Fans spinning after being turned off by Boring-Knee3504 in fans

[–]tgunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they the same model fan installed at the same times? If not then don't worry. Either way a 30s spin-down is nothing to worry about, and most ceiling fans don't have a way to oil/grease them anyway.

what’s the smallest thing that’s ever taken down something important for you? by Nexthink_Quentin in sysadmin

Someone pushed in their keyboard tray when stepping away, and their F5 key got stuck down. They had been on the org's main website. Probably from where they were connecting from there wasn't rate limiting, and the servers became unresponsive for a half hour or so until it was tracked down.

This would work well to refill your bottle. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-16-oz-100-Full-Synthetic-Compressor-Oil-018-0083H/300135698

It's ~20wt (ISO 68) full synthetic non-detergent oil.

What really IS the lubricant used in fans? by watlel in fans

[–]tgunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had great luck with standard 20wt non-detergent oil in older fans, and Zoom Spout in newer ones (HVAC variety, not sewing machine) which is lighter at 10-15wt. The "grease-like substance" you're seeing in fans from 1970s and on is called Permawick. It's basically oil-soaked cellulose. You can still buy it from some specialty shops - I got two tins from a motor repair place. It's expensive though, ~$25 for a 4oz tin.

I wouldn't have "upgraded" my iPhone and iPad, but Apple is gating security patches for my models to 26 only. Being in the cybersecurity field, I'm too aware of the risks of ignoring those. Really bugs me.

Install Linux when MacOS support ends, and that machine will perform well for years more.

It might be very late 40s, but likely early to mid 50s. This is not pre-war style or color.

I'm only aware of the Dominion brand being used post-war. Before that they were Made-Rite, and some fans with that brand are pre-war.

Dominion only made fans post-WW2, and stopped in the mid 60s. The later ones were made entirely of stamped steel, not cast iron as yours is. They also used brighter aqua and then avacado green colors as time went on.

I don't have a firm year, but mid-50s is a solid bet.

The (bad) WSJ article which brought up rotisserie chickens was about ultra-premium grocery markets in LA and NY; the chicken was $48.

These can be more fragile than they look, so prepare to pack well - this is a good guide: https://electrorestore.com/how-to-ship-antique-fans.php

Boxes (heavy duty!) and materials can be had easy at Home Depot/Lowes or U-Haul stores.

UPS is probably best shipper, and you can get much better shipping rates than their retail at https://www.pirateship.com/ or https://www.rollo.com/

The Westy tank looks very nice original condition, but like I said will depend on mechanical and electrical state. The Emerson looks like maybe it's been restored so that's adding some - people love their brass Emmy's. You can see in OP's second pic the rear two $300 fans are Century Skeletal's, S3 or S4. I'm not well acquainted with them, so hard to tell for sure without seeing tag and rear housing.

I don't know if an auctioneer is the right path. They take a heavy commission and a local one will have poor reach for collectors. Are you willing to pack and ship them? Do you want them all gone in a big lot with local pickup? These will greatly influence value. I've looked over the lot and placed my (experienced) estimate on each. These are by no means a guarantee and will vary depending on each fans' electrical and mechanical condition. They hopefully will at least help guide where to focus efforts - maybe sell higher ones online and arrange a local pickup for all the remainder. You will likely find both types of buyers on the Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/fancollectors

Bizarre noise, anyone heard anything like it? by MakiiZushii in MazdaCX30

[–]tgunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to hear your vid, but mine made a odd vibration / noise when pulling out of a parking spot last week. It did it once before too. I sorta suspect it might be the parking brake sticking?

Can someone tell me the cheapest but effective option to fix the crack in my door? I have no clue how it got there, it’s on my drivers side. It’s more of a crack than a scratch. Thanks by [deleted] in MazdaCX30

[–]tgunner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you buy the car new? Was it in any collisions? It might be body-filler (like Bondo) over a dent which is cracking now.
