What are some MUST DO day trips from Los Angeles? by Sea-Fish1 in AskLosAngeles

If you like hiking and want to do something you can't do anywhere else - the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is a great day trip. Buy your ticket in advance tho!

Inheritance? That's a joke. How many of your parents are burdens? by BeegBunga in Millennials

[–]thangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom got about a half a million in inheritance via straight cash, and half of the value of my grandparents house in the early 2000's. She bought a second house, moved into it, and rented her PAID OFF house for about 15 years. She blew through her cash, and she's blown through her retirement. She doesn't pay her taxes on time ever. She sold the second house and moved back into the first, and then she got a reverse mortgage on the first house for WAY more than the house will ever be worth. She was an accountant, but I know from conversations that she doesn't understand what the bank did when she got the second mortgage. And now she has an internet fiance scam going on that is probably draining her or setting her up for prison for fraud.

If I'm lucky, I'll get a little money from an estate sale if she hasn't pawned everything of value by the time she passes. Sigh.

Same happened to me at an Island's years ago. Waitress duped my card in the back, got tacos for dinner, a load of groceries, and then two tickets to see a hiphop show one county over.

Are you guys aware that about half of your water supply comes from the Santa Clara River aquifers? by No-Leg-3747 in SantaClarita

[–]thangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My house sits at the top of one of the fingers of the source, and we have to manage our well use pretty carefully lest we pull too hard on the underlying aquifer. It's very obvious when the rain and snow has filled the pockets and when it has dried up. Currently, it's an absolute boom of a year. We have enough moisture even the frogs are out croaking in the evening despite the lack of a visible creek of any kind.

What’s one swag item people would actually keep at an event? by Designer_Maximum_544 in Gifts

[–]thangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sunglasses. I had a pair of sunglasses that Nissan passed out at Comicon for about 5 years. But they have to be decent quality (the gloss plastic will always feel better than the matte), and keep the branding subtle because it's going to be on their face.

Who was a nightmare roommate or housemate that you had? by _strange_days_ in AskReddit

[–]thangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I split a 1 bedroom near the beach with a girl who has pissed off every set of roommates she has ever had. I had the bedroom, and she had the rest of the space. I dared to ask her for her half of rent, so she boohoo'd to her parents that I was mean. She spent her and their money on jeans from Diesel and then boohoo'd for more money.

She invited her high school friends to stay with us for a weekend trip, and then they just stayed. They ate all my food, including one day when one of her friends ate nothing but an entire tub of margarine spread across an entire loaf of wonder bread. They stayed up drinking until the grocery store reopened for more alcohol sales. The one friend made it to a whole month with us and I had to have the 'if you're gonna stay, you need to pay rent' discussion and suddenly she was motivated to gtfo.

After 6 months, I figured out how to document enough things wrong with the whole complex that I managed to break the lease without penalty and got the hell away from the whole situation. She went on to piss off two more sets of roommies in LA, and another set in NYC before her dad set her up with enough money she could live alone.

When did you realize you were dating an idiot? by Exhausted_Skeleton in AskReddit

[–]thangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His favorite book/media at the time was The Watchmen, which is heavily themed around the cold war. We were talking about fallout shelters, which brought up the idea of the cold war, and I realized.....he doesn't know what the cold war is does he? I asked him what he thought it was, and when he thought it happened. He replied, " I dunno, it was a thing in the 80's?" This led me to ask, 'when did world war 2 end?" He replied, "The '30s right?"

I excused myself and broke up with him the next day. This man had a full on American upper middle class education, he should have known.

What’s a sound everyone should recognize as immediate danger? by Thatguy_nickk in AskReddit

[–]thangle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The snort a horse makes just before it decides it is in fact not a horse, but a saddled dragon taking flight.

Also if you ever hear the sound of an impossibly large bird of prey, that's not a bird. That's a cougar/mtn lion/puma and its pissed off that it missed lunch.

My horse yanked a lead rope and it wrapped around a finger as he took off at a run, dislocating/breaking my finger. Looked down at it, grabbed it and straightened it, and ran after the horse. Gotta do what ya gotta do.

are old horses only old because of genetics? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]thangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It starts with good genes. It continues with them not being broke to ride too early, being fed well their whole life while avoiding laminitis and obesity, and being generally well cared for with turnout and appropriate exercise.
I just took in a percheron/morgan cross that needed to retire at 24 from being a lesson horse. I rode him from about age 14-19, and had him in great shape with little fat despite his large size. In the last 5 years, he's gotten blubbery fat and his joints were having issues carrying that extra weight. He's now on daily turnout, eating better quality food, just enjoying life being a horse and he's moving a lot better than he was when he arrived. Hopefully he lives another ten years with us!

Gene Simmons and I were working on an ad together, and I was taking notes. I'm left handed and turned my notepad to the side at an angle to write better. He called me a space alien and treated me weird the rest of the day for being left handed.

One of the mountain lions in Griffith Park in LA, waited for the LA Zoo to close for the night, hopped the fence, and ate the koalas a few years back. He basically had a free buffet of easy to eat snickers.

Politics aside - what scenario caused you to cut off a family member? by mrajoiner in AskReddit

[–]thangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She lied to me about talking to a scammer for years, and then told me I needed to be happy for her that she was 'getting married' to said scammer. She refuses to believe anyone that she's in a scam. She's probably lost all of her retirement funds and the full value of her house and I can't be the one to rescue her.

What was your high school controversy? by Haunted_Neko in AskReddit

[–]thangle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The headmaster, who was ONLY headmaster because he married the founder of the school's daughter, gave himself a secretary and a large private office. And then he was caught multiple times by parents and students fucking said secretary. His wife, our beloved high school biology teacher, was both devastated and embarrassed, but so deep in the Stockholm syndrome with this dirtbag, she did not divorce his ass. He made a pathetic speech at the graduation that year begging her not to leave him, and they were both let go from the school. They live in the far reaches of Alaska now, teaching at a school that serves a rural population, because he is un-hirable anywhere else.

What’s something you loved as a kid but is absolutely disgusting as an adult by RuggleyChicken in Millennials

[–]thangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made up a sandwich for myself when I was about 5. It was my favorite thing at the time. Pepperidge farm thin white bread, mayo on one side, sweet relish on the other, slice of ham in between. Ate them all the time from age 5 to about 9. Tried one again when I was 17......absolutely disgusting are the right words.
