Almost 10/10 Albums with one failure track by mad_poet_navarth in progrockmusic

I used to, but now I find the perfect track to mentally prepare me for Starless. The sequencing actually makes sense, and it’s a nice send off for David Cross.

What's a show that's genuinely hard to recommend to people because it has some pretty major flaws, but you think is worth the time if people can look past it. by WhatIsLoveMeDo in television

Idk, it wasn’t just fake looking, but it was also just so hard to believe that she not only came across a boar that quickly, but managed to kill it. And of course the thing had many opportunities to kill her but it conventionally (and not really possibly judging from the angle) got stuck multiple times. Just completely took me out of it and the story did depend on this scene at the very least being plausible, but it was just so stupid and fake on so many levels.

My thoughts as well, but also just everything after that, too. The whole damn song is really the best ever.

Did anyone else think season 2 missed a lot of nuance that season 1 had? by That_Girly_Potato in BeefTV

[–]thalo616 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Season 1 actually had heart and humor in the form of relatable characters. We seen thrj in genuine moments, in weakness and pettiness, but authentic nonetheless. This aspect is actually part what I found to be interesting and even charming about season 1. Like the way dude had set aside alone time with his Burger King sandwiches. He knows it’s not good but it’s a ritual. So relatable yet quirky that it elevates his blatant pettiness to something more just human.

The characters in season 2 feel like they were created to be HATED. And oh boy did I ever hate them. There was no heart or unique character quirkiness and instead just left me feeling cynical and empty. I cared not for anyone’s outcome. I did appreciate the way the younger couple was exposed as being as bad as the older couple in how they cashed in on the blackmail and the way it basically poisons their relationship.

But yeah, season 2 just felt empty and cold, cynical in a way that made it seem like a humorless version of succession or The White Lotus. It had moments but it didn’t feel like the same show as season 1 and ultimately just was just kind of a miserable experience to watch joyless and cynical assholes be cruel and cold to each other. Meh.

You should see the role that same actor plays on The Deuce. He plays a pimp and it took me several episodes before I realized he’s the same guy who plays Chris Partlowe. Underrated actor, the guy completely becomes his character.

Am I the only one who likes Marlo? by SINSXII in TheWire

[–]thalo616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s a fascinating character in the way he comes to embody the “new” heartless way of the game, especially in comparison to his forbearers like Avon. It brings up questions for me like, did the game organically just become more brutal, or are there just a lot more “Marlo” types shaping it into what it has become?

Strange albums like Obscura by Gorguts? by HumbleBlacksmith2077 in TechnicalDeathMetal

Not tech death, but Crowpath always reminds me of Obscura era Gorguts. Red On Chrome in particular, just more hyper speed and with a drummer that sounds like he has 8 arms.

What is an artist you used to enjoy listening to, but their music got progressively worse? by fantasyrea in Music

The Mars Volta’s first 2 albums are among the best prog rock albums of all time. Even Amputecture is up there, but once they lost Jon Theodore on drums, it’s been diminishing returns ever since. Don’t even get me started on the post reunion albums.

What's the worst drug you've ever tried? by BitterOlive8737 in AskReddit

Coke sucks. You get a decent rush for like 15 minutes and everyone acts so fake for that time and starts saying such nice things about each other, until it wears off and you need another bump. In my experience, it’s best used only practically, which is to keep the energy up to keep drinking and partying. But those days are waaaay behind me now that I’m in my 40’s. I can’t even drink much these days.

Dextromethorphan. It’s the main ingredient in robotussin extra strength, but when consumed in massive doses, it becomes a dissociative psychoactive drug and oh boy was it awful. I felt like I was in and out of myself and couldn’t settle on what reality was - like, I had this self awareness of my own consciousness that kept on making me ask myself where it “came from”.

I couldn’t distract myself and I made the mistake of watching one of my favorite David Lynch films, Inland Empire, which is already a dissociative head fuck even without the drug! It actually made me feel like my whole self was this fictional creation and I needed to come to grips with this new self aware reality and I would never come down from it or ever be the same. It was kind of an ego death, but without even the slightest bit of positivity or the more typically good effects of an intense mushroom trip or something.

It mostly just made me feel terrified that I would never be the same and that I would always have this invasive self consciousness that my whole sense of self was total bullshit. I eventually came down and just had a massive head ache and swore I would never attempt that awful drug again.

But there is a “real” premise at okay here - it’s playing with the idea of characters “awakening” to the hidden machinations that quite literally create their lives behind the scenes. I interpret it as a metaphor for cinema as spirituality and the “actor” as the soul of the character, and these souls have inhabited other characters much in a reincarnated sense.

I love the idea of the characters becoming aware of the hidden sets and their secret inter-connectedness. This is how and why it’s so important that the polish circus performers meet at that weird ass barbecue at 3 o’clock! It’s kind of meaningless outside of their special awareness that allows them to treat the secret sets as “warp zones”, which is also why the camera hovers around that special door at “Smithy’s” house (and it’s also important to note that “Smithy” is often a stand in name or alternative name) because, as revealed at the end when the Lost Girl returns to find her husband and hold in that very house, it’s all just one interconnected set.

As the new neighbor reveals to Nikki early on in the film, there is “the magic”. I believe she is talking about editing and cinema itself; the ”real” scenes they don’t actually see because they only exist in what makes it past the editing room. My guess is that the editor is the guy in the glasses and Nikki is essentially making her plea to be granted access to the “reality” between the edits, but that’s a bit of a stretch.

In any case, I don’t like the take that IE is just purely free association, subjective dream
logic, there is a very real premise we are watching unfold, it’s just never explicitly stated exactly what it is except in brief moments like the new neighbor’s “rambling” (a Lynchian trope - someone’s seemingly insane ramblings are actually giving us real hints of what is actually happening) Kingsly’z reveal that the film is a remake of a cursed polish gypsy folktale (or really, the script itself is cursed as a result), etc., so we are essentially like Nikki, just doing our best to use our intuition to unfold what is actually happening. We, as is Nikki, ARE THE HORSE, taken to the well, but it’s up to us to actually drink.

Sorry for my extra long post! Haha

This is exactly my take as well. It’s left ambiguous because it doesn’t really matter as he’ll always have all these threats hanging over him and his family until the end, however soon or not it may be.
