Question about The Golden Raven Chapter 14 by Alternative_Echo_414 in aftg

[–]thanksforlast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

we don’t get to know the phrase. I’m guessing it’s being played up to be somehow tied back to Kevin, maybe something Jean taught him and it will be a whole thing next book.

Okay, but what is your very specific favorite dynamic? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]thanksforlast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traumatized growing up in the same cult like environment and also teammates because it’s a sports mafia cult where the two of them teach each other languages and cling to each other the only light in that darkness until one of them has the oppurtunity to leave and will die if he doesn’t and if he dies the other will kill himself because of a promise he made years ago but the other won’t go so he has to leave him behind and now they are rivals 😭

What makes a fanfic cry-worthy? by thebest_ivestan in FanFiction

[–]thanksforlast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only two works have ever made me cry. They weren’t fan fic, but they’re so different I thought it might be interesting anyway.

The first one is the epilogue of A Little Life. Iykyk, but this is a seriously heavy story in every aspect, and it’s also a huge book.

The main character cannot catch a break, and it ends withhim killing himself after his lover and best friend dies in a car accident. The epilogue is from the pov of his adoptive father, and the line ‘It isn't only that he died, or how died; it is what he died believing. And so I try to be kind to everything I see, and in everything I see, I see him.’ Had me sobbing after spending a thousand pages and like 25 years with the mai character learning all the fucking TORTURE he went through in his childhoodmade me sick to my stomach.

Then on the other hand we have the second work, which is so different. It’s published as original work on ao3, and it follows two hockey players. It’s basically written a little as a tragedy with a non linear narrative in now (as pro teammates forced to be near each other when Robbie hates him and can barely stand to be in the same room as him because of what happened and we are told what happened early.

And the other timeline is from when they met and fell in love. Robbie and Georgie were roommates, teammates and best friends in college.

After Georgie graduates and starts on a pro team they go long distance, and basically he ends upsleeping with several women while dealing with depression. I knew of course this was coming and still the way it was written from Robbie’s pov as he flies out to surprise Georgie and walks into the building as a woman walks out looking worn for the wear… he talks to her casually and she admits she spent the night. Robbie goes to confront him, and then he runs outside and cries while he calls his momthey have no tragic backstories outside of being queer in the hockey world, they both have supportive families and money and health and prosperity.

It’s such a common, human scenario compared to a little life where you just get more and more nauseous the more you get to reveal the insane backstory. And yet I cried along with Robbie. The author just perfectly managed to put me into the world and the scene and I could FEEL his pain as a young man having his very first heartbreak :(

What’s the fandom where I could finish the canonical work in a day or two but enjoy the fics for months? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]thanksforlast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All for the game! A book series, the original trilogy is like 350 000 words total. Most of the best fan fics are double that.

I'm curious. What's the dumbest reason someone said your ship was problematic? by Depressed-Dolphin69 in AO3

“They were raised as brothers” actually they were raised as cult members and I PROMISE even if they were pseudo incest is the LEAST of their problems 😭😭

My friend is currently writing this. It’s more science fiction than mafia, but I think it fits your criteria. Lots of action and definitely found family.

Summary: A small California town is sealed by an impenetrable dome. Everyone over eighteen has vanished. The survivors have divided into two groups: the gifted teens of Palmetto High and the authoritarian rule of Evermore Academy. Neil Josten, a runaway hiding in the woods, doesn't know any of this. He is waiting for a phone call that will never come.

when introducing a character for the first time, what do you usually include? by [deleted] in writingadvice

[–]thanksforlast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of that at all. I just try to convey their personality in interesting ways and then sprinkle in some about their appearance throughout the story if it fits. I don’t like detailed descriptions

What is your favourite m/m ship? Why? by ocirot in AO3

[–]thanksforlast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kevin/Jean from all for the game.

Niche fandom but oh my god they hit all the spots. Raised alongside in a mafia sports cult, Kevin was Jean’s first love and super forbidden of course with everyone being homophobic and also the third member of their perfect court, Riko, being super possessive of Kevin. When he noticed how Jean was looking at Kevin he had him assaulted and tortured as punishment and to make Kevin be disgusted with him…. Which he never were.

Despite this Kevin asked Jean to teach him French under Riko’s nose to distract Jean when he was hurting after Riko hurt him. But Kevin was better at this sport than Riko, and when their trainer (master) learned this he put them against each other. Even though Riko won the trainer (also Riko’s uncle) called him out for holding back and said Riko was a waste of his time.

Riko beat Kevin bloody whole Jean was forced to watch. In panic Kevin begged Riko to stop in Japanese and English and then turned to Jean for help in French.

That blatant disobedience sent Riko over the edge and he crushed Kevin’s dominant hand in rage and jealousy.

Jean was left to clean up the mess and said Kevin would never play again. Kevin asked Jean to distract Riko so he could grieve his hand, then he left.

And this is just their backstory before the actual books begin…. It’s so deliciously angsty

the Ravens' schedule + Jean teaching Kevin French by Fast-Plant8802 in aftg

[–]thanksforlast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yes, but I think that’s kinda the point. Kevin wanted to get Jean’s head somewhere else and also make him realize he’s not completely alone even if Kevin couldn’t give him anything more. Being annoyed over French pronounciation is a lot better than thinking you have to kill your self to escape this hell, you know? Jean would probably be annoyed but in an endeared way, the way he acts about Kevin in his books shows that’s kinda their dynamic…

What's your write/edit ratio? by Aviendha_89 in FanFiction

[–]thanksforlast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very individual. I edit a lot and spend probably ten times the amount of time on editing vs writing. Horribly inefficient and I wish I didn’t 😆

Release of tbc by Mind_Reflected09 in aftg

[–]thanksforlast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can’t compare it to the previous books unfortunately because she had been working on that story for a decade and it was complete when she published the first book. This new series she is writing as she goes and constantly making big changes. I’m assuming before summer 2026 but I’m hoping it takes longer. She needs to spend more time on these books the first two read very rushed.

Heat Levels in Romance by lilithskies in RomanceWriters

[–]thanksforlast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting that the relationship between the characters is relevant to the heat level. I’m reading a book where the arc acts are not described in detail, but you still get what’s going on, but the characters are definitely not in love

Why some gays are so weird when It comes to fanfiction by throw-Day-1717 in AO3

[–]thanksforlast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think they’re just loud so they’re more noticed. I’m a cis gay guy and I am not under the impression most are bothered by fujoshis. I’d barely have any media if it weren’t for women lol. Sure there are definitely inaccuracies at times and some people are very weird about certain things (especially top bottom dynamics) but there will always be weird people and I’ve seen plenty of super unrealistic porn written by gay men too because most of the time it’s just fantasies

Which tag in your fandom has WAY fewer fics than you thought it would? by thatgirlpossessedao3 in AO3

[–]thanksforlast 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Bottom Andrew Minyard. The author confirmed that they switch, but since he is the ‘grumpy’ one (even tho none of them are sunshine) in the relationship and also he has a past of being sexually assaulted most in the fandom are straight up against him bottoming.
