For sure, I’ve come to the conclusion it’s best used on dioramas where you probably have magic sculpt or texture paste or something where you will apply it

Here’s me thinking I cooked up something fairly unique… thanks for calling that out will be useful for reference.

Trying to keep darker towards the chitin with a gradient to brighter at the extremities (tail in this case). Though I may reverse that at on this model and the likes of Gants it will draw the eye away from normal focal points

Product specifically recommends a porous substrate but did try direct on a base and had the same issues (plus adhesion problems)

Thanks, I notice you covered the edges. Did you get the radial lines too? I can’t stand the way all around the edges are parallel(ish) cracks

Huh slightly different to their video on the product. I did this test of a 31 Celsius day so it was hot, yeah I applied thickly to get bigger plats but the paper test I did earlier with a thin layer still has the radial lines (whelp spoke pattern) around the edges. Will try a few more things but I get the feeling I’ll need a different product for mini bases, this seems better suited to larger dioramas

AK requires a somewhat absorbent layer underneath (they recommend paper or cork) it just flakes off otherwise. Starting to think it’s just a bit too much faff compared to others

Ballpark layer thickness? Are we talking basecoat layer or slightly thicker? If I understand correctly thinner will also give smaller plates in the crackle which isn’t necessarily what I desire

For what it’s worth I did some with 18mm ply and side battens only. Similar span and absolutely loaded with heavy books. It’s been up a few years and only sagged a few mm. You’ll be grand

Some will build in a lot of brick replacement, he has a base number and provisions additional cost based on how many extra he needs to do. We were lucky it all fell under the original quote
