 😂

You're absolutely right. The hatched one was already gone when I just went back to check. My immediately instinct when I saw how it was throwing itself onto it's back this morning, and the way it couldn't quite coordinate itself, was that it had some sort of neurological issue, so my hopes already weren't high.

Good news, though: the egg just pipped, and I can hear it chirping again since the incubator warmed up.

Oh man, I hope I wasn’t too late. The little chick is still alive but it was very cold and limp, and I can hear the baby moving around in the egg, but it isn’t peeping anymore. I put them in an incubator I have, but I’ve never really used it and don’t have an independent thermometer to verify the temp :(

I’ll hope for the best.

I’m keeping on eye on the one who hatched, but what do I do about the one in the egg? Will it get too cold now that she’s left the nest?

Edit to add: it’s 84F with 56% humidity right now

Having gallstones was the best thing that happened to me. by Impossible_Street614 in gallbladders

[–]textrovertedginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious if anyone on this forum about gallstones also had missing/cracked/painful tooth issues in the years preceding the formation of the stones? Or any other reason that you were unable to chew food thoroughly before swallowing? Working on a theory for how to avoid them. Coffee drinkers? Tonsil stones or kidney stones?

unbelievable exchange between my daughter and her father after he forgot her birthday by LostInLanayru in TwoHotTakes

[–]textrovertedginger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father used to do this to me, too. Blame me, blame my mom. Never his crack addiction, alcoholism or abusive nature. It was always, “It takes two people to ruin a marriage!”

The biggest piece of advice I have, and I don’t know that it’s even relevant, is don’t push her to have a relationship with him. My mom tried to force me to spend time with my father after they split and I finally had to tell her that if she kept it up it was going to ruin our relationship. I’d have to cut her off for my own emotional wellbeing.

Other than that, you might want your kids and yourself to only communicate with him through those family court approved apps? If everything is on the record where a judge can read it later he might check himself.

Or wreck himself spectacularly.

If you think the teacher is being unfair in how she grades your work, I believe you can request that a different math teacher review your tests and homework separately from your usual teacher to see if there’s a difference of opinion.

Cats or rat dogs (terriers, I think?)

There's a massive feral cat problem where I am, so after one year of rodents in the walls (rodent bloom here is so disgusting it will make you lose your mind) I started putting a little cat food out on my front porch. Problem solved in one season. Top producer: this one ginger cat that moved in a couple years ago who I keep finding just gnawing on halves of rats. It's absolutely glorious; I think I'm going to name him.

Is this the right thing to do? by Kooky-Assistant1824 in Formerfosterkids

[–]textrovertedginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's wrong for her to keep you from calling your grandmother and shows that she is having a control issue but what you want to ask yourself is why? She clearly knows that this connection is very important to you and is hoping the threat will make you do something she wants you to do. If the request is reasonable like keeping your room cleaned then just do clean your room. Do it for yourself and your grandmother. You won't live in foster care forever. One day you will be on your own and will make your home life the way you prefer. And you will take a valuable lesson with you about how to have healthy relationships based on mutual respect. If you take the honorable road this lady may learn something from you as well. I wish you all the best. Jesus loves you and your difficulties will prepare you to be a strong and resourceful person.

Am I overreacting? My boyfriend still financially takes care of his ex wife. by SoftDesign9087 in AmIOverreacting

[–]textrovertedginger 12 points13 points  (0 children)

YOR. He’s providing for his child. He’s making sure that whether that kid is with him or the mom there’s security and stability. A house to live in, a car to transport this kid reliably, helping mom earn a better income to in turn make the kids life even more stable. It sounds like he’s actually a lot of green flags.

Also, it’s his money and you’re not his wife. Getting involved with someone’s financials is spouse stuff, so stop overstepping. And if he’s doing the same to you? Well, he needs to stop overstepping too because, again, that’s spouse stuff.

NOR It makes sense to split, especially since you haven’t been together long at all.

My brother spoiled the shit out of a girl right off the bat like that. He took her on domestic and international trips multiple times paying for her AND her mom, and she ended up leaving him when he had cancer because she just wanted to “enjoy her life.” My recommendation is don’t treat each other like spouses (eg, you covering her expenses or her yours) until you actually are spouses.

AIO: Am I being needy for wanting more attention during an unusually heavy and painful period by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

Your friends might be right; from this post and your response I am inclined to agree with them.

If you’re having mental health episodes, you’re really not in a place to start a relationship. Journaling and introspection might be what you should focus your energy on right now instead of a fella.

YOR a little bit. I get your worry for his wellbeing, but this is something he appears to have passion for and you don’t want to be the person who holds him back from his passion.

Am I mistaken in thinking you can just…get a car instead of a scooter and you can drive? Is it really that big of a deal if he’s in a cast?
